Waaah waaah waah there's always an excuse with you lot isn't there? How about instead of whinging about how the government isn't doing anythng for you, you go and check out some proper events (not all events are held at dedicated race tracks either).

PLenty of holes in your arguments - won't get into a big pi$$ing match on the internet. If you want to discuss with me, PM and arrange to meet me at one of the motorsports events to show you're serious about this and not just a whinger who expects everything handed to them on a silver platter, hell I might even let you enter my car and have a go. I'm up for converting street racers to proper motorsport.

im not whinging... im just saying the guys that street race are going to do it no matter what (im not one of them).. like you say there are plenty of motorsports events on.. i dont expect anything handed to me.. i work, get paid, and pay my bills, unfortunatly there is not enough left over, so i work overtime and another job to have some spending money for myself... maybe in a few years when the mrs is out of uni and can pay her share of the home loan then i can start really getting involved in proper events.. but for me that requires a trailer and a tow car.. 2 extra rego's, 2 lots of running costs etc. its expensive to do it right.. and i cant afford it.

exactly..

as with grease, happy days, etc though.. they didnt show it as being stupid on a suburban street.. they still had a place, they arranged a meet time..

The suburban middle classes have always feared groups of young men...especially when they have motor vehicles.

Seen The Wild One with Marlon Brando? You had motorcycle gangs and street racing in the late 40's and the American small town middle class were petrified of them to the point of near hysteria. The bikers were not out to pillage or rape, just wanted to 'be cool' and let of a bit of steam with bikes...they were misunderstood.

haha yeah all the bikie gangs say that....

tbqh I much prefer watching street racing than anything on the local drag strip.

So much for "tough" policing, last friday night here seemed to be "skids 4 kids" night on the Calder Highway LOL.

got ya flame suit ready?

hey it's true, sorry to the guys who actually like drag racing, but it's boring as f**k after about 20 minutes.

Nothing compares to watching two LS1's gunning it through the roundabout at 60 in second then letting all hell let loose and reach speeds of 150km/h + down a suburban street

You know I expect there to be holes in my argument...that's where you come into play and hopefully challenge them for me. Because even though I constantly argue with my own feelings on any given topic to reach a better conclusion, I'm just one man and one mind. Two minds in disagreeance will surely reach a better solution than one or two who agree on a solution. So there's no need for a pissing match here, or to call it so before it has even begun. Most everyone in this thread has been really mature and civil about the topic and I daresay we've made more progress with regards to it than any hoon raids our state governments would like to set up. Hell, I find myself on level ground with alr33x, something of a rare occurrence (and almost worthy of a signature quote I might add).

Mate I appreciate the kind offer to show me the rungs, but I've been and done it - do save it for someone worth converting though, e.g. a real street racer. You're preaching to the choir because I'm not the people this topic is addressing. Just because I want to solve our problems and their problems doesn't mean I'm alligned with them nor do I feel that what they do is right. Every Victorian section regular will tell you how valiantly I challenge this kind of behaviour all the time to the point of pissing people off.

As NZM says, doing the right thing isn't easy. It's expensive, inconvenient and sometimes not worth it - even if you snag a podium finish on the weekend. In fact, the true reality of motorsport is that only those who are handed everything on a silver platter have the means to participate regularly in motorsport - this is a far cry from your average street racer and his Commodore/Skyline/Falcon/Whatever. There's no fun in replacing 3 x SR20 short blocks after a single weekend, I'll tell you that much. Now the biggest problem with motorsport and converting street racers to it - how do you plan on addressing the issue of some guy who just installed an exhaust system on his car and wants to see how he will go now against his mate's car? Being young and impulsive will they wait for next friday night so they can drive 2 hours to the dragstrip and risk breaking their cars 2 hours from home? Or will they find the nearest set of traffic lights on a secluded road?

yeh my old boy held the fastest time for singleton to windsor via the putty in his escort. the routine for getting pulled over went like this. according to him,

bit of a chase.. pull over when your ready.

cop checks your car and your licence and where your from.

cop plants gas pedal of your car and holds it wide open for a few minutes while you watch.

if it blows up.. cop bids you good night and goes on his way, leaving you there.

if it doesnt blow up, cop bids you good night, and goes on his way.

dad even knows of atleast three GTHO's that are possibly still at the bottom of cliffs after being totalled on the putty road.. i find that interesting.. if they crashed, they would just walk away (if they could walk away) and leave it.

in the world of today tonight and a current affair feeding people garbage and telling them what to do and what not to do, everything gets taken way too far.

40 years ago.. if you slipped on a wet patch or stumbled on a gutter, you'd shake it off and tell yourself to watch where your going.. now you'd sue them for as much as you can get.

i find it hard to fathom... that the politicians in power at the moment, who are around the age of my father, seem to have forgotten how they were brought up and the things that they did when they were kids..

i mean, they are the ones making the rules.. and they can see whats different now, to how it was then.. when smacking was not child abuse, but an act of discipline.. you never talked back to your elders, and police and headmasters were feared and respected.

at the end of the day, parents are to blame really. like they say.. the most that you can spend on any child is time.

Mate I appreciate the kind offer to show me the rungs, but I've been and done it -

for someone who's been there and done it all, you really have a strange idea about the average club level motorsport competitor and how costly it is.

Woah slow down, I didn't say I've done it all - that would be a bit arrogant. But I've done as much as I want to for now and that's more than most of the street racers plaguing our public roads. Even at a club level, motorsport isn't cheap - IMO anyone who thinks so is really kidding themselves, doing a Sunday drive on the circuit, hitting up motorkhanas in a shitheap, or a newbie. By all means challenge my perception but perhaps do it with some grounds instead of just telling me I have no idea what I'm talking about. Now compare yourself to your average street racer and tell me if you both have the same ideas about motorsport costs and convenience.

Ask any real racer...

QUOTE (NZM.031 @ 10 Mar 2010, 01:18 AM)

victoria is a small state.. with several tracks.. and a boat ride over to tassie..

cheers

Linton

what is this supposed to mean?

He thinks that thier is enough tracks in melb that we use and thats it's cheep to get to tassie.

WRONG.

When i was last in melb (08) i managed to attend 1 track event that cost me no less then $300 for the day.

the other problem is the amount of avalerbility of tracks.

i.e calder park drag strip is open most friday nights for about $50 (last time i was thier) but by 7-8pm its pointless to race as it takes about 30min to line up for your next go due the no of cars. however i only ever raced on calderpark grand prix circute once.

sandown got used twice and even had twilight races (thanks to kevwrx) but this got shut down becuase the reserdents didn't like the noise of cars (it ran till about 9pm on a fri sat night)

winton i used a few times but took me 2 hours to gether and back so this gratly incressed the use of fuel plus cost.

and thats all that was ever on offer to me (could have dont phillip island but this agan is far away and was not on offer much)

so what im i saying. You need to have track meets on regula ocations and open as many tracks as posible. thier is no way i wona drive 3 hours to the track and back.

Up here in darwin the north australian motor sport comittie has at least a track event once a months and motakana every 3rd or so week.

plus drags are on every friday and it costs about $45 for each event.

dooley's on nova now? that's odd u mention. because you said you'd gimme a call when you got home and you didn't. fuckface.

also

i was in the car with my gf the other day... nova was playing some whiney douchebag art student folk music shit. and i said to my woman. i says "nova's trying real hard to be like tripleJ these days" she goes "no they're not" i turn to tripleJ and they're playing the exact same gay song as nova.

while i'm here - let's all take a step back and watch this.

I think there is a huge untapped potential for a private investor/company to build up a private stretch of track/road about 30 mins to an hour outside of all the major capital cities. The sort of place that is open every day (or weekend depending on popularity)

The Start and finish would be nearby but not attached. You would travel to the venue, go in the gate and pay your money. Get your car scrutinized for safety features. The track would be roughly a 10 minute flat out trip with safe run of areas and flag people in particular areas to advise of trouble ahead.

You would start your lap and come out the other side and determine whether you want to pay for another lap or go home.

Cars would run apart 2 minutes. So it would operate much like a tarmac rally stage. Also the potential for booking the venue for the day for clubs / work functions etc.

Seen as we would be talking serious investment their is also potential for on site hotel much like a Golf Course Resort.

People could purchase memberships for the track just like a Golf Course to allow access. (probably quite expensive but awesome). Also potential for hiring out budget track cars for a price as well as private lessons.

Would be an expensive venue to setup. However I believe it would be economically viable in the long run pending insurance costs as well as the massive arguements with councils and greeny groups to get it set up.

To the Government and large Businesses. If this issue is as serious as you all keep telling us in the news, then drastic times need drastic measures and a top level race facility that is always running and caters for 95% of enthusiasts has to help. At the very least it will assist in the business or government having another source of revenue as well as assisting giving more excuses to take it off our streets. Also meaning that you can increase penalties to those whom as complete hazards whilst being more leniant to those that behave.

Its all a dream really. Sadly I doubt it will ever happen and I wouldn't even be able to afford to setup the front gate of this, let alone fund the whole thing

It's a nice concept but I think you've overcomplicated the nature of the venue. It doesn't need to be all that complex, no more so than the empty roads of the industrial areas where street racers frequent - all you need is the bitumen. The only part that needs to be complex and well thought out is the safety side of things. If you put too much into the setup of the venue itself and its facilities then running costs and therefore participation fees increase. Add to the equation the ability to book out the track and we move away from 24/7 hoon solution into a full blown racetrack.

dooley's on nova now? that's odd u mention. because you said you'd gimme a call when you got home and you didn't. fuckface.

My apologies for not calling you...... I'm just hella too busy with my indie band.

But yeah, any money the song you're talking about is angus and julia stone. They're shit. But not as much as you.

Oh yeah.... Racetracks are viewed as deathtraps by the powers that be I'm sure, the public liability would be a nightmare.

Unfortunately i think we're always going to be short on venues for racing. People improvising their own racecourses, while it may be stupid/fun/gay will always happen in response to a lack of proper venues.

Why the hell else would this drift and touge crap be so cool?

    • Yep, that was one of the things we learned fast in the past with our MX5. When you drive with the top down, you are effectively standing out in the sun, 100% of the time, and not getting in any shade (because roads aren't shaded generally!). Just like standing out in the middle of a field on a sunny 27C day is a bit of a bad plan, so is sitting in a MX5 without sun protection.
    • I also just ordered some Frankenstein bolts and side mounts to fit a hard top Just in case I do find one, basically so it doesn't need to be fixed to the car with only the front latch.......and then gaffa tape to keep it in place for the RTN journey from wherever I get it
    • If your temps are fine now, you probably won't have any issues with where your vents are as they don't look right up at the windscreens high pressure area, so any differences when giving it the beans for extended happy laps would be minimal, but, they should vent heaps when stuck in traffic  Much like how that reverse cowl on my SS let "visible" heat out when stationary, but, because it was basically at the windscreen my coolant temps on the Hwy actually raised because air was being fed into it at speed (110kph), to only come back down to around 90° when I got off the Hwy And your 100% correct about the NC currently not needing vents, but, if I was to add a turbo, and a oil cooler and intercooler in front of the condenserand radiator, and then take it to the track???? It is apparently a recommend requirement if I don't want to worry about coolant or oil temp issues, but, any of the above are possible scenarios, over time As it sits now, with the triple pass radiator and stock air conditioning system, I have absolutely no issues with either temps or air conditioning efficiency, I've been basically daily driving thie car for the last month, both on the Hwy, and peak hour, bumper to bumper traffic, but, that's pretty much expected from basically a standard engine  Talking about no issues daily driving, it was 39° the other day and I was sitting in bumper to bumper traffic on the M5 and then M7, with the top down, and with the air conditioning blowing nice cold air on my feet, balls, and face, well, there was one issue, my head and arms got pretty sun burnt Note to self: leave a hat and sunscreen in the car for such days 🤣
    • I would agree, unless you need something specific to the HV motor/battery side repaired or investigated, any mechanic will be able to perform normal services, but if you prefer, maybe look for a mechanic who regularly services/repairs Nissans, the VQ engines are pretty common in the Nissan lineup.  Sorry, I can't make any suggestions, I don't live in Vic.
    • Some of them keep working fine. 9 out of 10 of them end up causing an absolute misery bleeding the system and get thrown on the workshop floor in a tantrum and never thought about again because they were never really needed and just added crap to the car that we could have done without. Same-same with HICAS, A-LSD, and various other stupidities that over eager 10x engineers thought we had to have.
