has anyone ever rebuild a transfer case for a 33GTR?

ive been told mine is on its way out due to some loud and abrupt clunks when cruising around.

If anyone has rebuilt or replaced a transfer case, how much did you spend?

Just trying to do some homework here.

Cheers,

Nigel.

budget $1000 for a basic rebuild. like all things GTR it could go higher but if you get out of it for a grand you should be fairly satisfied.

A year ago I was quoted approx $1200 or $1300 for a rebuild, more if you wanted it to be stronger in some way.....I can't remember if it was friction plates or something else. That was from Racepace.

I bought a second hand one for $400, there was another available for $200 but not completely sure of condition "I think it is in good condition", I know which one I bought :D

I can't remember if I called Award diff and gearbox for a quote, I think they were a little cheaper.

Just rebuilt mine (R32) with about 1100 dollars worth of parts, replaced all clutch and friction plates, bearings, seals and circlips, shims, retaining rings and stuff, re- machined oil pump housing for proper clearance etc. Don't know what I would have had to pay someone to do it though. If you've got clunking then it sounds like more than just a plate and clutch pack replacement job, though not necessarily something more expensive. If you can get some sort of ballpark diagnoses you might get a better idea of costs. If you were going to rebuild instead of just replacing with a second hand one you might want to do a clutch pack/bearing/reshim rebuild anyway.

I knew that my transfer case was on its way out when my car sounded like an electric RC above 40km.

The cause of it was a broken circlip in one of the couplings in the t/case.

Thought i'd put in my 2c worth of symptom.
