James - I don't mind Rohan's LM, but the fact is that even though it's a limited edition and only 98 were produced, they won't appreciate at all.

Basically, what I'm saying is that it doesn't matter if it's an LM edition or a V-Spec, it's all about the condition. If I were to find a R33 GTR with low low km's and in dead stock IMMACULATE condition I'd pay up to $31-$32K knowing that I am buying a car that won't screw me over.

From what I know about this midnight purple GTR, it's clean, straight and (no offence to anyone young on here) hasn't had any young owners. The current owner is 55 years old. I'm sure you can see my point.

But, I will continue to look around for an R33 GTR (pref a V-Spec) that suits what I want.

No guarantees on a clean stock car not screwing you over... James' old R33 GTR is currently having HUGE problems, very expensive repairs needed.

I'm not sure if you are aware, but the reliability of a car comes down to how you drive it. I bet the youg kid that brought your R33 GTR James, thrashed the living shit out of it hence it has problems now.

If you find a performance car that has had little to no modifications and has had regular servicing, and has experienced a reasonable life + owner then you should be right.

Yes there is the chance that it could be a lemon, but I'd rather take my chances buying from an older owner.

According to the mechanic rebuilding it (very renowned mechanic, definitely knows his stuff), the damage is in no way down to the way it was driven. Was simply a mechanical failure.

^^Totally agree. Remember that when things go wrong on a GTR (32,33 or 34) they are go in multiples of $1000. If you have the money to maintain and repair it then go for it. If you need it checked over go to XSpeed as they are the experts with these things. No one else in Perth comes close.

Yes i understand that mechanical components on these vehicles do fail, however from a sensibility point of view, things like oil pumps and water pumps should be replaced by the new owners as soon as they acquire the vehicle.

I don't care if the seller tells me they have replaced the timing belt and water pump 5000kms ago, for my own piece of mind, I'd do it again as I am aware it is expensive to fix these cars.

By that reasoning, you should also replace all gaskets, hoses, seals, brake master cylinder, brake booster, gearbox synchros, etc... all of these things are known to go and can cause very expensive problems.

My point is you can't say a stock standard car will be more reliable than a modified car

Replace oil pump when you buy a car?? lolwut.

It's generally an engine out job unless you have appropriate tools and very small hands, but either way, it's way more labour intensive than a timing belt/water pump.

As already observed by others, you need to take the engine out on a GTR to replace the oil pump. Nice little expensive job, that one. In general, if the seller has the receipts for the work done and it is done by a reputable garage, then I would be happy to accept that - rather than spend several thousand dollars re-doing it all!

If you need it checked over go to XSpeed as they are the experts with these things. No one else in Perth comes close.

Jonn, by all means recommend a workshop with whom you have enjoyed good outcomes, but don't have a general swipe at all others. All workshops have their pros and cons. The more popular they are, the more diverse the opinions. I can assure you that Xspeed enjoy both, same as anywhere else.

The seller of the R34 GTR did not mkae up the story about the interstate buyer - so that GTR is now sold. Too bad I say.

I think a 33GTR would be a better option for me anyway.

Jonn - the reason I will use my mechanice is because my brothers have known him for 10+years and I've know him for 3+years, I trust him, and from the presentation of his workshop and the way he treats his customer's & their cars, I know he won't screw me around when we inspect it or service it.

Canute - the reason I say I would want to replace the oil pump is for peace of mind. I have known a few new owner's of R33 GTR's who have had the oil pumps fail shortly after purchasing. Maybe I'm just getting paranoid, maybe not. Either way, I don't want any major problems with whichever GTR i buy.

TBH dude, I would put the money you would spend on a new oil pump towards the rebuild fund and just cross the busted oil pump bridge when you get to it. Replacing an oil pump isn't cheap if you have to get someone else to do it, better off to save for the (inevitable) rebuild.

Have you looked at the BSB one at 45k? (or is it out of your price range?)

Not a VspecII but still possibly a Vspec?

I remember reading something about the rear diffuser being stolen or something...

Maybe be dodge, but its BSB :D

Yeah I know it may not be a cheap exercise, but yes you do have a very valid point.

How reliable are the R33 RB26's? I mean say it has a few resonable mods and is either running stock boost or slightly more than factory? And assuming you give it some curry every now and then....

    • I suppose that's true. Barring almost any situation, I'll never sell so what the market does is kind of irrelevant to me. It's possible I'd make most of my money back. It was certainly a good moment and just makes the ties to the car that much stronger.     • No worries, everything worked out in the end. I just wanted to make the point that it doesn't matter where it comes from (I.E Australia), it can be broken or improperly built. I would still purchase from these companies in the future. B2R - Not certain how that finished, this was on a car I wired a few things and street tuned. I know the owner ended up shipping the motor back to Australia for investigation. Hopefully some of it is covered under warranty.  Turbosmart - I always pressure test everything that goes on my car. It's a habit from my career in oil and gas. I run two 40mm's and both had major leaks from the actuator to exhaust portion through the shaft. I returned both, they shipped me back two and one was leaking and the other had a 38mm top (40mm gate with 38mm actuator cap, no idea how that happens). Eventually after a lot of back and forth I found myself with two non-leaking gates. I believe this happens a lot more then people would like to believe but you would never know if you don't pressure test them prior to installation. Crank Motorsport - Issued a full refund and let me keep the seat rails. I turned them into scrap metal for other projects. GKTech - Shipped me out a replacement and asked that I modify it as per my idea and that they would do the same for a future revision. ATP - Can just needed a large shim to bolt up properly.  Haltech - They started an actual proper Beta channel for firmware's a few months back and stopped using the general public for testing. I'm now much happier.  Speedtek - f**k Speedtek. I would love to watch them burn.     
    • I've got a Turbosmart wastegate, ATP catch can, many GK Tech parts and Haltech everything. Everything's been perfect, sorry to hear your experience wasn't the same
