I've got I've got some 225/45 R18 Bridgestone Potenza RE040 on my AXIS wheels at the moment.

They are getting a bit worn, so I'm after some recommendations.

From reading some old threads it seems that I can either go for more 225/45 R18 tyres, or swap to 235/40 R18 which may give me more options.

I'm looking for something that's good in the wet, and ideally sub $300 a corner.

I've got no brand loyalty, so recommend away.

225/45/18 and 235/40/18 will not give the same speedo reading.

With 235/40/18, the speedo will read around 3-4% higher than the 225/45/18

The 225/45/18 is a recommended replacement for the stock RS 17's as it does not upset the speedo.

I am running 235/45/18 on my RS and I can tell you that my speedo reads a little high.

Will be switching to the 225/45's as a correctly reading speedo is a nice thing to have and the extra 10mm over the 230/40 will fill out the guards nicely :P

I've got Toyo Proxes4 all round, 235/40/R18 fronts, 245/40/18 rears, probably best for their prices IMO.

I have the Proxes 4 tyres from Toyo and they are the best tyres I have has thus far. . $1,080 fitted for all 4, so $270 each.

The toyo's have a high load rating 97w . . which were one of the highest for that class of tyre. and needed for the 1.8 tonne wagon.

Bit of a boo boo in my original post. Khumo's are KU 31, not HR 31.

Cost $290 per tyre in 245/45/18 although should be cheaper now, as this size is std equipment on VE 18's and also current falcon 18's.

My speedo is way out already with the current setup. I think it reads about 10% fast vs my tomtom.

A smaller aspect should somewhat address that right? Smaller diameter should give more revolutions for equivalent distance travelled?

I *think* it should be the other way around - I went from the standard C34 Stagea wheels with 225/50R16s to 245/40R18s and my speedo is much more accurate now, despite the larger rolling diameter...

So I took the GPS to check how far out my speedo is on the way down to watching the "Classics" at Phillip Island yesterday.

Since I have upgraded my wheels and using the 235/40/18's that came with, my speedo is 10-11% out (reading higher than actually travelling).

Looks like a good excuse to get fatter tyres next time :(

    that size
  • What normal profile choice do I have if i don't proceed with a low profile tyre?

The 3% variance is for variation in tyre from O.E. I would guess.

The Axis rim is 18x8" +30 offset. It will easily take a 245 wide tyre without looking too "muffin top" :D .

As per my previous post; a 245/45/18 gives a slightly larger rolling diameter, and tested against a GPS, reduced speedo error from 110 km/h at a GPS verified 99 km/h, to 110 km/h at a GPS verified 107 km/h.

Khumo KU31 in the 245/45/18 has a load rating of 100.

It's the RSD Rolling Stock Diameter that needs to be within the 3% variance as it messes with the speedo.

I swear by the Proxes 4, be sure what ever tyre you get has the appropriate load rating (eg 97w) as larger cars need a higher load rating, simply because they weigh more and is particularly important in heavy performance cars. I found many tyres had the right size but failed the load rating requirement.

I love the 245/40/18 97w profiles I have now and will not change. .

Remember the wider your tyre is, the side wall measurement changes in proportionate ratios. Which means a thinner tyre say 225/40 side wall will be a completely different size to a 245/40 side wall. It's all about relative ratio to tyre width.

Where does your 97w come from as I cant locate any 225 45 18 tyres with a 97w rating

Comments I have received seem to rate the falken 452just over the federal over the KU31.

Is that a fair commment.

I have usually run Potenza but just not economical at the prices they are sellinfg at .So now I am trading off safety a little bit for mileage .I was very disappointed with michellan Pilot precedes as they wore out real quick

send option1 an email and tell them what your looking for

they will recommend you a tyre and unless you can order from a wholesaler they will be cheaper that bob jane or other tyre places

they sell more than what they advertise, could be worth just going to see them

the ku36's are supposed to be a good semi-slick (beter than the federal rs-r's) but probably not what your after

don't really know much about any of the other tyres but i'll find out once i have some money for new wheels too

let us know how you go, where you went and how much it was tho
