On the topic of car alarms (sorry to hijack the thread) but are they really worth installing? I've got an imobiliser in my car and I think that's enough. A car alarm's just gonna make noise if somebody tries to steal the car, but nobody's gonna check on it. I see car alarms going off all the time in the city and nobody checks the damn things.

An alarm is useful. Especially if you are within earshot yourself. Paging alarms are also useful. Far from foolproof but better than nothing.

I have always checked alarms if they are not too far out of my way. I have yet to see one going off that was caused by someone breaking into the car but I still check anyway. I suspect the reason why everyone ignores alarms is because no one ever sees anyone breaking into a car.

Are there any 'best practices' that should be followed when having your alarm installed?
