I'm a member of an ex-service organisation, and in the last issue of their quarterly magazine, the following appeared, under the heading " 50 Years Ago " You'll love it. ( especially the Victorians)

Melbourne police have caused outrage by stopping motorists on a suburban street to see how many had been drinking - 46 of the 124 stopped admitted they had been. The police Commissioner, Mr. S.H.Porter, hinted he did not entirely agree with this operation., saying " I might be quite annoyed myself if I was stopped while driving home and asked whether I had been drinking."

Ah yes! I knew I used to drive in paradise, way back then - The police were just as relaxed about most aspects of driving - effectively no real speed limits outside towns, etc., etc. You really don't know what you missed. Freedom ! Freedom ! in all sorts of ways - not just motoring.
