Basically guys my situation is I was just given a subwoofer system including two subwoofers, two 4-channel amps and 2 capacitors. The system is used but in really good nick however it is probably been sitting around the house for at least 4 or 5 years judging by the fact the subs and amps arent made anymore. What i'm trying to workout is how they had it hooked up as short of going to the shop that installed it and asked what they would have done i'm quite baffled. The system is the following:

2 x 10" Eclipse SW8102.4 500W RMS, 4ohm Subwoofers

2 x Eclipse PA5422 800W Max Amp

This amp can run in the following:

200W x 4 2ohm (MAX)

120W x 4 2ohm RMS

85W x 4 4ohm RMS

240W x 2 4ohm RMS (bridged mode)

2 x capacitors

Now seeing as the amps can't be run in a single bridged mode the only conclusion I can draw is that the subs were running off of the one amp at 240W each, half what they could handle. And the second amp was used for speakers throughout the car. Does anyone else have any insight into this as to other possible ways it could be hooked up? The other option is that there was another mono amp that was forgotten about but even that doesn't make sense as who needs two 4channel amps. Any help would be appreciated. Also what gauge wiring should I look at to power this system? And do the brands matter for wiring or are the differences negligable as JB hifi recommended either Sony or Cadence wiring packs.

Cheers Jamie :ermm:

Also can post up pics if it would help.

hey jamie

you got the config with the first go, one amp for Front/Rear speakers, and one for the subs.

This should give a good balance of power between the speakers and the subs, although for pure Sound Quality you might back off the amp 4 the subs

the subs won't mind the lower power, just be sure to tune the amps properly once installed

Depending on your Front/rear speakers you could run the second amp in 4 chanel mode for Fronts and Rears OR run it in bridged mide (same as the subs) for the Front speakers and run the rears of the deck

I used 2 run a pair of Alpine MRV-F400z and 2 x 12"ZR subs in that config, great IF the front speakers can hack it

Wire Size : I'd go 4 guage, takes about 80A so pleanty of overhead . Don't 4get the fuse at the battery end of this cable

I'd also upgade your Earths to motor, battery etc

Brands don't really matter 4 the wire itself, just be sure it's OFC copper (Oxygex Free Copper), Stops corrosion , less Voltage drop

as for fuseholders and other gold plated fittings, spend the $$$. Cheap = nasty

Cheers for the quick reply mate, I think I need to invest in some quality front speakers. I'm not sure if the ones in there are stock, there a dark blue? There's also a pair of kenwood tweeters attached which came with the kenwoods that were in my rear parcel when I bought the car. I have since replaced the rear speakers with some MB Quart 6x9's but these decided to melt on me, thankfully the warranty covers it and i'll be getting them replaced. However with the subs I really don't have a need for the 6x9's as im assuming they'll just be drowned out? So I may get rid of them and get a quality component set for the front.

Yea i'm going to bring in a electrician mate to give me a hand with the wiring installation etc so it shouldn't be too much trouble upgrading my ground wires etc.

Would it even be worth hooking the second amp up to my current speakers? They look to be in a decent condition unlike some stock speakers i've seen in other cars mainly falcons.

Thanks again Jamie

Not sure bout the old fronts. pop one out and check the label 2 be sure. (Melting rear speakers seems 2 be a thing with skylines)

I'd be trying to swap them 6x9 for some 6" or 6.5" (4get which fits) for the fronts,

I had Quarts 5.25" in my last system, put them in a 2-3Leter fibreglass box, really gives some kick to things like snare drums (tight box, lots of power = :D:banana::) )

    • $170K. I asked one of the guys there as a joke if that price was just for the passenger seat as it was where the price sheet was... he tried really hard to crack a smile 😄 He also mentioned that every single part of the car was inspected and either restored or replaced with a new or as new part, or made from scratch. The interior was incredible, every inch like a new car.
    • Time for a modernisation, throw out the AFM, stock O2s, ECU into the e-waste bin. Rip out the cable throttle, IACV, pedal, etc. into the scrap metal bin. DBW, e-throttle, modern ECU, CANbus wideband, and the thing will drive better than when it left the factory.
    • I agree, don't go trusting those trims. As I said, first step is to put the logger away, and do the basics in diagnosis.   I spend plenty of time with data loggers. I also spend plenty of time teaching "technicians" why they need to stop using their data loggers, and learn real diagnostics.   The amount of data logs I play with would probably blow most people away. I don't just use it to diagnose. I log raw CAN data too, as a nice chunk of my job is reverse engineering what automotive manufacturers are doing.
    • I'm aware, but unless you're actually seeing the voltage the ECU is seeing and you're able to verify the sensors are actually working I find it hard to just trust STFT/LTFT. I will say, logging the ECU comes naturally to me because it's one of the lowest effort methods of diagnosis and I do similar things in my day job all the time. Staring at 20+ charts looking for something that isn't quite right isn't for everyone. NDS1 allows you to log almost everything so that's normally what I do and then sort out the data later.
