AMS Smash The 9 Second Barrier at TX2K10

March 21st, 2010 Goto comments Leave a comment

After beating out all the other competitors in the dyno competition, AMS have driven this SR850 tuned R35 GT-R to a worlds first 9 second ET at Lonestar Motorsports Park on their first run of the day!

They went on to run a string of 9 second passes with the best ET being 9.89 @ 145 even after hitting the rev limiter in second. The best mph of the day was 146.96 mph which you can see in the timeslip in the gallery below.

To get there, the car runs an AMS SR850 upgrade package which includes:

AMS upgraded bolt on turbo’s

Upgraded actuators

AMS 90mm downpipes

AMS 90mm Resonated midpipe

AMS 90mm exhaust

AMS Front mount intercooler

AMS 3″ intercooler piping

HKS bov’s

AMS Large MAF intake pipes

AMS fuel System upgrade

Cobb AccessPORT

AMS Custom Race gas map (unleaded 109 octane Race gas)

With these mods the car is putting 765awhp and 738 lbft of torque to the ground. Impressive stuff and big big numbers from bolt on upgraded turbos. What will we see when AMS’s custom cast manifolds and even bigger turbos get bolted up to Chuck’s car?

They didn't do anything to the gearbox?

We worked with AMS in the US on this one and supplied them -

WR35TMVS our new high load 'Super GTR' transmission fluid

WR35PS GR6 Piston Seals

WR35CC GR6 Gear Fastener System

WR35CC-L GR6 Clutch Retaining Clips

This is not an advertisement, just pointing out there was some Aussie know how in that 9 second pass :ermm:

Please don't shoot me but isn't 9.89 sec actually 10sec in anybody's language other than a drag racer's? :)

I am fascinated how everybody calls an 11.99 sec pass an 11 sec achievement! No, it is not. That minor detail of 0.99 sec is 55m difference or 12 car lengths at 400m mark.

It does sound a lot better in the pub, I do admit.

It's an ET bracket. Ie 9.00-9.99, 10.00-10.99, 11.00-11.99.

when someone refers to "running 9's" they are refferring to breaking the 10.00 bracket....Circuit racers even do it

I would call it "running sub-10's" but it is a matter of convention, I guess. Thanks.

I was given one of these official RH9GTR stickers by Danny (of JMS fame) back in

2002 when I raced at the first Drag Combat meeting at Willowbank when the HKS

drag GTR was there running 7s. It was a huge honour to even have one of these

japanese stickers back then & there was no way I was going to stick it on my GTR

till I had the time to back it up. I ran a 10.9 second pass that day & waited till a few

months later back in Adelaide before I proudly displayed it on my windscreen after

running my first of many nines. (best I got back in those days - now over 7 years

ago - was a 9.45 @ 145mph)

All these years later, the fact that an R35 GTR can run nearly as fast with "light tuning"

is just astromonical. We spent hundreds of thousands of dollars to run those times back

then & there was no way our GTRs were street legal. Street drivable - sure, no problems.

My car was still "on the street" with Holinger, perspex windows, full cage, & 1 seat!!!

Awesome to hear that an R35 has cracked the sacred nines......... but dont be fooled.

There will be blood, sweat, & tears to keep it there. All those who see the number "9"

& take it with a pinch of salt - think again. The difference between 10.1 & 9.8 is huge.

There will be broken engines, clutches, etc etc. Mark my words....................

been there..done that.. Good luck trying to keep up with them.

A whole new generation of cheque book racers has emerged.

I will stick with my detuned 9 second R33 now turned into mid teens circuit racer

& leave my R35 as it is for fun & value factor.

Congratulations to AMS for doing it, keep up the good work.

Be interesting to see if someone will follow in their footsteps here in Australia.

Maybe the Willall R35 if we ever get a bloody Drag track again in SA?

    • You see R34 GTRs listed for 200-300k are they really selling for these prices? Kinda seems like the same ones listed all the time.
    • Only needed to pull out the seats, center console and gear shifter surround, took a weekend and a fair few beers. You get to look forward to finding all sorts of weird shit under the seats and carpet, I pulled out a Chinese dudes passport from 2003, 220 yen and a condom wrapper 😆
    • Well, turns out not a lot happened from back then to now, between life again, and working on 3 separate other cars (only one of which was mine, and will now be departing the household soon).   So I decided with the whole "don't go outside, it's a cyclone!" Turning in to being not a whole lot, I ventured down to the garage, found a couple of water leaks in the shed (the main one I've already fixed), and then ended up "stuck" as it started pouring rain, and I didn't want to walk back inside in the pouring rain. This meant I ended up taking a look at the Skyline, and trying to work out what past Matt had been upto. I retraced a few things out from scratch, added the rest of the power feeds in that I needed for the indicators, and headlights. Double checked I'd wired a few things up correctly (and worked out how I wired a few things to begin with), updated my sparse notes. Added one of the ground points. Oh, and got really really dusty, as the car is quite dirty. Wrote up quickly what should be left for me to do with the wiring too. Adding the below photos more for my records than anything else. I need to make myself a proper book for the car that details everything, and how I've done it, but for now, this is my records... The third image is my most important one for me, and I need to draw it out into a proper schematic eventually. The last photo is my re-written list, I'd have put it on the white board, except I had to take the white board down to fix one of the water leaks.
