Anyone Been Defected For Aftermarket Low Mount Turbo?

Hi,

I am relatively new to the skyline scene and own an R34 GT-T. I have done all the basic mods and am ready for a larger turbo. It is 95% a road car. My previous car I went to a lot of effort to have it legal as it had a highmount turbo and was very obvious when you opened the bonnet. So my thoughts have been to limit myself to a hiflow turbo so that police cannot hassle me (exterior of the turbo is same as standard). I have been pulled over once so far and he shone a torch down to the turbo but I dont understand what he can possibly see from doing that. When I look down there I cannot see any part of the turbo.

I would prefer to install an aftermarket turbo (garret or similar) but dont want to have any risk of police troubles.

So my question is who has been defected for installing an aftermarket turbo in the factory location with all other stock piping etc in place?

Any advice much appreciated!

most of the time prob not unless they really know what there doing to them as long as its not sticking up top mount they usually let it go and a airbox helps makes it look more standard

thats what i am thinking, although if they really know what there doing, what can they do?

does the factory heat shield fit over a GT3076?

Prob will issue you with a epa but as I said I have been pulled over countless times many areas no heat shield and with a pod on and they had no clue long as its down low they dont make a fuss unless its petit then maybe different story. the factory heat shield can fit but will need a lil bit of modification maybe a new braket for it to bolt on to and bending it abit more

i run an HKS 2835 (which is roughly the same physical size as a 3076) and you CAN see it from various angles

with the stock heatsheild it would be fairly stealth, but not 100%

if you are that worried get a highflow, then even the mcleod boys cant tell

You could paint the comp housing black, and get a gt3076 or 71 with the 2.75 or 3 inch inlet, then you dont need big intake piping, probably get one of the silicon stockish intakes in black to go on. IMO black is your best friend

I agree, my cooler and piping is all sprayed black. I had a cop shine his torch on it from the front and could not see it. I also have a boost tee that I sprayed black and he did not find that either. I understand this guy might not be that clued on but he seemed to know where to look straight away.

Only thing though the standard comp housing isnt black so wouldnt that make it stand out?

The other option is the PU hi flow with the larger aftermarket 0.82 exhaust housing, that way the comp housing still looks standard. I am guessing most cops would look at the comp housing to see if it has NISSAN on it and if it does fine.

The only way to keep a lowmount legal without ANY worry - is to have one the same size as the factory turbo.

IE a hi-flow, replacement of same comp cover size etc.

Yeah ok thats what I thought.

What do you think about a larger 0.82 housing on the factory comp cover? Obviously technically its not legal but I think it would be pretty hard to spot.

Heres my GT35R on HKS Lowmount... Ive done what I can to make everything as stealth as possible, you can hardly see the turbo, not much I can do about the wastegate though!

You have an external gate sticking out the top... Hardly stealth.

My external gate was actually HIDDEN under the manifold, you couldn't see it without going underneath the car.

Issue was the 0.7 A/R comp cover, certainly much larger than factory... hence Vic EPA - game over.

You cant buy the HKS low mount manifolds brand new anymore, but they come up on ebay and these forums ocasionally. All the piping is custom, the airbox heatsheild is just a UAS fibreglass one painted black, the heatsheild on the manifold is custom and the wastegate is mounted on a custom adapter to fit the manifold.

Nismoid, I realise that, said I did what I could to make it as stealth as possible...

unless the cop has xray glasses your hiflow wont be caught... its completely standard from the outside.

Pu High flow in .82 turbine housing. Fits upto stock manifold, dump, lines, capable of upto 300rwkws and still have Nissan comp housing.

We can build a with 3076 profile BB or Sleeve in .82 turbine housing with stock comp housing. Run that with a high pressure actautor and wastegate controller. With about 21psi flat you should get 300rwkws. Full boost at 4300RPM.

Other option is run GT35 turbine with 76mm comp in stock comp housing. This would be abit laggier but will produce lot more torque then running GT30 turbine wheel.

Given some wheels in the GT3X series were not made with such a small comp housing in mind...

With the 56T 76mm comp wheel I've had a customer making 282rwkws with stock comp housing. The main difference in result compare to a .70 comp housing is that you get more mid rang but sort of flat top end.

Or we can extend the stock comp housing and make it into .70 A/R like what we do to stock R33's turbine housings.
