Battery Vents, Required If They Are In The Engine Bay? Or Only In Boot?

Recommended Posts

I have a question about battery vents, I realise that proper sealed ones do not require them but the cheaper type do. Now is this only if they are located in the boot in a box? Or is it if they are located in the engine bay as well? If so, where must the breather hose be attached to, just venting to atmosphere?

From personal experience be wary of batteries that are sealed but have vents.

If they have vents run a hose from the vents down to a point below your car so the acid will not spray on your car and stuff it up.

I had one installed in the engine bay without the hose and it sprayed acid everywhere when you start to throw the car around a bit. The problem then is that because the battery was sealed I could not put any water back into it to top it up and had to throw it away because it was low on acid and stuffed.

I now only use fully sealed batteries on the boot or if it is in the engine bay one with caps so you can top it up.
