Hey all

I've got an osgiken r3c triple plate in my gtr.

Very happy with it's general feel, although I'll be going back to a NISMO twin once this triple is worn out.

So, my question; I know solid centres aren't gearbox friendly, but on a hard launch (eg at a drag meet at WSID), just how unfriendly are these clutches?

I'd like to take the car to WSID once the tune is finished. I'm more of a corners/hills sort of guy instead of drag but I'd like to do it once after the tune so I can say I gave it a go. It's got 400rwkw with lots more boost and ignition to come, so it's all expected to finish around 420awkw. I'm thinking it should do a 10???

Thanks!

You will need to hold the handbrake and load the drivetrain with the clutch to avoid the harsh impact of the launch using the R3C (or any other Jap triple). However, with a stock box, I hope it lasts. I broke 3 boxes with a HKS triple due to its harshness on the driveline. I found that I had to ease it into third to avoid breaking the box.

And yes, 420awkw should get you a 10...driver and gearbox dependant. :)

Oh, also it's a stock box in very good order....which I don't want to have to replace after a drag meet

When I bought my GTR, the g-box was replaced in J land (on warranty from the auction yard) with a new box. 3 race meets later 3rd gear went bang. I had a brand new R3C installed as soon as the car hit aus. I was racing around 400rwkw and was into the low 11's before the box went.

I was aware of the 3rd gear weakness, so I was taking it super easy.

GL... your box will need it.

Yeah the 3rd gear is very unfriendly with big power/torque...mine broke accelerating out of turn 9 at the creek...not on shift. So even if you shift it like a baby it may shatter rolling back on the power after its shifted. Mine was even cryo treated...GTR dogboxes can be hired for around $500 a meet from Red R Racing i believe. :(

it's so hard to say if it will break or not. I ran my old grey gtr for a couple of years with 280rwkw and a OS tripple in it. did plenty of savage "dial up 7,000rpm and just drop the clutch" type launches and didn't have any box problems at all. but of course you have a fair bit more power. personally I say go for it. not much fun having a car you can't do what you want in it. if it breaks then fix it. :)

Now thats an awsome Idea... ha ha ha. Especially when you charge 500 for instalation and 500 for removal. Whats with the new screen name Paul?

... then repeat.

Drag racing or not, with well over 400kw at the treads it's likey to go pop. Even if it dosn't, it's no fun having to worry about "when or if" it goes. like beer baron said... it's not fun if you cant use it.

I'd start saving for a new box, or turn it down to help it live.

Ok thanks everyone for the replies

I've decided to go for just one off street drag session (the weeknight ones), and just see how it does

I'm not going to launch, just hold revs around 2000rpm with the clutch starting to grab and the handbrake up, then let go of the handbrake and stand on the loud pedal through each gears. No flat changing either, I know that's not optimal for time but the trap speed *should* be respectable

Although the stock input shaft are known to break after a while on a big hp car, I don't think you'll have to many problems with a higher rpm launch. 1st and 2nd are quite strong... hell Last weekend I watched a 650bhp GTR limmiter launch 5 or 6 times and bang through 1st and 2nd... very easy on third and ripped through the rest. Eventually 3rd broke.

Changing gears like granny wont substitute insufficient metalurgy. It's just easy on the cyncro's...

If you drive a 430rwkw GTR with a stock box and an R3C, expect 3rd to go... simple as that.

I say drive the thing properly and ease the clutch/power in at 3rd gear. Cross you fingers and hope your lucky.

im kinda in the same boat. 400kw atm but will be around 430-440 next tune but with a Nismo super coppermix twin Competition clutch (rated to 740ps) would this be less harsh on the gearbox?

could not agree more. 100% spot on. big launches wont be the problem. if it's got real big power it will eventually just peel the teeth of 3rd. no matter how you launch or how you shift. I mean you are still going to use full throttle in 3rd right?

in the big power cars it's hardly the launches that kill boxes. it's just the power. at launch all you get is a bit of wheel spin and off you go. launch it.

+1 on the above.

The lack of a sprung clutch will mean more savage gear changes and 3rd gear is known o be the weak link in the 5-speed GTR boxes. My cousin used to thrash the guts out of his R32, limiter launches and burnouts etc. It was only when he fitted a solid centre triple plate that the box decided to go the first time he hit it in 3rd.

Put simply, solid triples+stock box = boom

If you're too worried about breaking the box, Steve, I am more than happy to race it for you and if the box breaks, I will replace it with one of my spares

Hahaha Charlie thanks for the offer! I've got a spare box here, maybe you can put your 6spd in and take it for a run hahaha

it should be finished tuning today

yes I'll use full throttle in every gear, so far the box has done very well from when the car had the single on it (power delivery was pretty savage)

it's got a profec b spec 2, I'll call the tuner now and see what can be done

at the end of the day it's not made for drags, it's made for hills, but yeah a nice time would be a bonus

Are you saying that you want to buy my six speed?

Oh, and I call BS, Steve. You WANT a quick time, otherwise you wouldn't waste your time running the car at the drags :)

When are you going? A couple of fairly quick GTR's will be there tonight.

Im about to go get the car from the tuners (got to run out the door now)

Wont run it tonight, but i might go for a look. Who's going to be there?

Oh and yeah, i do want a quick time - who wants slow times?! lol

No i dont want to buy the 6spd, just use it hahaha

Ive got ORC Twin soild centre in my gtr, its lasted heaps of limiter dumps on the street and smashing it into 3rd, i mite stop doin that now ive read this thread lol, im only making 312awkw not 400+ like stevo's monster i seen this thing at unigroup dyno day...... 400kw @6k rpm : D ANIMAL

Ok, ive given it a bit of a hard time tonight, lots of second and third gear. All seems fine. I might run it in the next 3 weeks.

Power is now 455kw. Anyone know what sort of time that should equate to?
