Interesting information from DFT came through today - turns out NSW Department of Water, Heritage and the Arts enforce fuel regulations. Random. http://www.environment.gov.au/atmosphere/f...mers/index.html

They will want the fuel sample for testing.

Even so, only the CTTT can make a binding order on the seller so I guess that is where I will end up.

Don't be stupid. The government needs that revenue to implement a new ticketing system for our inadequate public transport system and make more cycle lanes for the .01% of the population that rides to work.

Heaven forbid they invest it back into something useful like roads and infrastructure or effective oversight of a known dodgy industry...

Could have sworn that YEARS ago there was a 3c/L excise put on fuel to pay for exactly that... Now we're out of money? Hmm, what happened to that 3 for 3 or whatever they called it?

HMM very unfortunate news duncan. The only caues of ping in an engine is either high comp, too much advance or over heating and seeing as hills just tested your car i doubt any of that is the case leaving the only other culprit of engine ping too be fuel octane level. Definatly somthing sus there .........

I saw a news arcticle about 2 weeks ago where there are 'fuel police' and recently have been hired to a much larger number than before. They go around with mesuring and testing devices and test about 50 servo's a day. Maybe look them up and ask them for a favour if they are around that area???

Personally i havnt had a problem with fuel as of yet, i try sticking to the highway servo because i feel the fuel is more fresh.

Don't be fooled into thinking one particular company is selling bad fuel, they tend to all get their fuel from the same tanker (at least they do in smaller towns)

Up in Cairns, I know FOR A FACT that all the servos are getting their fuel from the same tanker, Shell just has first fill as they own the lines up here.

This means if one particular servo is having problems, it's either

A) Water in the tanks, though this tends to only cause a drama when the tank is nearing empty

B) Wrong fuel ie 91 in the 98 tank

C) They sell very little fuel and it has literally 'gone bad'. Fuel does seem to get shittier over time, a month or so is all it seems to need.

Send them the bill though, they'll only investigate if it's going to cost them money. Trust me, they will listen if they get more than one complaint from the same station

Thanks Dave, that was very helpful.

None the less....I have reached a dead end and despite my initial plans I am not going to pursue this further.

Basically Fair Trading put me on to the fuel testing guys, but they do not beleive the sample will be accepted as valid because I have not stored it properly (water bottle, not cleaned out, stored in sunlight).

I would suggest anyone else who has a similar issue keep a good fuel sample in a proper fuel safe container, and have it tested ASAP after the issue. I left this too long, bad luck for me.

    • Thanks, plan is to drain all fluid tomorrow and do smoke test to find out the leak.   Appreciate your help and want to understand how the system work. So cooling is achieved by the long loop not any rad? The diagram seems to suggest it connects to somewhere inside the cabin and I thought that is a cooler inside firewall. If you look at the diagram it seems to show it connects to something inside firewall. I tried chasing it but not easy unless I take loads off   i am confident pump is good as fluid goes in and it gets soft( steering) but as soon as I turn engine off , loads of bubble come to surface and overflow. When engine is on , fluid level is below minimum but when off it shoots off and thinking it is sucking air in. I suspect aluminium pipe may have a crack line or whole   smoke test with no fluid should be a good start and if needed will remove the pump   In addition, the one going under the engine bay is high pressure line and one directly connecting from pump to resorvoir is return/ low pressure?   finally I searched and suggestion is to use dexron 2 but that is discontinued so bought dexron 3 as all research suggest it is compatible and shouldn’t cause any issues/ blow seals. I bought two liter of dexron 3 motul atf
    • Don't worry about. Just don't try to drive hard enough to make boost and you'll be fine.
    • Yes. This has already been said. It is a loop of hardline in front of the radiator. Because.... the pump is on the LHS and the steering rack hydraulic connections are where they always are on a RHD steering rack....on the RHS. The high pressure line goes down under the engine, along the crossmember, like it does on all Skylines. Don't just throw expensive braided hoses/other kits at it. Work out what is wrong and fix that.
    • Still got the afm on the intake, clamps are shut tight, only loose hose is the one that goes from the j pipe towards the IACV, since it's next to impossible to find a factory hose and the barbs are different sizes (I'm still using clamps on this hose to try and help it seal on the iacv side) I've ordered parts to make up the hotside of the intercooler pipes, I'll plumb it in and see what happens in a few days I suppose The turbo's internally gated, can I just unscrew the tension rod to let the gate open?
    • Did this ever go further ? Would love some updated info
