wow ive lost 5 mintues of my life reading some of these posts.

So you come to a Skyline forum and ask questions about Honda power?

They are reliable, they are cheap, they are a tight ass way to get ok track times, parts are cheap.

They are boring to drive, they sound ugly, they are Front wheel drive, Decent around corners but once those front tyres slip your next stop is a pole.

There is a reason they are one of australias most popular "family" cars, a civic gets compared to a carolla, need i say more?

If you want fun with your car do not get a honda, if your on a budget then you may not have a choice...

Also forgot to mention i'll forever associate you as Hektor in fast and the furious with his bloody spoon engines.

In summary they are decent cars, but you are on the wrong forum

the civic, or corolla for that matter, are not even close to being australias most popular family car. that is owned by ford and holden. the civic and corolla may be two of australias favourite small cars, but certainly not favourite cars. the honda accord is a family car, not a civic. a skyline is a family car also.

and if you are buying a car for the fun of driving it, i wouldn't get a skyline either. i'd go for the honda over a skyline, for the simple fact that how fast something gets to 100kmh doesn't determine how much fun it is. that just makes me think of that line from tokyo drift "wow, you can read the brochure".

i've owned a turbo 33 and a 180sx and the 180 was more fun than the 33, despite being about 100hp down on power, yet neither were the most fun car i have driven when it come to shits and giggles type of driving. sure the turbo imports can put a smile on your dial if you floor it, but they also can scare you. the most fun i've had driving around town at full noise was in the least powerful car i have owned. it was a 1.3L ford festiva that was lowered with big wheels (15", which are big on a festiva). this was the sort of car that you could drive as hard as you want and barely break the speed limit or attract attention from the cops. doing the speed limit round corners felt fast. everytime you took off from a set of lights it was a drag race to 60, even if it was some old granny in their new camry next to you. sure it wasn't that great as a car since it had no power, but as far as driving like a dick, you could do it and not break the speed limit, and not get anywhere near fast enough to get you into a situation where you run out of talent and end up in a tree. in something like the skyline or the 180 you were up to the speed limit in a few seconds, and a few seconds later you were approaching twice the speed limit and having to get hard on the brakes because you were going too fast to take the corner or you were going to run up the back of the car in front. so you get a few seconds of fun and then it was over until you next had to accelerate up to the speed limit.

take out rental and company vehicles and taxis and the sales of commos and falcons arn't that high at all, corolla and civics win then.

Commos and falcons would be australias favourite cars if they could go for 3 years without overheating on a hot day...

And if i was buying a car purely for the fun of driving it i'd get an elise

even my old 4age 20v with work done to it (1.6 vvt) i was sorta keeping up with type r's.. (0-100 a stock type r was only pulling 3-4 car lengths)

3-4 car lengths from 0-100 is a f**king massive lead! LOL! Its only two gears.

But dont start the 20v vs VTEC. Its just not worth it. 20v = rubbish. Needs a fair bit of modding to even match up to a stock B16a. Let alone a B16b and B18c

JDM DC2R has 14X oddkw and weighs 1020kg, 1058kg with the optional A/C, ABS and Airbag. I know cause I had one!

what do you class as mildly modded?

exhaust, fmic and some boost? if so. i will be more than happy to bring a camera along with me next time to prove to you.

DC2 Type R has what 200hp stock and weights around the 1200kg region

R33 normally have anywhere between 200-300hp mildly modded and weight 1450kg?

Type r runs a close ratio gear box too so they have better acceleration.

what this video skip to 7min

the DC2 R v's s14a (both stock).

guess who wins?

I'm not saying they are super quick but can hold their own, with the right bolt on mods

lol hardly, 10-15 meters against a type r isnt all that bad, probably should've been more specific but it wasn't as if the type r was pulling away with ease, it slowly kept creeping away..

i've had the argument about vtec and 20valves a million times, i agree b16a motor is sweet.. but i wouldnt say 20valves are rubbish

3 to 4 car lengths at the drags will be a fair bit of time

EDIT: just did a quick calculation as i couldn't remember the figures off the top of my head, but at 100kmh you are doing 27m a second. so if at 100kmh you are that far behind and they are still slowly pulling away, you are looking at close to a full second slower over the 1/4 mile, which when put like that is a fair bit of time. a lot of people don't think of that when they say "the other car had only pulled away by a few car lengths at 100kmh"

exactly what i was about to say, 0-100 is no way to compare the two, put them in a 1/4 mile race and you'll watch the R's tail lights fade into the distance (this coming from a ex 20v blacktop owner, don't get me wrong, their a bulletproof engine, but be realistic, your comparing apples and oranges :)

on another note:

vtec_motiv.jpg

^^ yeah no doubt it will beat a 20v over a quartermile.. i just dont think 1 - 1.5 seconds over a quarter mile isn't that bad for a car (stock ae101 20 valve) which has 30-40hp less than stock dc2 integra .2L less engine displacement + the ae101 corolla weighs 100kg's more.

anyway, gone a bit off topic :D

cant be stuffed reading the 6 pages.

My friend just bought a DC2 Type R

After I got over the "vtec kicked in yo" jokes it is quite a nice car.

Suspension is quite firm for a standard car. Feels real similar to my r32 fitted out with whiteline swaybars and bilsteins.

Has a factory oil cooler and will only engage vtec once everything is warmed up and this takes a while. Once vtec kicks in (yo') you definitely hear/feel the difference in acceleration.

They are 130kw/tonne which is more than a r32 gtst (125kw/tonne) and already have all suspension ready for track from factory.

A nice chuckable car from the factory but there are too many dreamers out there selling them for $15k+.

You dont get a DC2R for drags so stop having pissing contests about 1/4. The real fun is through corners and track

This has been my point exactly from the start ,you dont get one for drags ,unless you really trying to prove a honda point or be different, same goes for track.....but if you want something fun to go to work or the milk bar in....They're perfect

I wouldnt assume so quickly that they have nothing to prove on track. They have been known to beat s15's around tracks and will leave a lot of cars through twisty tracks

Have driven a dc5 but not a dc2. Basically I reckon its the handling thats pretty decent. The chassis design for the DC5 and FD2R is pretty good. Can take corners pretty well. K20A engine is nothing to boast about though. Other than that....

Its only a water oil cooler between the block and oil filter. Thought Skylines had them too?

Yeah its true, but usually only the dedicated honda fans make it happen...

Its easy to be a skyline owner they make some of the faster cars around,

but you have to commend honda drivers for trying REALLY hard.... :D

and sometimes that makes the win so much sweeter...

I wouldn't be so sure about that............

Lol. Shame they dont show trap speeds etc. The gap at 200m was .4 and the gap at 400m was .1, clearly it was catching up.

Those videos hardly do justice for what its really like though. Probly helps that that was a BZR too.. 6speed acceleration.

Well yeah , But you can hardly say a B16 is gonna cream a 20 valve. I believe the B16 does make more power but maybe not overall average power ( idle - redline ) .4 secs to 200 mtrs is what you would expect from a street type of encounter, which shows there isnt a lot in it. Both great power plants for a 1.6 litre engine

You grossly overstate the unreliability of Commodores and Falcons. They make up a large proportion of cars on the road so of course a lot of them are going to be at the side of the road. The only reason theyre there in the first place is because morons dont maintain them properly and they fall apart just like any other car. I have a VP Commo with over a third of a million kms on it and its still going strong *touch wood* still its original engine and auto.
