Hey guys

Today, on the way home after a long drive to the city, my car did something that it has never done before. It would seem as if the car got stuck on 3rd gear. switching over to manual mode didn't do a thing. The display on the dash still says "D". I was scared shitless! Thankfully i wasn't too far from home already.

As soon as i got home, i restarted the engine and i was able to switch to manual mode. Reversed it out the driveway and off i went for a test cruise. It was fine at first, then when i got out of a roundabout the car went crazy and switched from first gear to second then back to first. This happened all the way home. i had to ease off the accelerator.

I was panicked at this point. Then i decided to reset the ecu. After that went for another test drive and the problem went away. Still weren't too sure so i took it for a long drive about 80 Km. Smooth as silk.

Can this be described as gearbox slipping? Another GT-8 nightmare? If so how did an ecu reset fix it?

Any suggestions as to what the heck could be causing this?

might worth to get the transmission serviced. the CVT tranny oil is special, not the usual Nissan J-Matic. oil itself would cost you about $900 some charge $1000+ then add on top of that the labour cost at the mechanic. Yes, the oil itself is expensive...

Yeah, i heard :D

So you think it might be the transmission? But how did an ecu reset fix it? I'll still do an oil change though, just to be in the safe side.

Anyone got any cvt oil for sale?

it might be just a temporary fix until the ECU start gathering data and senses it's seizing up again...

if you are not sure whether the previous owner has replaced the tranny oil, then it's a good idea to do it.

CVT is very expensive to fix once it has problem, with little knowledge from mechanics in Australia. Murano's & Maxima's CVT are different. Even if it cost $2000 to service the tranny, it's best you spend the money now to prevent problem before it actually happens.

Agreed mate. Agreed. Well i better shop around for some liquid gold.

like i said, if anyone has some oil for sale or know where to get them from exactly, i'll appreciate the lead.

Thanks

EDIT: i already know i can get it from cvt.co.nz but i prefer a more "local" solution :D cheers

Ask the guys at Is motoring to see if they can get it for you,

when i serviced mine, i got mine shipped from Nissan perth warehouse for around 1k, which i believe is the only place to get it in AUS

I think IS can get it cheaper though.

I have a near full tin if your interested,,,

Thanks for the heads up bro. I'll get in touch with them this tuesday

PM sent regarding that near full tin :P

I took my car in for a service today and asked about CVT oil whilst I was there. They only stock Murano & maxima CVT oil with code KLE52-xxxxx.

However, after chatting further, I said I had the exact Nissan code, being KLE-51-00004. The Counter Guy was so impressed that he made the extra effort to search for me, and BINGO!!!!

I got quoted $595 for each 4L can (he gave me a discount from the $650 retail price). The only problem is that the Dealership won't bring it in for me as it comes in 6 x 4 L can packs (and each CVT tranny flush uses about 8L or so).

Hence, anybody wanting to get the oil too? I only need 2 more V35 owners and we can all go get our trannies flushed....

I might post a new thread to kick-start this...

Sweet. Only problem is that i'm in Perth :)

Anyways, the cheapest quote i got is $650 from a warehouse in perth. I'm still saving up the cash for that.

PS: Is there any way to check the oil level on a GT-8? Like a dipstick or something?

I got another problem though. The car is running well ever since.Shifting is smooth. The only thing that worries me, is the slight rattle i hear whenever it changes gear from first to second. It's not too loud, i can only hear it when i open my windows and listen to the sound underneath the car.

It would then disappear as soon as the car is on normal speed. I was able to replicate this by going to manual mode and put the car on high gear then step on the accelerator.

It almost sounds like the rattle you would get when driving a manual trying to launch from the 4th gear :( Is this a sign of impending doom?

Hi there. I'm just new in the forum and soon to be a 2004 V35 250gtm owner. I got it at the auction from japan. I'm about to get the car 2 weeks from now.. Just have a few questions about this special oil thing for the CVT:

*does 250gt and 350gt-8 share the same exact tranny oil (KLE51-00004)?

*if not, what specific description of oil should I get for the 250gt and is it as expensive as the oil used for 350gt-8?

*and also the car is sittin' around 38k's now, when should I get the transmission serviced?

Any information regarding service and maintenance of the 250gt would be really helpful. Thanks!

Hey mate, welcome.

As far as i know, only the Skyline GT-8 uses that transmission oil (KLE51-00004) no other skyline variants use it. I don't know much about 250 GTs, maybe someone else can help you out with it.

But a general rule of thumb i usually follow is that never to trust the odo. Service everything including tranny oil, engine and anything else as soon as you get the car.

Goodluck

yeah true. you really can't trust what's on the clock.. i'm really planning to get the service done that's why i'm collecting infos about which proper oils should i use and how much do i have to spend.

thanks a lot mate.

250GT (4speed) and 300GT (5 speed) use conventional automatics NOT CVT - use Nissan J-Matic or Castrol Transmax Z

350GT (5 speed) coupe uses conventional auto NOT CVT - use Nissan J-Matic or Castrol Transmax Z

350GT sedan is the only model in the V35 range that use CVT - use Nissan KLE51-00004

Hope that helps clear things up.
