hi all

im having problems when down changing from 4th to 3rd in my gtr. it first started after some track work and appears after another track day and a couple of mountain runs that its getting worse.

im getting a crunch/grind when down changing into 3rd. it only happens at high rpm and sounds like more of a gear grind rather than a lighter feeling syncho crunch. its really not happy trying to engage 3rd. all other gear engagement is fine either up or down gears.

just wondering what could cause this problem?? there is very little information out there about people having problems with the renowned strong getrag so am a bit confused..

would fluid help or does this sound more like a rebuild. what about clutch or could the syncho be shot. im taking it in to be looked at on wed but just thought id but a call out to anyone who may have experienced something similar

cheers everyone

Do and oil change first with some Castrol transmax Z or equivalent, if that does not help, it's most likely the synchro on 3rd, and will require a rebuild/freshen up.

10 years and xxxxxkms nothing lasts forever!

Put automatic transmission fluid in a manual?

They are different to the R32-33GTR box.

Fibre bushes used in the synchros and the way it is built (getrag) requires a type of ATF fluid.

Supras use the same/similar innards and use a type of ATF fluid in the gbox.

Redline oil will kill it.

dropped it down today. going to try changing the oil to see if any improvement. if not its off for a refreshment.

im pretty sure the guys are using redline superlight shockproof gear oil which is ATF like.

yer the word is that the lightweight shock proof is excellent for other gearboxes but kills getrag.

my fingers are crossed that the oil is all it will need!!!!!
