So in your absolutely ridiculously over exaggerated examples above, these 'DOZENS' of cars are running identical boost, ignition maps, cam timing, fuel mixtures...cmon man, get your hand off it ffs...

Umm, no I haven't. They are either friends, or known cars to me... hell some of these cars i've sourced the damn parts for! How is that exaggeration? It's fact.

Once again another failure to notice an important part of the statement:

Now fair enough there is some minor variance

They all come out of the same workshop, same motor builds, same amount of boost, could assume the tunes would probably very similar as well given it is the same bloke doing it.

A degree of timing here, 2% injector duty there, 86mm vs 86.5mm pistons, +/- 1 degree of cam gear action = all minor variance.

If you wanna get all excited though, go for you life - kind over having to broken record each time because you can't accept any of it.

I would like to see a comparison of exhaust temps after repeated thrashing....

Well off you go then. You go buy a EGT, aftermarket & stock dumps, and go do your own testing. Nobody is stopping you from producing your own facts/testing/evidence here - given you've not produced one iota of it in two discussions now.

I'm not going to swap dumps just to satisfy you champ.

wtf do exhaust temps have to do with anything?

All X-force stuff is, is the same china crap you buy from ebay but with a bigger price tag and a X-force badge welded to it

Agree with top half - sort of ;)

Disagree with bottom half though... the xforce stuff isn't "that bad". The older stuff was admittadly poop...

Last couple of years though it's not bad for what you are spending if you chose to do so.

If we were comparing 2 identical cars, high temps would be a result of excessive back pressure or poor flow....thats wtf it has to do with it.

Nismoid, what part of his comment do you agree with? The part to do with the fact he disagreed with what I posted?

And im not asking you to change dumps, im just saying that your ONE OFF peak power dyno pull comparison is not the only issue to consider here.

Seems to me if youre using it, its the bollocks, if youre not, its not needed...

Tell me again how sh1t my fuel economy is please oh wise one....lol.

I have an xforce catback. And, its a 3". Thats right, 3".

I have had it since new in 2005, sounds quite tough at times.

I completely forgot its a 3" and somewhere along the way, years ago, just assumed it was a 3.5" - i recall buying 3.5" but whatever thats 5 years ago. I do however the company it was from (justjap) saying it was direct fit - well, that wasnt true, costing more in hourly labour.

Now its making a tad over 600hp at the wheels, I think its time to go larger, but i have to say for the price they are, they arent a bad buy. Although for anyone reading this and looking to buy one, dont be put off by the brand, mines doing the job....

If one car had a restriction it would show up on a dyno run, and the state of tune...Ie having less ign timing....which causes high egts

So, If 2 engines are making the same power with the same mods bar 1 having stock dumps and the other aftermarket ones and all else being equal (which the cars r31 is talking about they pretty much are) then why would one have higher EGTs?

Im talking about repeated pulls which would more closely replicate the real world, like what would happen on the track, not a one off dyno pull mate...

Anyway, go blow through a straw...then go blow through a garden hose...

unless you cut the garden hose real short im pretty sure the straw would be easier :D

Back to back R32 std dumps and equal length front pipes (unsure of brand but quality jap) and the greddy front dump combo kit. Car tune was untouched and both pulls were done at the same AIT, oil and water temps (within a degree or two).

Included ambient temp comparo so you can see it is indeed not a correction variance

peak and power from 5000rpm was near identical power but we saw 18kw and 56nm @ 4000rpm upto 34kw and 69nm @ 4500 on this GTR, i reckon with tighter gate adjustment it would have been even better (as would the std runs) but you can see i pulled out of the run (and tightened gate for the next round of runs).

May be worth asking 9KRPM for an independent opinion as he saw some gains from memory.

I generally dont bother getting customers to fork out the extra (the greddy items are hell dear) as the stock gear does the job nicely (especially R34) even the std manifolds are not worth changing, but if the customer want every last NM its the piece of kit i recommend. Others may get better or worse results but all i can do is post my results.

Trent - how large were the front pipes in size outta interest?

(got any R33/R34 ones? :D)

70 mm primary's (one with flex pipe) with 85mm secondary to cat flange.

Got zilch here sorry :O ooh apart from some nice std r32 ones :D

34kw and [email protected] fat gains there...certainly nothing to sneeze at...thanks for sharing.

Genuinely interested to know nismoid what your thoughts are on this as it seems to fly in the face of the DOZENS of cars you know of that returned the same results regardless of dumps...

It does however seem to confirm your peak power claim but contradicts your seat of the pants dyno claims in terms of response...would like to see the results after half a dozen full power runs, not just one...im sure the difference would continue to increase with the extra heat and combustion temps generated by the restrictive factory dumps...

greddy kit - $865 (before shipping i know)

it is a fair bit, but most people are happy to spend more than that, in some cases a LOT more on what comes behind the cat, isnt whats infront of it just as important ?

...dont even start on how many people just ignore the cat altogether haha

Nice post edit.

At this stage it's good information. Perhaps i have R33 dumps (they are not the same as R32). Hence my question about other-than-R32 items.

As there was no difference with my car at all, as we've been over already. I never said it was just peak power.

Post edit? Quote me next time then if it bugs you that much, I only added, didnt remove anything....

'At this stage its good information'....Lol....no sh1t hey? Better than all the hearsay youve posted?...

Seriously, have you ever admitted youre wrong in your entire life? You must be an only child....lol.

Heres what you said...you said the power was identical before and after suggesting 'peak power' no mention of mid range response until...you went on to say you know the car very well and you could FEEL NO DIFFERENCE in ramp up or response.....

Nothing was changed, just the dumps.

No graphs of the before, i already knew what power it was making and it was identical to the after.

I know the car very well and i could feel there was no difference in boost ramp up/response.

As for your dump pipes, werent you going to go down to your mate at NISSAN and get me the magical part numbers or something? Didnt you order them yourself?

Seems all of a sudden youre backpedaling....'maybe mine are 33 dumps'.....?

Edited by NSNPWR

Thanks for sharing that Trent.

That confirms what I saw on street testing. I switched from the Mine's dump and extension pipes to the same Trust/Greddy kit and saw boost came on earlier by around ~300rpms.

If you think about it, it doesn't seem logical given that the gates are closed during most of low-mid range but I am sure there is a bit more physic behind the exhaust flow in the smaller Greddy's main dumps than the Mine's dumps.

Indeed it's good information. That is what this forum is about, sharing what people have found and often results from one do not agree with another. That is what a knowledge base is - that is the forums.

I was down at workshop looking at the overlay on the screen, heresay where exactly? You are assuming it is because you don't believe me, your problem and not mine unfortunately.

Dyno's are the be all & end all... Street felt equally as good and boost came on the same are previous (same as what the results showed)

So your quoted post of my words makes no reference to peak power... Thanks for helping clarify your own incorrect conclusions.

As for the "freak" dumps, I'm still ask him for you, seeing as though you are so adamant they must exist.

I'm not backpeddaling at all. If you look over my posts over the last 6 months I've said on a number of occasions they could be either R32/R33.

You've even posted in some of those threads... so going and pretending you are not aware of it. You are well aware of what I've posted in the past.

Two incorrect conclusions in this thread, i think two in the other, must be some sorta record breaking going on.

Thankyou for educating me on the ways of the forumz all seeing all hearing all typing....

So as above, you were there for each and every single one of these DOZENS of runs or have viewed them ALL with your own eyes? Part of a research project was it? Just incase at some point down the track you entered into an internet discussion on the very topic...lol.

Well, please feel free to explain what you meant by making the same power? Please clarify.

...it was sarcasm regarding the dumps...and no, I have never read you say they could be 32 or 33 dumps, have only been on the forum 'posting' a few months, didnt take long to realise what a know it all you are, remember the fuel economy thread? :)

    • LS is a good motor, but it hurts my soul when I see it in a RB. Guess it fixes the oiling issues lol.
    • I'm confused. Does this qualify as "Gregging" or are you somehow avoiding the Gregging?
    • More assembly going on, with all sorts of "bolt right on bro" scenarios going on here. Smartly, PTV clearance was checked. And I say smartly because it turns out that the intake was 0.009" from piston meeting valve. This is 0.23mm. This is very not okay. A fast meeting was facilitated between engine builder in Australia and engine builder in the USA which was actually incredibly helpful and constructive actually, various ideas thrown around to get around this issue including: 1) Retard the cam timing which would have brought the exhaust valve closer to meeting piston (it was 0.065") which was uncomfortably close to begin with, and change the cam profile making it 'laggier' 2) Much larger head gaskets which would reduce compression, but half the point of this was to increase compression. 3) New set of pistons ($$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$) 4) All of the above 5) Get ghetto The concept is you get sticky sandpaper and stick it back to a valve, slightly larger than the valve you/I'm using, like say from a LS3/rectangle port head. You now have a very super advanced flycutting tool to modify your pistons in your block. Then you install it in your head, and attach the other end of the head to a drill. Then you just replicate your valve smashing into a piston with your spinning drill.   This is the result. Repeat many times. It is strongly recommended you have some kind of fixed stop when doing this for extremely obvious reasons because if you press too hard then you're well into apocalyptic repercussion land. The minimum clearance on the intake valve is now 0.075" this is still in the "Too close to be really comfortable" and into "It should be fine" land. Supposedly in the real world the clearances will be slightly bigger. Guess this is what happens when people push envelopes for N/A engines instead of adding boost! Time to move onto the new, upgraded, higher ratio roller rockers from Yellaterra, all tapped and threaded with a stronger bolt for better stability. Very nice. Lets see how they fit. For f**ks sake. Time to bring the grinder out for these aftermarket, machined and CNC'd heads. Looks like the new, beefier rocker from YellaTerra has gone from Bolt on part to "Bolt on part". Well, lets see how this bolt on crank scraper and windage tray goes then, shall we? There actually is more clearance than they specify for this thing, but seeing it all move as you check it is terrifying when you see it all so very very very very nearly hit things. But after all, this is what the item is designed to do after all and actually did bolt on perfectly and have enough clearance to everything and some very clear and direct instructions. So +1 to Improved Racing I suppose. As above with the windage tray on. Photo of breaker bar wonkiness for added lols. Next up: Oil pump/front cover/water pump/sump and then it's time to actually install the heads, pushrods, head bolts, valve cover gaskets and such is all there and ready to go. (except the oil pump bolts which were previously longer for more clearance with the previously perfectly installed double row timing chain). There's definitely a sense that someone other than us has been here before and done everything perfectly, or at least considered it and came up with working solutions. Perhaps the previous cam was 6deg advanced to avoid PTV issues with the milled stock heads? In any case when I attempt to sell this stuff the buyers are going to be very directly informed.
    • my catch can is pretty easy to empty but it overflows due to the blowby/crank case pressure etc. max I have drained is ~600ml even with a ~2.3L capacity. So it is not just about having to drain it out its the mess it makes down the firewall and under the car and rear passenger tyre from the overflow oil being blasted by screamer + air in general. Ending up on the ground cleaning the oil up and having oil on your arms when everyone else can chill and watch the other sessions gets old fast
    • Yeah - the secret learned a long time ago is that the RB likes to belch oil out the covers, and/or starve the pump because it drowns the head in oil, because the upflow of crankcase gases from piston blowby comes up through the oil drain holes in the block and prevents the oil from flowing back down. The external vents from sump are about creating an alternative path/much more XS area for gas flow to decrease the gas velocity up through the oil drains and allow the oil to get back down. So, it's not about pressure at all. It is about flows - gas up and oil down - or when it's not working, gas up and oil not going where it is supposed to after it arrives at the top, except out through the cam cover vents. And regardless of whether the catch can is vented to air or vented to the turbo inlet, it must still be vented because a sealed system would blow out the crank seals, or something equally bad.
