Hi

Ive been on these forums for some time trying to learn more about the RB26 GTRs. Question is, can a midly tuned R34 GTR compete against the following modern day cars- FG F6, e90 M3, c63 AMG, Audi S4 ? I have driven all except for the C63, and the bang for the buck was the F6. The Audi on the road was qouted to be 145K, and the M3 was just over 175K. The F6 was 80K with all options.

Can a mildly tuned R34 compete in outright acceleration, but very important comfort? Is the R26 and other drivetrain components getting too old, requiring high maintenance costs to keep it running?

I have always liked the design, and the price of them is well within my budget. I just would like to learn from other owners if maintenance/ harsh ride, makes them a pain to own.

Not at all. I guess the GTR experience is how you develop the car, which in itself is a relationship.

Also, the R34 is not that much quicker than an R33 or R32, just remember they are all sports cars with the same engines.

Given the list that you have, I'd take the M3 then AMG, but if I was to get a car and spend $50k of mods for it plus a trailer then I'd take the GTR, I can still save money. 4.9 seconds 0-100kmh and 12.9 1/4 mile time out of the factory it is already not a slow car and very functional as a daily. Adding some mods would really put the car beyond what most people can fathom, and it is very easy to do that.

That said, can you think of any other car between $40k-$50k that's comparable to the R34?

The FG F6 can be had for mid 50s now, but no I cant think of many standard cars that can do those times for <50K

You are comparing a 40k car with cars of a minimum 80k and then even cars with double it to over 160k!

You've said a R34 is "within" your budget... but you've listed cars with a sticker price 4x that of the GTR... Do you have 160k or not?

There are also options in the middle you've not even mentioned (TT-RS as an example is a good choice, close mate has one and I'm very impressed by it)

You cannot expect a R34 GTR to compete with that of a 120k+ Audi for comfort and power delivery etc.

Yes the R34 was a great car, RB26 a gear motor but the RB26 is what 20 years old now and heavy vs alloy motors with major technology advancements to refine the overall package.

Add to the fact a 10yr old car is getting old!

Yes, you could try mine, but I'm out of the city. My car rides very comfortably without any of the jarring harshness of an EVO.

In 4 years, I've only had to replace front rotors, coilpacks, plugs and oil pump, besides the regular 5K services. I voluntarily had all fluids changed on receipt of the vehicle and timing belt (with the oil pump). Admittedly, my car has only travelled 37500 Km with Jap/Oz history logged. There is very faint seepage at the rack & back of gearbox that I'll attend to at the major 40K service.

Thats great info. Im looking at carsales now and looking at websites of the dealers you listed. Your R34 sounds like a mint example, and thanks for the offer to see your car,

Thats great info. Im looking at carsales now for ones around the 60-70K mark. My assumption being the much cheaper ones are possibly poor examples. I live on the northshore so I'll visit the northshore prestige hopefully next week.

For example R34 GTR with books in brilliant nick, only 45k kms on the clock only $45,000 negeotiable, now thats a steal :blush:

BTW the R34 GTR will either outperform all of those cars you listed stock, or with just a little money spent on it.

Comfort would be a different issue, all of those other cars are pretty strong on comfort at the expense of handling. Also 10yo car vs brand new, you will notice the difference in terms of wear around the interior etc

When it comes down to it, you are comparing a R34 GTR to a leathered up comfort car, designed to have a go and comfort, but performance wise you will never be able to compare the gtr or any of them dollor for dollor.

I was wrong about prices. There does appear to be very good examples for <60K. I think it was nagoya that also offer 12 month warrenty and roadside assistance as well.

I saw on Powerplay imports that they have a mspec for sale. Appears it has a softer shock setting.

M-spec = Softer suspension and heated/leather seats (main difference comparing to vspec2)

but if you add a NUR at the end,

M-spec NUR = everything of M-spec + N1 engine, N1 turbo etc, basically N1 spec less oil cooler and more luxuries. Oh yea, theres only 250built too

And this would set you back easily 75k.

Hi, I have an r34 gtr now and I will say that they will outperform (mild mod) those cars on the track and at the drags but not on the road i.e when will you dump the clutch at 8000rpm to beat a 6.2L v8 in the merc.

I hate my car on the road though, its crap for a daily; in fact i had to keep my e46 bmw.

maintenace is ok i guess, i havent had to do any work on my car appart from services/fluid changes etc.

for an all round package, go the c63 amg; nothing is better than a big v8 for daily driving, overtaking etc and will be comfortable. Granted, costs alot more and people will hate u in a merc, u look a cock and your car will get keyed everytime there is a week in the year

lolz, badzz. Ive got a 325i - bought it brand new in 04; very nice car but a little boring.

No probz man, look im being harsh cos the gtr is a great car to own, i rarely drive the thing as its pretty much perfect and i dont want to clock up too many kms on it. But....when i drive it once a month or so, i feel special. It feels special and so far as ive had it, i havent been picked on ie. hoons tailgating me/trying to race

I have nismo s-tune suspension and it is great for handling without being too still; coming from an r33 back in 02' which had coilovers and was terrible

Im currently doing my stage 2 upgrades, first being a simple tune and breathing mods for a nice 255awkw which is on par with most of the other cars on ur list; bmw, rs4 etc.

Addition of turbos and a tad more fine tuning will see an easy 300awkw which is more than enough to keep up with most cars on the street, perhaps even a ferrari or 2 lolz.

Ahhh nice, lucky many having both cars, good balance between the two. My old man is looking at getting a black E92 335i later this year but I still like the E46 3 series, the facelift on the 04's is nice :D
