so much good infomation comes though this site its hard to keep up.

I personally am interested in the rb25det as i have one. So i want to start a thred were we can create a mod manual that people can add too. I am curently stripping my engine down after a blow turbo has spat its guts though my cooler and into the engine. (dam air filter cam off) so been searching for modes i can do with out going to extreme and high cost.

What i have found: ( most info from SydneyKids posts )

- use oil coolers, mount in a spoiler vet to get better flow.

- 9 to 1 compression or close to

- use the standard nissian head gasket, but 0'ring the block. aparently they seal better than a metal.

- standard injectors are ok , but use a fuel pressure regulator.

-upgrade fuel pump minimum, GTR fuel pump

-Restrict the oil flow to the cylinder head, there are 2 feeds from the block to the head, block off one of them which is the same as an rb26,standard.

-use safe air fuel ratios 12 to 1 as a limit

-Tomei poncams 256 to 260 give good power increase over stock through out rev range. They also dont need adjustment and standard timing gears can remain.

-rb30 bottom end is not good bang for buck when talking street cars

It would be great if people could state their best mods or worst. so we can create a very usefull thread, cost of mods would be great

I hope this gets people started.

yes i would like to modify my car it is a 85 pulsar hatch with a tip. it currently leaks lots of water from the cooling system and the gearbox is stuffed.

the best mod was when i replaced the standard air filter with another one from marlows.

the worst was when i tried to go 4wd driving at lancelin, hey tim!

Hmm, well to start with, the mods that you do and dont do, will vary greatly depending on the power you are aiming for. You say dont do injectors, but upgrade the cams? Why would you be putting in cams unless you are at the stage where you need to upgrade the injectors? asking for trouble.

Why pull the head off to o-ring the block unless you are once again chasing some decent power? certainly the stock head gasket is fine until well over 250kw. If you are pulling the head off, make sure you change the timing belt at the same time.

It could be argued that an RB30 is an excellent value for money upgrade, once again it depends on how much power you want and where you want your torque. I spent alot of money on cams, custom manifold, head gasket - once you figure in return from selling the stock RB25, a 3L conversion, such as the ones RIPS sell, would have probably made better economical sense, and given me a bottom end power band (which is where street cars spend most of their time) that just cannot be duplicated by an RB25 - just depends on what you are after.

I think if you want to start an 'power upgrade thread' you need to look at things from the beginning, and progress in a logical manner, once you start pulling the head off, it opens a huge can of worms, as then you start thinking about porting, cc combustion chambers, o-ring block and head (as mentioned) etc - talking some serious work here, and it can be very expensive.

A logical sequence of events IMHO would be

Exhaust (cat back or full system, and make sure you do something with the joke of a cat)

FMIC,

Pod - must be with a partition and CAI

Bleed or EBC

Fuel pump

Management (SAFC, ITC, full ECU - once again depending on what you are after)

If you dont have a full exhaust system, now is the time

Exhaust cam gear

Clutch (may have already given up the ghost - if you are chasing over 250rwkw, I would suggest a twin plate+ or otherwise a super single should be fine)

You now have around 200rwkw+ at 12.5psi boost, from here things get a bit tougher and more expensive. You need to have a good mind as to what you want to acheive power wise, and be careful not to over engineer the car

This is just the power side of things, think also about suspension, shocks and springs - or coilovers, castor, camber, diff, wheels, brake pads. You may not be doing all these straight away, but I can recommend you give them alot of thought, as being able to get power down, and handle well makes far more differance to the feel of the car, and the pleasure of driving than just the push in the back when you nail it -IMHO I learnt this the hard way spending thousands on power, only now spending probably around 1-2k on final sus mods like castor and diff, camber and hicas removal - bang for buck with suspension in phenominal.

Going further, if this is what you want, you should have full management, and hopefully some injectors on the way. Then comes the big one, what turbo? the choice in turbo will make or break an upgrade, so before it can be answered at all, you need to consider what sort of power you want, keeping in mind that a strong bottom end and mid range may mean you cant have a fantastic top end, midrange and top end, forget bottom end, etc. The more power you want, the more lag you will have.

Right about now is a good time to consider if you want to go down the RB25 path, or go 3L which will give you tons more torque down low, and is capable of spinning up a much larger turbo, quicker than an RB25.

Not that the car has to be a dog to drive off boost, but it will be very different. You also need to think about pushing the rev limiter right to compensate - really there are just so many variables here, its an entire thread on its own, that could go on for pages by itself.

Actually, having just written all this, I just remembered that www.meggala.com has a build up section that covers alot of this. It would be worth checking his site out.

good luck

EDIT: an oil cooler, a must for the track, otherwise debatable if it is really necessary for a car you just drive on the streets - cant hurt, but its not all that cheap.

I posted this up so long ago and did realy put alot of thought into it, i mean you can just do a search in the area of mods you interested in. But if people would like to ad there formula to make good power then get stuck in. thanks for taking the time steve.

mentoz: hey jame yeah it was fun whiping past some 4wd in a fwd pulsar just didnt think about having to slow down to turn around, (boged, and having every person shake there head as they went past.) :) good old days.

    • I should note too as I have all 4 wheel speed inputs to the emtron I now have the emtron controlling the attessa solenoid for 4wd/traction and launch control strategies.
    • It works quite well with the adjustibility within each of the programs of the turbolamik. Essentially p1 is drive and lockup comes on like a normal driver.  But in program 7 I have customised it to not request the lockup clutch to engage until something like 6500/7 when slip was the lowest.
    • Yep, I like that. The tags are only on the first post of a thread and we don't get huge numbers of new threads. Also, I plan to add some more report types and we could have a member report type like 'review tags' then members could flag if they thought a topic wasn't tagged correctly.  No way man, I dig the input. Thanks!
    • It's a valid thought. There's not exactly that functionality already (when creating a thread) - that's where the OP can use/create any tag they want. We'd have to come up with a way for the user to request their tags get reviewed or something. Otherwise the mods would have to review every new post's tags (for those that have them, anyway). There's kind of that functionality already exists to some extent, post facto of starting the thread, where the OP or any other user could report the post to admins, and request that tags get reviewed. We could do this already, and any user could already have made such a request. To make it a part of the forum proper, it would require an initial and an ongoing education programme, so that people know that it's a thing. OP based tagging/request for review would also require at least some (probably most) of the user base to be told that it's a thing they can do. Both of these things probably wouldn't spread too far and/or get used very much. If it was the standard approach on a lot of different sites, then it might do, because people would be used to it. Prank's approach to this differs from my original thought, by leaning into tagging. Which is fine - it's possibly better than what I originally suggested. In fact, I just went to the R32 GTR wiring diagram thread and added tags, including "Library". That's probably a good way to use tags and the idea of a library. We just have to drag together an (organised!) index of threads or posts that have that tag. I have yet to do any of my own follow up by pursuing worthy threads and posts and reporting/marking/tagging them for the library, such as the @Sydneykid stuff I was talking about, and possibly any amount of @Lithium 's and others' posts. At least if I tag them Library, we'll have a start.   Back to @Wazmond's idea as it relates to @PranK's, we might have some sort of a list of tags that are already used to scrape for this library. I'm not entirely sure how that would be presented or used, particularly if it got long. But it's yet another idea!   cheers
    • Just a thought, but instead of restricting, is it possible to do like an "up for review" kind of thing? Where say someone who's not an admin/mod tags, it would require approval for it to actually tag? User posts with a 'tag' > Admin/Mod Reviews > Approves tag > Tag now exists kinda thing? Just came across this thread so Im not too sure if Im straying off topic or not but forgive me if i am...
