As above, where do Skylines get the speed signal for the ECU from?

Cant be gearbox (not on 32s anyway) as 32s have a speedo cable & yet the ECU still gets a signal...

I have a digital speed readout on my turbo timer (which is mounted just above cluster) & it's not working.

Recently installed an RB25DET & had the original ECU from that installed, didn't work.

Now have a Haltech, doesn't work.

Car has been off the road that long I can't remember if it stopped working while the RB20 was in or just since I've swapped engine & box.

99% sure it had stopped working even with the 20.

Problem is I fitted the R33 box with the engine & haven't sorted the cable yet so have no speedo at all.

Would be nice to have some idea how fast I'm going!

Also caused a few problems with ECU where things want to be speed activated, such as VCT, etc (can get around it but still...)

Would be really handy if someone could help me out so I can fix everything.

Cheers,

Brett

Ok trying to remember off the top of my head it goes like this:

R33 - electronic speed signal from gearbox to dash - then electronic singal goes to ECU - then electronic signal goes to HICAS ECU

R32 - cable speed signal from gearbox to dash - then electronic signal goes to ECU - then electronic signal goes to HICAS ECU

So really they are the same other than the initial signal from the gearbox itself.

So you're saying that if cluster doesn.t work, neither will digital speedo?

Was pretty sure at least one of the times I stripped the gear off the speedo cable (cluster end) the dash speedo didn't work but the digital speedo did... Could be wrong but. If you're right I definitely am.

my mate put a 25 into his ceffy and had issues with the speedo. he wired the wires straight to the ecu and then the first time he went for a drive he was hitting the speed cut in ist gear. seemed to be that when it is wired through the dash it drops the voltage, so without it the ecu thought he was going much faster than he was. i think he ended up just cutting the wires to the ecu. he was using a rev speed meter for the speedo.

    • Thanks mate 👍 The car was brought into the UK by a USAF mechanic until he was stationed back to the US, one owner later I bought her back in 2009. Luckily the only corrosion was on the sill seams, so once taken back to metal and treated and sealed all ok, I then undersealed the car myself and check yearly and treat any corrosion which to be honest is zero. She's garaged most of the time and hardly ever driven in the rain, but as you say most are rotten unfortunately, I was lucky in finding her as she was and still is in excellent condition.
    • Stunning car.  Looks amazing!  You're in the UK?  How the hell do you stop your car rotting away beneath you?  British cars are the WORST I've ever seen in regards to rust.  Some of the cars SR Autobody have done are borderbeyond saving.
    • not a date code? or a foundry code?
    • I have up to date pics of the engine build and turbo conversion over on my instagram @skpro_jects if you want to take a deeper look.   Basically the exhaust manifold is straight bolt on and the ports match (they arent any smaller than a 25 or 26 head).    the intake ports are different shape so the 20/25det manifold will bolt up but wont match properly or seal. You will need to port match using the 25det gasket as a stencil. Personally i ran the entire stock 20neo intake setup and have configured the swirl valves and torque valve to work based on my custom parameters to help with off boost response and spool. But this is using a standalone aem v2 ecu. The stock 20det ecu wont be able to control them.
    • Hi. a little later but if the topic is here. So...the exhaust is the same and you can use 25/Turbo or any aftermarket? What about intake side? Is it too "plug n play" or? (i do not remember for 100% but i think that one intake to head gasket was little bit different than on the RB25 - i bought gasket kit way back) I know that even if it "plug" those butterfly swirls would cause ECU to be confused or?   Just asking for the info 🙂 and of course the RB25 things are easier to come by
