I never knew loud exhausts were directly related to deaths on the roads! Thanks VicPol for making that connection, never knew i was killing people ~_~

Have seen a bunch of vicroads cars (with purple lights) pulling over cars on the eastern freeway this week. Probably part of the operation

Not sure I can make it clearer.. If you spend a substantial amount of time near something noisy you will lose hearing. If you drive your car a lot and it makes more than 85db of noise inside the cabin you will be losing your hearing. In work places companies _have_ been prosecuted large ($100000 plus fines) for putting employees in situations where they exceed noise thresholds.

Personally can't stand going for a drive in someones car that drones constantly. Obviously a track car is different.

you are missing the point. yes driving an eccessively loud car is detrimental to your health, but thats the drivers choice. its also his choice to smoke if he so wishes. i dont see a crackdown on smokers coming anytime soon. in addition its not drivers of loud vehicles that have lodged complaints against themselves. its supposedly "joe public".

which brings us to the point that the exposure that these idiots have to a loud vehicle driving past is negligible. its not like we lock them in a room with a rotary on a dyno. work place safety is completely irrelevant

plus its important to note when u driving down the free way at 2,800 rpm i'm sure that it is no where near 90db! it only when u are hitting the redline does the sound hit 90db.

Db scale is expoential meaning that from 88, the 2 db required to get 90 would be 100% louder

this is almost border line harassment!

Had a bit of a chuckle reading the article in the paper this morning:

"Sponsored by the deaf society of australia"

Ahhhhh The irony.

Got an image of a deaf person in my head saying "tooooo loud"

No offence if you are deaf

LOL, I'm deaf - yet my car isn't that loud... for my liking.

I wonder if I said I'm deaf and the exhaust isn't destroying my hearing (not that I have one anyway) would I be let off?

I don't know why the deaf society support this bullcrap, once again I own a GT-R and I'm essentially a criminal just cos I have one of these rackety thing on wheels according to the media/people that have been brainwashed by the bullshit artists (ACA/TT).

How much is the fine for having loud cars?

^ At least you can play the "i didn't know" card

Fine is dependant... sometimes if you get caught @ a roadside testing station people have been given fines of i think around $500

That said, if you just get the usual letter in the mail there is no fine as there is no proof - just reported on suspicion.

Hrmmmm this has me thinking... In motorcycle exhausts we have baffles that can be removed, when installed they deaden the sound a few dB. Do car exhausts have anything a like to this? Could be an idea when situations like this come along. Wouldn't be hard either.

Supertrapp exhausts, in the ealry 90s lots of rotaries were using them trying to quiten down all the ported rotors before turbos became all the rage.

What they do care about, and what everyone cares about is when you go to get your mail in your quiet street and a bloke is giving 2nd gear limiter a nudge out of corners and down your street. Wide open throttle usually means noise....so its farking stoopid that they are going after the by product and not the cause...driving with a heavy foot!

I believe that it shouldnt be a problem if people dont use it or hear it....means you can have your fun modding the car, drive sensibly on teh road...and when you rock up to your CAMS event you can give it HELL!

So glad my car is parked up and not being driven 500kms a week, it would only be a matter of time until i had issues, for whatever reason was deemed to be a hazard on the day

this is actually a joke

theres junkies on the street stabbing people to get there next hit....

wtf is wrong with this government

get your priorities straight and catch some real crooks.

700 people in 3 days

with 28 days to clear an epa

every exhaust place is gonna be booked absaloutlly full and people wont get it done within 28 days

then comes the 500 dollar fine

pretty smart by the boys in blue

if they put that much thought into catching real criminals or into the PUBLIC HEALTH SYSTEM im sure wed have a perfect world

Not sure which state you've been living in, but as recently as yesterday I heard talk of banning smoking out doors. How is this not 'a crackdown'?

I have been in cars that are without question.. louder than 85dB at 2500rpm inside the cabin. Further more these cars still retained all the factory sound deadening. Do the maths. Do you realise how not loud 85dB is?

Now if they are just targeting anything that 'looks' loud then i'm all for getting angry on top of my soap box and abusing the powers that be for money grabbing. But ... no one in this thread has even done that? If they are taking all those f-ing annoying harleys that prevent you from having a conversation as they pass to task.. Hey, i'm not complaining. Last time I tested my car was 82dB at 2500rpm and made 245 rwkw. Good enough for me.

I should also point out.. I work as an O H + S consultant. I deal with stupid legislation on a daily basis.

smoking outdoors is fine, its just smoking in enclosed places that get me, like in sheltered carparks with low ceilings and minimal ventilation...

But think about it, if everyone EPA-ed gets a fine of about 500 dollars, thats 3.5million in revenue!
