hi there people as the title sort of says, i am gunna take up drifting and want to do it right,

so im doing the whole battery isolater, fire suppresion and such, question i have for you all is what material do i use,

i know mild steel would be good, which is what i am using but should i use pipe or tube, and what size does it have to be, does it need to be engineered.

i can get the cage welded properly and done to specs, does anyone know of any places in south australia were i can get it done, what other things need to be put in to make it all legal.

cheers.. michael P.S the car is a 1986 fc series 4 rx7 turbo with a 13b rew engine converted back to single, makes alright power gunna up the boost to 12 or 15 which should see 250kw at the treads. this should be enough for a car thats gutted and stuff.

Have a read of schedule J of the CAMS manual first it will answer a lot.

Once you are across that post up more questions and I'm sure we can help

One thing I strongly recommend - don go with a cage that does not meet CAMS rules. Cages are difficult or impossible to change which means you would not be able to do cams events ever with that car.

There are a fair few places around that do CAMS cages, they can either do a Drive in drive out service, or just supply material with the main hoop and legs bent and the reciepts you will need to show the pipe is the correct spec.

If your out north try walker chassis - http://www.walkerchassis.com.au/

down south try Craig William - http://www.ultraracecars.com.au/

You can do it yourself, but it takes a bit of skill and the right tools - if its welded the welds have to be up to spec and have to completely surround all joints, if you get the sequence wrong you can stuff it up and not be able to finish it without ripping the whole roof off.

I have seen more than a couple DIY cages that have had to be cut out and fully replaced as they were dangerous in the way they were constructed or they couldnt get access to finish off welds.

    • Hey, like MBS206 mentioned; I dropped off my short block and rotating assembly Monday. With a quick verification, he believes he can clear it up with just a hone and new rings but he will confirm once the rotating assembly is out. If I were you, I would either go stroker or just replace the block if it does need to be bored over to next size. Block is cheaper then forged pistons.
    • live in the UK, and London has introduced a Low Emission Zone (LEZ) that requires individuals to pay £13 if their car doesn’t meet the required emissions standards.   The standard specifies that NOx emissions must be less than 0.08 g/km (i.e., the vehicle must meet Euro 4 standards or better, which generally results in NOx levels of around 0.08 grams per kilometer).   I reached out to Nissan UK, and they advised me to contact Nissan Japan directly. Does anyone have contact details for Nissan Japan or any certifications of conformity that show the emission details or NOx levels for the RB25DET engine?   Any guidance would be greatly appreciated.
    • these guys recommended to me and supplied custom 4 inch mufflers, couldn't be happier. They will spec a muffler to your preferred level of sound and know RB's well.  https://spmufflers.com.au/
    • Yeah this used to happen to me every year and a quick call would at least raise the agreed value back up / reduce the premium, but usually both.    That said for the first time on the renewal this year our agreed values went up or stayed the same over the fleet and the premium came down so that was a nice surprise.
    • I don't even go that hard core. I just say "how do you expect me to stay, when you increase my premium, and reduce the value of the car?"   Then play a game of shut the f**k up. Most of the time it's a computer that did the adjustment, and the people will happily change it around for you.
