lol that could be true Dan... it's the same concept as a Hoax virus. non-existant virus, warnings spread like wildfire, sometimes has the same effect as the real thing.

Police force issue warning about non-existant speed cameras, the news and media make a big hype about it, everyone tells their friends and family about it, suddenly everyones being careful not to be caught by non-existant speed radars. But yes, that wouldn't make money so I don't think they would do that... and you can't say they won't also use marked mobile radars as well... they need to make as much money as possible in the holiday season *sarcasm*

But hey, either way, if it does indeed help reduce the death toll and accidents over the holiday period, then that's a good thing, there's no denying that... but I still don't believe that this is the way of going about it!

What makes me even more annoyed about these cameras, is the number of cases where they've been proven to be incorrectly set up and drivers have been incorrectly fined, but most just take the fine.

There was a case in Victoria (I'm pretty sure it was Victoria, I can dig up the article later) where one driver took it through court over a long period of time, got hold of the technical manuals for the mobile cameras, and in the end it was proven that they were set up WAY out of specifications in the manuals, and the police department by court order had the equipment confiscated and ordered to make a pay-out.

In the end, whilst most drivers may be doing the right thing, its cases like this that make a driver extra wary about mobile radars and slow down even more to ensure that they don't get fined. Afterall try proving your innocence if your incorrectly fined for speeding in a Skyline...

I wouldn't be annoyed if they just flat out said it was revenue raising, instead of just doing this and pretending it alone is going to actually have some effect on the road toll.

You'd still be annoyed. Why lie to us?

Successive state governments in the eastern states certainly (not sure about TAS and WA) have rooted pillaged and missmanaged the finances and revenues of the said states atrociously for so long and to the degree that they ere essentialy broke so anything that raises revenue is a goer, got a Railway ? -flog it off , in Qld they'd rent out Anna B for Saturday night special tricks if they thought they could get taker so no-one should be supprised if the motorist is a target.

There's millions of us and the road laws are now so draconian that that not getting a ticket for something is becoming virtualy impossible, no matter how saintly a driver you are, so there can be no reason for anyone rational to not understand that the whole motoring community is been recognised as a cash cow to be milked as hard as possible , it's an asset that just can't be exhausted it's self funding, growing and self replenishing.

Any mealy mouthed plattitudes about speeding are quite simply smoke and mirrors and not even good ones , 50% of all road deaths are caused by bad roads it's that simple , speeding makes up about 15% the facts and figures are there for anyone to find .

So get used to it-you're in the barrel next--. :P --for something .

I think you'd find unmarked ninja cameras WOULD make a difference. Have you driven through the silly new tunnel? The cameras aren't marked yet, but people know they're there... somewhere. So everyone drives at 50-70kph. I've only ever seen three other cars do 80 through there. A Porsche, a Supra and another Skyline. I overtake EVERY SINGLE PERSON in that tunnel, doing 75-80kph the whole way.

If everyone knew that there would be unmarked cameras potentially ANYWHERE at any time, they'd all drive like nanas on every street. Yes, it'd suck that everyone would be doing 40-50 on main roads, but after the cops decide to fine them for going too slow as well, we should see a nice end result :P

we have portable cameras in WA that have warnings afterwards.

people still drive like ass clowns

Okay so we have established that they are becoming increasingly sneaky.. Can anyone verify if its true that if you are caught doing say 63 in a 60zone, u will incur a fine? I heard something about that its a speed limit so it isnt meant 2 be gone over.. So people would incur fines.. :P

I've heard too many mixed stories about this to know if it's fact or fiction. From what I can gather, they're saying that with how good the technology is getting they can get you to the number, so why let people off who always do 3 or 4 over. Last I heard was if you came up in the system for always being over - you'd get a fine.

It just doesn't seem like it could work though. All you need is your tyre pressure higher or lower then they were when your car left the factory, and it'll throw it out... or put on your spare tyre and it throws it out etc etc. It's all well and good that police say 'it's the motorists responsibility to have their speedo checked and make sure it's accurate' but they can be thrown off by so many things that I think it might all be a bit of a myth for the 2 and 3 km over thing.

yep, there's your problem right there.

I've seen it in Brisbane too.

Yesterday driving down Boundary Rd at Coopers Plains not far after the railway crossing heading towards sunnybank way. Green Van with the "Every K Over Is A Killer" (geez I hope I don't die doing 61km/hr!) was parked SO far from the road that I have no idea how they got accurate readings (i'm not exaggerating either, it looked like it was someones van parked in front of their house that had a lot of grass area out the front), and the sign wasn't before approaching the van, rather it was a bit after it. not a lot, but you would notice this sign when it was too late. What did the sign say? Well if I hadn't seen one close up before I couldn't really tell you cause the thing was so small and might as well have not been there at all! It's on the ground too! So how are the vehicles in the right lane supposed to know when the sign barely comes up to the height of an average car tyre!

The road wasn't very busy either and everyone knew the van was there hence the slow down to 50km/hr... so needless to say a few hours later when I drove past again the van was no where to be seen. Not making enough money obviously, had to find another hot spot!

oh, but "Every K Over Is A Killer"!! :P Or so they say...

Speed cameras catching people doing minuscule amounts over the limit isn't making a big deal of difference to the incidents that occur on the roads. In Brisbane they are doing the "Distracted Drivers are Dangerous Drivers" Campaign.. or whatever its called.. point is, bringing so much focus on the speed being travelled for most motorists is taking away focus from the road and what's going on around them. Now I know a lot of people are going to say oh I can maintain my speed easily it's not that big a deal to glance every now and then. That's good, but some people on the roads are bad enough at focusing on driving properly, we don't need them slowing everything down to a stupid speed while they're busy making sure the speedo's below the limit.

If there was a greater police presence on the roads, then maybe there'll be less SS Commodore Ute's flying down residential roads at wayyyy excessive speeds! and I'm not making a generalisation either here, I'm talking from an experience I had a few months ago. Driving in East Brisbane one day, taking my time on a sunday wasn't in a hurry.. thank goodness cause if I turned into that street at a "usual driving speed" I'd have been wiped out and probably down the other end of the road from the speed this ute was travelling!! All I can tell you is that it sounded like a V8, and was purple! I can't even say for sure if it was a Commo or not! These are the types of drivers that they need to be pulled into line, and to do that effectively they need a greater police presence to "stop" them from driving in that manner, not suprise them with a fine in the mail and in the mean time someone COULD get killed! Show a presence, and if they act in such a manner then they should suffer the consequences.

I'd like to see less drivers that feel the need to just jump in front of me on multi-lane roads without indicating! or drive around with their high beams on for no particular reason. Or the ones that don't know which lane they want to drive in so they drive a bit in both. or decide that they don't want to be in the right turn only lane and merge lanes half way around the turn into Garden City from Logan Road nearly driving into me! or the guy that doesn't check his blind spot when merging into my lane on the M1, indicating after he starts merging! lucky there was no one in the lane next to me or that would have been a fatal accident, and there was no speeding involved in that one!

Better driver training programs (particularly for young people starting to drive), a greater police presence, and much better quality roads, is the key to reducing accidents and fatalities on the roads. It's about time the Government stops focusing so narrow mindfully on speeding.

I particularly enjoyed an article in Wheels a few years back that discussed the RACQ/RACV findings that sepeeding was a factor in roughly 11% of all fatal road accidents in the past year. In other words, 89% of all fatalities have NOTHING TO DO WITH SPEEDING! Speeding can definitely be dangerous but they focus so much attention on a problem that figures show to be a minority.

Remember they also state that speed "is a factor" in 11% of road fatalities. So if a 12 year old steals a car, while drunk, with 7 mates in the back, and they have no seatbelts, and the tyres are bald, and he's steering with his feet so he can smoke a bong while he drives, in the wet, and they run a red light and hit another car whilst doing 70 km/h in a 60 zone, then this too can be placed in the "speed was a contributing factor" basket.

Solution: speed cameras! So of course if you just steal the car to begin with then you're sweet.

Anyone drive on gympie road during the day? just on the northern side of stafford road intersection in the S bend, both ways they have some steel boxes setup, this morning in traffic i noticed they house traffic "monitering" cameras. If anyone is stuck in traffic that way tomorrow morning have a look at them.

We had them on the logan motorway on ramp for a couple of days. Now we have these litle sneaky ones that fit under the armco that could easily go un-noticed.

i saw in the cmail a few months ago they were taking old trady vans and fitting them out with air con n shit to use as unmarked vans i think this will be the ones to look out for. i heard there were some new average speed cameras out here now is that true?

They had one up the road from the BP at Goodna, White Pajero, black windows and the globe sticking out the snorkel. Funny that, you should just look out for cars that have tint you can't see through sitting on the side of the road.
