What's wrong with adjustable Koni's for the front too?

Your rears ............. internally or externally adjustable?

Cheers, D

you can get standard shocks that are adjustable.

just cos they are adjustable doesnt mean they are coilovers.

if you want coilovers, use the search function. you will find that the S13 silvia coilovers are useable. quiet a few extra parts needed though.

its been asked 100 times before.

if youre real clever you can make your own...

Do you have rear coil overs or standard shocks?

The stock rears have the spring over the shock, but they are not coil overs as such.

You can buy Koni inserts for your stock struts & they are internally adjustable.

Cheers, D

thanks Andrew ill have a look into it..

the rear are a koni coilover i dont think they are an insert ill have a look tonight and let you know tomorrow.

Didn't say the rear was an INSERT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Fark it ................ why do I bother with idiots

made me giggle a bit...

Tell me tho D, why is the rear not a coil-over... To my mind, a coil-over is just a shock abosorber with the spring seat on it...

appreciate if you could explain that to me.

MY308U - When you say adjustable, do you mean the compression and rebound are adjustable in the shock abosorber, or that the springs can be wound up and down to adjust ride height???

Daewoo

Darryl,

We commonly refer to coilovers as being multi height adjustable as well See Pic 2 JIC. That is wind them up & down to suit your need, but a standard factory set up in the MR/HR/DR30 rear is only height adjustable with a/mkt shocks with multiple slots for the spring circlip that holds up the spring seat.

And the Koni shocks & insetrs are only compression adjustable and the rebound sorts itself out from the adjustment. They have about 2 turns in the adjustment and have to be done before assembly with the spring.

As nothing has been said about what he has, I'm guessing he has a stock set up & really needs the Koni front insert, p/n 86-2224 for his stock struts and puts whatever springs he chooses with them.

Thanks D,

So we are both right... Coilovers don't have to be height adjustable, it is just that now the name is usually reserved for adjustable suspension... I thought I was going mad...

So if a macpherson strut suspension is also adjustable, is it now referred to as a coilover or as a strut???

In my experience, adjustable suspension is a bit of a waste of money... even when I was swapping between circuit racing one weekend (wanting the car low) and rallying the next (wanting the car high) I rarely adjusted it... every time you adjust the car, you need to get the wheel alignment done again (even though I was getting free alignments it was a hassle) and also, the car is usually out of the optimum height for the shock absorber...

The idea of getting road suspension and then 'dropping the car to the deck' for a track day will usually have your handling and lap times going backwards...

Dunno about that!

You would suggest these are coil overs when the only hieght adjustment is in the length of the spring.

    • What could be causing my clutch problem besides a bad master or slave then? Both those parts are new
    • Just came across this, but in QLD I start leave again in 2 weeks, if it is still available I might drive up and check it out Unless, @MBS206 do you live near here????, if so I could hit you up with a finders fee https://www.gumtree.com.au/s-ad/hope-island/auto-body-parts/nc-mx5-factory-hard-top/1328976391
    • My hold point for future mods is that I want a OEM detachable hard top first, but, finding one is a pain, MX5 Mania are looking for one for me, but, as hens teeth are more common, finding one in Australia is proving problematic  I can get a OEM one from overseas, hell, you can still get new ones in 'Merica, but, shipping is a absolute killer and I cannot justify the cost, or the risk of it being damaged during transport As for the aftermarket hardtops, whilst they do the job of being a hard top, and are fine for a track car, they don't seal well (read: leak like a sieve in the rain), and you need a plastic/poly rear window, plus they are a bolt in option only and not made to be easily removed I liked how the hard top on my NB could be fitted, and removed, by myself, in less than 5 minutes I know it sounds bad, but I'm waiting for someone to write off a car with one so I can swoop in on their pain, it will go to a good home though, so my guilt of this is tempered
    • I’ve got one on mine and it’s fine,
    • No, you don't want to plug the vacuum line, as that will turn that side of the booster into an air spring and probably make it feel worse. I'm not saying that the GTR master itself doesn't need a booster. I haven't paid attention to the GTR one to know what size it is cf the non-GTR ones. But when you think about it - they have to do the same job, which is to move a little slave piston a few mm to do what it is supposed to do, and that final action is the same on all the cars. So, it is very unlikely that the GTR MC is any different than the others, because it has the same pedal stroke and the same output requirement. The booster just makes it feel easier. I'd suggest you probably have an actual hydraulic problem. It's totally common on these old shitboxes.
