Definitely do an apprenticeship (or pre-app for that matter) while you are still young. I've been in the trade for the past 8 years, and my current job has taken me all over the country, as I work in a couple of quite specialised fields.

If you do end up getting a electrical apprenticeship, I'd advise to try not to end up being in construction, as you won't gain a great deal of knowledge. I've known people on the trade that were cable-tying for 3 months straight. The money is awesome, but I find there is little job satisfaction in construction. I'd highly recommend Industrial (my current field). You can gain knowledge in PLC's (programmable logic control), as well as various types of machinery. I've learned a great deal more working at my current job, than my 4 years in construction as an apprentice.

lol Nytsky sounds like you're lucky, most printers around here are lucky to be on $18 an hour, with the maximum for the label printers working 3 on 4 off being about $28 an hour which has to be individually negotiated with the boss, no adjustment for inflation, and having the blame put on for every job which is stuffed up.

Interesting that you say that there's lots of out of work printers, my former employer has had to bring over 3 tradesmen from england due to a lack of interest here! They have all said that over there the companies are still based in england, but the factories have been moved into Eastern Bloc countries. I can see the same thing happening here in the not so distant future, with a lot of Chinese coming over here to learn productivity strategies etc at the RMIT trade school, to then go and teach them there!

IMO the real future of the print industry here lies in newspapers and high volume and turnaround magazines which can't be easily and quickly produced and transported from overseas.
