I rekon they are fvcking sick.

Interior wise Id say they show their age, they only have cloth seats etc and 15+ years takes its toll on them...

But mechanically, they are sweet i rekon, IIRC, they come with a sick turbo from factory that is steel wheeled and/or ball bearing, not sure. But what ever it is, i know it lasts pretty well...

all turbo sr20 motors come with steel wheel turbos unlike the ceramic exhaust wheel turbos the rb's have.

the gtir runs a bigger turbo than the s13 cars (bush bearing t28 as far as i know), quad throttle bodies bigger injectors and a slightly better/stronger built engine and put out more power (an extra 18kw). motor wise they are generally good and don't really suffer from any problems that aren't common to the SR family. they do have a bit of a reputation for having dodgy gearboxes if they have had a hard life though, so that is about the only thing to look out for.

GTi-Rs are n14s though, even then I think the s14 SRs still have inferior turbos.

+1 on the gearbox too, I hear that they are just SSS boxes with a transfer case, and they arent really THAT beefy, still hold plenty of power I'd say...

I was looking at getting one not long ago too. I'd say go for it! but wait for one with low kms and/or good interior condition.

N13, S13, N14, S14, very different cars.... The only SR Silvia making more grunt than the GTiR was the S15, GTiR had T28, Quad throttles, solid lifters and possibly different bottom end. As far as weaknesses go:

-Gearbox, stronger than a TX3/BFMR/GTX, but still pissweak at best

-Interwarmer, an intercooler stuck right above the motor with no way for air to pass through, and all the heat out of the motor rises into it, plan was that it would protect it during rallies and also minimise lag, also great for rallying. reality, it caused the cars to overheat, and because the head has to be torqued down very precisely, once the car did overheat, it is hard to stop it, cars also loose 50+hp once the interwarmer comes into effect.

-Nose heavy, high tendency to understeer, due to being very short, and having a lot cramed into the front, with only a diff and fuel tank in the back...

-Brakes, pretty much sss brakes, with 172kw, and 1300 odd kilos...

-most likely been thrashed...

HAVING SAID THAT

I LOVE THEM!!

-don't launch it hard, (what 4wd turbo can you do this with)

-put a FMIC on it

-battery, Sub in the boot, and some good suspension, but you will never get near the limit day to day anyway

-plently of brake upgrades

-they are still the hottest hatch out there IMO

you can get a 13.0 out of one with nothing more than a boost tap . the gtir turbo actually flows more air than a s15 . 310 hp vs 330 hp worth of flow .

i recon theyre mint . good luck finding one that hasnt already had 3 engines and 4 gearboxs and 7 gauges screwed into the dash that dont do anything

Ones I have seen on the net all look to have been universally f**ked with over the years. Will probably still take a look at some. Thanks for the info 'cos I didn't know the gearbox was a weakness.

I've been thinking if I really one a car like this AND my GTST anyway, so I may just get something a bit newer, slower, and 'nicer'; a 'respectable' but still slightly sporty car if you like.

So I was thinking of a Toyota Altezza RS200. Not very fast but a 'nice' car w/out being bland and from a jelly mold. The sort of think you could pick a chick up in and not make her think you are a hooning wanker.

I'll keep the GTST for hooning about.

I will still see if there is a GOOD GTiR about though at an ok price.

Buy My Familia instead! It will sh1t all over a GTiR any day of the week.

They also only have 14 inch wheels, the radiator tops crack under the overflow hose and also just below the fill up point, seats are average, interwarmer is fine if you are moving and you can even see the temp of the engine go down if driving at 100kph on a cool night!

They look tough as nails though and you can eat you dinner off the rear wing ;)
