Seriously man i feel so sorry for you, it almost seems like ppl think that we have nothing better to do accept deal with this shit. Honestly, i think that the first test should be free as they don't have any evidence to support the epa notice.

All that said- "cop" it on the chin and move lol

I agree mate, you should have to go and get the test (even that is shithouse because it costs you your time) and if you pass then no cost, if you don't then $75 fine and that's fair enough.

are u sure your exhaust is under 90db birds?

i mean seriously you guys sound like idiots most people are happy to just get an exhaust noise test really fkn go to court and blah blah load of rubbish let me know how you go with it.. ill be happy to laugh at you when you lose.

Look I haven't had my exhaust tested but my previous exhaust was a JASMA approved system (which passed roadworthy) and this new exhaust is actually quieter. Why would you laugh at me for losing when I'd be trying to fight something that you yourself know is not right? I don't like the odds of me winning either, but if everyone carries this suck-it-up-princess mentality then that will just allow police further rights to do what they like to our vehicles. I'd be happy to set precedent for our rights as vehicle owners and road users. Can you imagine the uproar if the police started issuing every single car they saw (import or not) with a "pay $75 to go test this vehicle because it might not meet emissions standards" notice? And let's face it, not many cars still meet the emission standards they were made to. Our state government would get chucked out on that alone. The fact it's only happening to car enthusiasts (who won't band together for class action) makes little impact on the government decision making process.

what exhaust are u running birds out of interest? if its 3" cat back or more ill be suprised if you pass.

basically all hoon/car laws are guilty until proven otherwise.. ie defect notices and hoon laws.. impound first court second

3" turbo back with a cat, middle resonator and something of a restrictive muffler at the end. It's really not that loud but I guess we'll see when I get the test done.

feel your pain birds.

i JUST recieved my EPA today for noise as part of my defect earlier this month to.

except i got done for a lot. (wheels/rideheight/coilovers/other crap)

i think its bullshit to. its an instant $75 for something that MAY not be illegal.

its the same as the law, where an officer can "spot" you speeding, how retarded.

honestly, my exhaust is WAY to loud, + a tip missing from bottoming out and smashign it off(rideheight fail).

but for other cars ive seen EPA's it seems imports are a crime to drive.

i hope you fight it birds, but at over 2k for a good barrister its hardly worth the effort..

Well you kind of deserved it, your ride is sitting that low on the tyres man lol. The EPA test is garbage though. I don't care how loud your exhaust is, the bureacracy of these fines and tests should also be carried over to you not paying that money until it's proven illegal by a decibel meter. If I was to take this to court I wouldn't be taking a lawyer with me. Unless you're a bazillionaire it's seldom worth going to court on principal alone. They also scare people away from court with threats that you can get fined several thousand etc.

Wow can't believe some of you. Lol go to court for what? Because a cop gave you an EPA? I guarantee most of your exhausts are over 90db as is mine. If a cop sees a cannon on the back of your car he will assume your car is loud but tell me is he right? My guess is yes.

Unfortunately it's on you to prove your car is legal and it is unfortunate that we also have to pay for it. But why whinge about something that you know is illegal when you put it on the car. Simple thing. Either stop complaining about it and take it on the chin or do what Emsta did and buy a quiet little girls car so you can be left alone

My muffler has a twin tip that is about, if not the same size as the standard Skyline exhaust, so there's no cannon assumption here. I don't know if my exhaust is illegal, I had it made up by a shop that never said anything about it being illegal or not. That's the bullshit part of this EPA test. I will never stop complaining about shit that pisses me off. I've been robbed of $75, I'm sorry if this money means more to me than it does to you.

i was the same and last minute bailed out- you can't win because the court can always say that at the time you had a different exhaust fitted to your car and you swapped it back.

That's the unfortunate reality of it. In the end it would still amount to my word vs officer and the time in between that I could have modified the car.

As above, you can record any conversation you are privy to without the consent of the other party.

Note that police also often record the conversation so be careful of being tricked into admissions.

I'll be doing this from now on. Also video recording it too so I can show that I had the same exhaust system on when pulled over as I do if I pass the test.

Now before I even think about contesting this thing I'll be writing to the EPA and asking for the report content, i.e. what specifically I was challenged on, because you can get done for intake modifications too and, who knows, he might not have liked my intake equipment hence didn't even check the exhaust system. If it's my exhaust system, and I pass the test...then I'll be contesting it.

i was more laughing at the others then yourself birds if u go to court.

having said that i thought i read somewhere the jasma exhausts dont pass anyway and rwc is different to epa.

the problem with the test is that its 75% of your peak RPM which you rarely drive at and never for a sustained period the test is fkd imo but you cant change it.. my car with completely stock 33 gtst-t exhaust pulled 86db.

good luck.

yeah jasma approved exhaust dont matter here as it generally wont pass epa

all the jasma exhausts ive had/got are still pretty loud, the one on the 32 atm is two massive resonators and still wont pass

and one i did own was just a straight pipe with a canon (catback) it was close to 100db

jasma exhausts only have to comply with the limit over in japland. which is around 92db from memory. almost twice as loud as the 90db we are meant to comply with. *numbers may be wayy off as im going from memory*

been reading about this operation pipedown with interest, as the local cops go around profiling all of us who sit in carparks talking at night on suspicions that we may be 'hoons'. The joke is on them when they don't look twice at the 110db Datto sitting there LOL. Seems that old cars are fine to be insanely loud, same goes for Harleys, some of them are fkn earsplitting, like they made my R32 with straight pipes sound reasonable.

BTW guys i've gotten out of an EPA notice / canary before by explaining to the cops that I had a JASMA spec exhaust and that it had to be manufactured under 92db and showing them the plate on the rear muffler etc.

Edited by bozodos

im gunna call bs because the limit is 90db so what would they care about a plate saying about 92db since its still over? sounds like a retard cop and a once in a lifetime story.. or a bit of chinese whispers

he wasnt talking about that.. it was the page of crap posted ..

this operation is finished now isnt it?

It is, but they will probably still try and pull Skylines over whenever they can... Since they reckon Skylines are the loudest car out there...

I guess it doesn't really matter whether the operation was on or not, TMU will always be doing their job, but it's just a matter of the number of cops on the roads.

Well... I think you are wrong, because throughout the operation, I've seen MANY cop cars pulling people over and honestly, 90% of them were shitboxes that are definitely over the noise limit :(

So they aren't JUST picking on Skylines/imports, as they did pull over other loud cars on the road as well.

But then again, I'm sure if they had 2 loud cars in sight and one is a Skyline and one is a shitbox, they'd pull over the Skyline lol

wrong, wrxs are generally louder than skylines even stock to stock. :(

But then again, I'm sure if they had 2 loud cars in sight and one is a Skyline (or other import car) and one is a shitbox, they'd pull over the Skyline (or other import car) lol

and this is so true :(

Haha no its true alr33x, i started getting stuck into them cause i'd just changed it over and they were trying to pull this 'oh its sooo loud' thing out of their arses, when half the town owns obnoxiously loud harleys, 2 stroke dirt bikes and "muscle" cars.

You don't see (well I don't at least) GT Falcons, Monaros, Trans Ams etc getting around with canaries much do you?

Oh yeah, we do tend to get the dumb cops here, which can either be a good or bad thing depending on the circumstances. With that particular lot who pulled me over that day, I spent 10 minutes arguing with them that the cat temp sensor which was cut was not the 02 sensor and had nothing to do with emissions, as well as having to explain that the 1998 on the blue plaque meant engine CC's not the manufacture date.

Yer I ain't saying my JASMA was legal...just that this current exhaust is quieter than my JASMA was and really should not warrant the hand out of an EPA notice based on what a cop thinks. Cops aren't friggen decibel meters...it's bullshit that this fine is served as a subjective, qualitative measure. But like I said it may not be exhaust that he reported me for, it's just that my EPA notice is demanding my whole car be tested for exhaust/emissions etc.

Fark I had no idea decibels were THAT non-linear :D

as well as having to explain that the 1998 on the blue plaque meant engine CC's not the manufacture date.

LOL you wouldn't have that problem with an RB25 :P

Out of interest to most of you that got done during this period were they giving full emission epa's or exhust ones? if there exhuast who cares its two sec to swap and pass.

I'm pretty sure mine is a full emissions test. The absolute works. Which sucks, because the cop told me he didn't care about my intake...and didn't look at my exhaust...yet he still reports me to the EPA for a work over. He saw my hail damage too...you'd think I could find sympathy there given I have to fork out a couple of grand just to get that repaired.

Throw your rocks, but right now Holdens are sounding like a good option...

wrong, wrxs are generally louder than skylines even stock to stock. :D

Lol, I was referring to the article that was in the papers a week or so ago, saying out of all those people that was caught with loud exhaust, the majority of them were Skylines :P

Fark I had no idea decibels were THAT non-linear :D

see below

LOL you wouldn't have that problem with an RB25 :P

hahaha not for a few hundred years atleast

db's are logarythmic to the base-10?

year 12 physics taught me something :D

read? http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Decibel

this. 3dB increase = double sound volume

    • Update: Tunehouse looked into the problem and identified a wiring issue between the camera unit and the connector. They managed to get it working , but did warn me at some point it will stop working again. From their perspective it is unserviceable and will need replacement. They did some research and found that the new replacement camera would be Approx $1400 supply only (their fitting cost would be $190) . They did provide the part number (28442-JL05B) and a quick google of the part number shows that these are rather expensive brand new (seemingly no longer in manufacture) for the places that still have them in stock, with the used option potentially presenting  the same issue down the track at some unknown point. They are happy for me to supply the part so that they can fit it. Decisions, decisions... I can definitely recommend Tunehouse (thankyou Vee37!). Cost for the diagnosis was as quoted  ($190) , car was ready on time and communication was top notch. Their workshop is super clean and modern, and there was plenty of car candy parked out the front on the day I went.   Would definitely go back.

For the outdoor air sensor and sunlight sensor, disconnect the wiring connected to CN1-11 of the air conditioning harness from the harness and connect the sensor side wiring to earth. For the indoor air sensor, disconnect the wiring connected to CN2-3 of the air conditioning harness from the harness and connect the sensor side wiring to earth. The connector PIN numbers listed here are the genuine A31 PIN numbers. To avoid incorrect wiring, check with a tester before wiring. Also, disconnect the wiring in a location close to the sensor. The disconnected harness side wiring will not be used, so be sure to insulate it." Wish someone sold a conversion harness to just plug-and-play a Kouki 180sx digital climate control into C33/A31. I'm decent with wiring but feeling kinda lazy about taking this on. Edit: Did some more digging and found a helpful Minkara blog post about the conversion as well: https://minkara.carview.co.jp/userid/1831116/car/1360568/2284209/note.aspx "After installation is complete or the battery is replaced, you need to go into self-diagnosis mode and set the internal air recirculation. The way to do it is to "hold OFF with the key on for more than 5 seconds, set the number to 5, then press 卍→C." ↑↑↑It probably won't make sense unless you actually try it (・∀・)." Lol wtf
