hey as the title says i just want to know how hard it is to remove the rails, is the bolts on the rail it self or do i have to remove the roof lining and do it that way cos i have found a place that will fabricate the rails for 50 bucks each and now i just want to know if its gonna cost me more then i have planned.

Thanks

If you're looking at removing the roof rails, and making the roof smooth, then wait for a couple of weeks: we have contracted a body shop to mould a kit for us, and the first batch is due to be delivered in the next week or 2.

Basically, I bought a set of rail replacement panels from Japan, but was not happy with the fit, so the shop we are dealing with have chopped them, moulded parts from the original rails etc... They have their own Stagea to test on, so we are expecting a very impressive result.

The workshop making them is based in Sydney, so it won't soct too much in freight.

Stand by for pics of the fitted product as soon as I get them...

As I recall this was a bit of a debacle; went on for ever...

i'm amazed that it can be so hard.

i feel for the people involved who obviously got mucjed around by a supplier who over-promised and under-deliverd, but really - they're two long flat bits with a slight curve at the end. a metal fabricator should be able to knock some out in a day.

We ended getting 4 sets made. Only took 13 months, we were promised 6-8 weeks.

$600 a set and they dont fit. I have 2 pairs standingg up in the corner of the garage.

I think they need a good days work to get them flat and sitting right before painting.

I have not had time to do it, maybe soon

Not that easy welding up the factory ones. they are very thin s/steel with a plastic/rubber coating. that would have to be removed to weld them which would stuff them up as the last 50mm each end is plastic not metal.

Hmmmm. Il have to see if anyone has a spare set and have a look at the options. I think a tig might get away with it but as you said the plastic coating will probably have to be removed first. But mine is already peeling and I need to take the rails out to re paint my roof anyway.

Can someone post up a pic of the roof with the rails removed? I am planning to remove mine at some point and would like to see the nature of the problem - I am imagining four holes of some sort in the roof and was planning to just weld steel into the spaces but people are suggesting it is somehow more complicated??!

ive got an idea on the go. if it works out i'll share.

well my idea worked out, but its a huge job! something only a highly experienced professional should attempt! i wouldnt recommend it unless ur doing a complete teardown and respray.

hopefully it will look good once the paints done.
