hey guys just looking at a few cams for the RB20... iv seen Tomei mostly and they are around the $1000 mark but CAMTECH CAMS make them for a bit cheaper.

Wondering what you guys think on putting a bigger cam on a lightly modifed motor?? Will i see many gains??? Im not to good on cams lol

Any help will be appreciated

Not on a mild rb20.

Power gains? Nope.

All you will do is shift the power band, and that is only going upwards most likely... so not doing a street RB20 any favours unfortunately :)

Pretty sure Troy tried some Tomei cams - He went back to factory cams if memory serves me correct

Check the RB20/260rwkw thread, it should have the details in there either way in far more detail

unless you want to push 300hp+ i would be upgrading other area's of external bolt on's and having spent a fortune on a RB20 i would

advise anyone, the money is better spent on a 25 conversion or 25/26/30 combo. The money it cost me to get over 400rwhp

could of got me over 500rwhp in a RB25 and a more usable power band, but in saying that i still like the little 20.

Cams on std engines with little turbos with small A/R hotsides dont seem to like cams. Now a built RB20 with a big 0.86 A/R 500hp turbo....cams may help....nobody can reliably tell me which is making me nervous about building up an RB20, nobody can give you a tried and proven recipe

roy i got 321hp = 240 rwkw outta rb20 with 264 in / ex cams and hks 2530 0.63 at 19 /20 psi

would you not agree most rb20 with just straight 2530 + 20 psi = 230 rwkw? if so then approx 10 rwkw gain ?? ( I know very very simple comparison and every dyno is diff etc)

Not saying this is what id do on a mild engine as bang for ur buck is not really there

same cams i think make big diff with the rb22 on 2835 use more of the rev range where the rb20's love to be

Things is i made 260rwkws with std cams, installed 260/8.8mm cams and lost response and 10rwkws, even with tweaking the cam gears and tune for about 75 dyno pulls. Could not get it back, too much bak pressure from the tiny 8cm housing i run

260-280rwkw 1.2-1.4bar standard rb20 here. The 280 was with a boost leak too :bunny:

same turbo as Roy's but different plenum.

I'm thinking about giving Status' cams a go when I have the time. But I wouldn't think you need cams till about this power level.

Correct me if im wrong but any mild or more serious cams on an rb20 is only going to shift the curve and fatten it up while it is there. But it wont do a whole lot for low down.

didnt you make that power with 2530 on ALLSTAR hubber, its known to read 5-7% higher which would be around 20hp... Which would mean around 300rwhp on roller which is pretty much dead on normal

yeop yeop ... cool was just trying to give some comparison coz no one seems to run cams in their 20's

as said im in agreeance, doing it again i wouldnt bother, spend the extra $$ on other performance mods

Yeh i know two people in Melb with 2530s and Poncams and they dont feel that different to an RB20 with a 2530. Sound better but thats about it

I cant remember the settings other then retard the hell out of the exchaust cam (from memory about 4 deg)

What about Poncams with cam gears? Is it possible to get, to a degree, stock like response with the benefits of aftermarket cams?

What benefit? The two 2503 powered RB20s with Poncams drive like a RB20 with std cams. There isnt a tangible improvement in my eyes. Could be wrong though. They both make power where you expect, they both make about 220odd rwkws. They both have boost drop off at high revs. I think it comes down to the fact that eveb though the engine is happy enough to breath with std or aftermarket cams, with the lil 2530 and other 320-350hp turbos they simply have too mcuh back pressure in the exhaust housings and choke the engine up.

I had a friend with an R33 with Greddy plenum, HKS cams and a 2530. It made 230rwkws and came on like there was no tomorrow. but i dont think the cams did anything for it either until he got the 3040, T66 and other setups on it

yeah im fairly sure it's just +2 inlet -4 exhaust, just need someone to confirm

to be honest even with a gt2530 cam gears are a waste, the inlet does near nothing and the exhaust frees up a bit with a bit of retard but again minimal. The rear housing is the restrictrion not the head (cams etc)

Thats why i am going back to the 10cm housing, Plazmaman plenum...will see if cams work for it then. Need to beat that R31 fella making more power then me :)

Come on Trent, give me the specs of something you have seen work. :) I am torn between installing my solid lifters with some 260/10.25mm cams to go with the 10cm housing and 2.4L bottom end or just keep my money in my pocket and keep reving the crap out of the lil std motor and see how it goes. I am so hot and cold about all this :( Its safer to go with a known RB26 or RB30 setup, but.... :)

As if im going to use a pissy little 2530 :)

I've got a ATR28G3 with 0.63 rear... Same turbo as you tuned for Stao a while ago and made 500nm of torque, so my question still stands :)

    • My 6 Point FIA harness have arrived (kinda). There was a mix up from the supplier and I ended up with 3" set rather than the 2" set. I contacted them and their customer service was top notch. It is being resolved and 2" ones will be on their way to be soon but in the mean time I was able to at least mock them up in the car to see the vibes. Need to organise some fixed back seats so i can actually use them as a 6 point. I am leaning towards the Velo Podium II XLs as I like the look of the bolstering compared to the GP90 XL or GPT2. The side and thigh bolstering on the GP90/GPT feels less that my existing Bride Digo R recliner. Velo Podium II XL Velo GP90 XL Velo GPT2
    • Yea I know the wiring would be fine just want to use I got. This was my first built engine and it blowing got me beat down just want to have it running right again but hopefully I can find a non vct head so I don’t have to do any of this lol.
    • Recently did the Perth Festival of Speed - and basically what we thought might be an average event turned out to be absolutely awesome they bought Mad Mike and Xtreme over and was good to see Perth get, support and produce something so good - 24,000 people in two days      It was nice to have it close to home for once yet have my whole crew there to run the car properly     Xtreme got the tin top laps record with 51.57    I hadnt done a hot lap on the home track for 20 months and finally everything clicked and dropped 4 secs off PB and did a 53.29 which is 3rd fastest tin top ever around that track. only 1.3 tenths behind 2nd so should eat that up soon... can I get Xtremes time - its not out of the question   Alll the blaa blaa's in the world but if I can replicate even close to that situation on other tracks will be able to make an impact     We got asked to do the hill climb to put on a show which in reality is just using some chicanes and the short track at barbs but good fun... launch control was put in and won the Pro class in that also.     Car needs some attention after being on it around Australia for last few months moreso the carbon underbody work and just a run through and clean up everything else seems to have held up good enough. Would like ,to take some weight out but that requires alot of effort 😁   Also waiting on new rules for WTAC and have some decisions to be made there and prob some minor modifications to suit pending class changes. Will see...   Divided on whether to go hard for one more year or chill out re: events this coming year prob more on the go hard and see if I can get improvements in times. If I didnt have so travel so far it would be less of an issue but I do so hmmm...   Also because build thread - gone to flappy paddles and a gearing change with a drop gear. It was becoming apparent that there were situations where I really needed to be hanging onto the wheel with both hands yet had to change gears and was getting a little sketchy and / or I just didnt change gears and delt with it and also 5th gear at 10,000 rpm is 290 kmph so I havent been using 6th as did 282 at WTAC and 274 in Perth drop gear will change to 6th being 300 at 10,000 rpm should also get a touch more acceleration speed
    • No, not really. Except that there are newer, better cam options that don't date back to the 90s. I was under the impression that you couldn't use VCT with them, which is why I said to get rid of them. If you can't/won't use VCT because of what you listed above, that's another matter. Although I would have said the wiring aspect of it was something that you should just suck up and do, as it isn't hard. Getting an actuator for the cam gear will possibly be expensive. I still say VCT is for the win. There's a reason HKS makes money selling it for 26s.
    • Is there something wrong with using tomei?  I’ve heard the tomei usa are fake parts. Reason why I don’t want to make vct work is one gotta make a plug for the solenoid get the vct cam gear. I rather just use the stuff I already have. I made 450 on 17psi full boost at 4K. I’m satisfied with that it’s a street car and sometimes hit the track for drift. If I’m really wanting to decrease the lag I’ll go to a smaller rear housing as I have an extra or even cam gears.
