Hey,

I have an R33 GTS25 (1994) and I am trying to draw the best plan to get more power, even though it still has a little grunt :-). I am too attached to my car so buying a gtst is not an option. My current mods are some extractors, pod filter and a conversion to manual with an RB30 box. I have been encouraged to get a bolt on turbo but I have since been reading about NOS. The car won't be used for racing and power will not be used all the time which would suit NOS I would imagine...a bit of punch here or there would be awesome fun!

Is there anyone here who has used NOS with an N/A Skyline? If so what bits would I need to upgrade to hold a 50-75hp shot or even a 100hp? How much can it take?

They say 6psi from a turbo is approximately 60hp, would then 75-100hp of NOS be too much for the N/A?

I figured that 2mins or so of NOS at WOT is a long time so I am not worried about the limitations there. I actually wondered if it would be cheaper on fuel than a turbo because a turbo is running most of the time and NOS isn't.

There aren't many NOS cars around that I know of, so NOSing it is a little different :D

So is NOS a bad idea or is the turbo the way to go?

Also, I am from NZ. Does anyone know what the laws are regarding NOS in NZ? Is it legal?

Oh and one last thing, how dangerous is it in a crash to have a pressurised 10pound bottle of NOS sitting in your car?...boom?

you watch too many movies .

1 nitrous DOES NOT BURN . it is an oxide and it only increases power by letting you burn more fuel

2 its illegal in NZ .

you should de+t it . using standard parts and a full dyno tune

Ya, though more power=more pressure.

n2o is a waste of time in anything but a drag car.

and unless you spend a few thousand on a good ECU and tuning than you will get the shits about having to run around with the ign timing retarded by 5-10 degs just so you can run the Gas once a month.

furthermore dont go to a workshop saying you want nos, 2 of the big ones, and that you need it by tonight.

because if you want it, it is possible, however at what price? you'll no doubt be taken for a ride!!

cheap and simple answer? go gtst

expensive and complex answer? turbo it

1. If you are serious about nitrous, speak to people that have experience with it as most people on here have no clue other than what Fast and Furious showed.

2. Yes it is dangerous to have a high pressure bottle (roughly 1000psi) in your car. No nitrous doesn't "burn" but yes a nitrous bottle can explode when exposed to high heat causing the pressure inside the bottle to skyrocket in a small amount of time.

For your situation even though, even though I know you said you don't want to sell it, is to just buy a GTST.

other things to take into consideration before ruling out the GTSt option.

1: they have bigger brakes as standard

2: they have a LSD standard

3: they have a stronger gearbox

4: they have a turbo all ready there just waiting for mods to be added

5: not sure about over in NZ, but here they are starting to go for as much, if not more than their turbo versions, meaning you could sell your car and get yourself a turbo version and then spend the money you were going to spend on doing up your non turbo (and maybe a touch more) and end up with something putting out around 250kw.

only downside to going turbo is that you will use more fuel, but how much more is soley determined by your right foot. if you drive it hard it will drink fuel like anything, but if you drive it sensible it won't be too bad. the same goes for a NA, but a turbo will drink it even more, especially once you wind the boost up.

I did not realise that a lot could still be done to it. Unless I am blind, it looks like that guy is hammering out that power on the original high compression pistons...impressive.

I also want to work on it myself and fiddle around with it, just buying a fast car is not as much fun, better to make it fast :ermm:.

Does anyone know how much hp my RB30 box would handle? I hear they are pretty strong.

A point I don't really understand is psi boost. Some say RB25DE will only take 6-7psi comfortably which equates to 50-60 hp. Does that mean the car is limited full stop to 250hp or so?

Or can mods such as a decent intercooler etc increase power and yet not damage the engine? I understand that intercoolers cool the air going into the engine therefore making the oxygen more dense...would that mean psi/pressure is increased on top of the 6-7psi?

I've been running 10-12 daily without probs.. but lately I've been running 7PSI due to increased travelling and ridiculously priced BP Ultimate :ermm:

To answer your question, intercoolers will have to some to degree a pressure drop. I'm using a cheap intercooler, I'm getting around 2PSI pressure drop across the intercooler (according to my mechanic).

Cooler are is more dense meaning there is more air in a smaller space. Air+fuel+Spark = Power. More air = more power. With a DE+t the FMIC isn't so much about making more power, but keeping the air as cool as possible so as to reduce Intake air temperature so that excess heat in the combustion chamber is reduced preventing engine damage and melting pistons. Use a FMIC, enclose that pod filter (cold air feed will help also), and ACL Heatshield over the exhaust manifold and turbo helps a LOT with keeping heat out of otherwise too-hot-to-touch intake pipe to the throttle body.

The key to a good DE+t set up is:

A good tune to stave of engine knock and detonation - Make sure your tuner knows what he's doing to get the best of both worlds. Advancing timing will make more power and kill the engine quickly. Retarding timing will make less power, more reliably. Retarding timing too much can retain excessive heat in the combustion chamber which can also damage the engine.

Cooling - Particularly on R34 NEO's DE+t's run hotter. An oil cooler is a must on a DE NEO! After I had my stepper motor gauges hooked up I was shocked at how high the oil temps were getting! In summer doing motorway driving 110c was not uncommon! Now with the oil cooler I've dropped it 10-20c, and now with winter coming close and the "QLD" weather getting a bit cooler.. 80-90c is what I'm getting daily.

Use a good quality oil suited for your engine set up. My mechanic recommends and uses Castrol Edge Sport 10W60 in my car. I'm looking to try a different oil though on my next service as I'm going to take it to ERD and I'll see how it goes with the royal purple.

Lastly, the car isn't going to survive on stock internals if it's flogged everywhere day in day out.. but I think that's obvious :bunny:

I ran a a 206 hdi on noz was good laugh surprised a few people at the lights plus it was easy to install and not really that expensive to be honest

I was running 75 shot on progressive controllers this was around 7 years ago and yes more then a few people told me i was stupid but i did it just to prove them wrong really.

    • Can you log IAT? Whilst WTA coolers have their place, doing any sort of sustained run is not one of them There are fixes that slow down the heat soak, like ice boxes, which don't last that long, and interchillers, which are fairly expensive, up grades to the WTA cooling radiator, which may require a bigger pump, and upgrades to the reservoir size,  and upgrades to the cooling fans, but, it all still heat soaks, and takes ages to come down in hot weather  For a turbo, that isn't locked into WTA like my PD blower is, can you not possibly swap to a nice air to air intercooler????, it would be better for sustained runs then, and have alot less things that could go wrong in my opinion 
    • So, the other thing I've sorted is a baseline dyno run up at Unigroup's new location. The auto trans was a little unco-operative by both shifting down when the throttle was floored on the dyno (so Mark had to ramp it up more slowly than in a manual) and also by shifting up at 6,000 even in sports mode instead of the indicated redline of 7,000 Still, on a hot day it made 240rwkw at 16psi which seems about right for 300kw (400hp) through an auto at the wheels.  The shape of the curve is not quite right because it was not full throttle to about 4,500 to stop it kicking down, but until I can get a tune on the auto trans control this was the best we could do.....full boost will be well below 5,000 once that is sorted, I'll get some data logs when I can to confirm For comparison, the R32 made 255 at 12psi (at 4,500) on the same dyno with tune, n1 turbos, cam gears, big exhaust but otherwise all standard so the v37 is likely a little better out of the box. One thing that is very clear is that the standard water to air intercoolers are not up to sustained use at full throttle in warm ambient temps. After about 5 runs (so only a few minutes full throttle), it was pulling boost and timing and dropping 10-15% power. Unfortunately I didn't get that printout and the Unigroup guys are away at the moment, will try and get hold of it on their return. So, looks like a healthy engine to start modifying and the only real area of concern is the w2a heat exchangers which the aftermarket has plenty of solutions for    
    • I maintain it actually looked really nice in person. So much so that I thought "No, this is illegal" but there it was, clear as day. I think we can easily call the wing and wheels/height to be transformative. Not saying it's better than the GR Whatever, or the 86, or the WRX STI or anything of that sort (the internet says it all bolts up so you can buy best of all worlds?) but it's still at least a thing and not nearly AS bad as people say.

    • I leant out the window recently and took a picture of this new WRX. It looked real damn fine in person. It's faster around a track (stock) than a (stock) GR Yaris. It's much more practical despite being heavier. It's significantly cheaper. This gen tunes really well, much better than others. .... I think they're probably a lot better than people expect.
