Sick Of My Tein Coilovers!

Hey guys

To cut a long story short im using the Tein Super Drift coilovers that i was using in my previous ECR33 in my BCNR33 GTR now, i had the mounts on the rear of the shocks cut off and a fork type mount fabricated onto it professionally (r33 gts25t use and eye type mount, r33 gtrs use a fork type mount).

Have been using these in my car for about 1year now, to be honest i have never really liked them, their just too stiff, noisy and bouncy, no matter what i do with the dampening they never ride as nice as i would like them too, the spring rates are 7kg front and rear.

Seems the pillow ball tops have started to wear as they are getting very noisy now, have looked at replacing the pillow ball in them but dont think it is worth it for the price to be honest, so i want something that does not use pillow ball mounting, would much much rather rubber mounts in the top hats.

Whats is my best option to go with, thinking of just selling these now and buying something similar to these but with softer spring and rubber mounted top hats.

Possibilities so far are:

HKS Hypermax III, come with strengthend rubber top mounts, spring rates are 7kg front and 5kg rear

Greddy Type S, come with rubber top mounts, not sure on spring rates??

Tein Super Streets, use standard top mounts, not sure on spring rates but think the would be a bit soft, think they are 4 or 5kg??

Car is at the moment 100% road use but wouldnt mind taking it on the track sometime in the future

Basically just after any opinions/help on what the best option would be.

Another option i have is to try and source some tein Rubber top mounts that would replace my pillow ball top mounts tha i have at the moment, i have seen some of the super street kits that come with a tein rubber upper mount, that should fit my super drifts without to much fuss shudnt they? they look like they would just bolt straight on.

That would be the noisy pillow balls sorted out if i can manage to source some for a resonable price that is.

To combat the harsh/bouncy/stiff ride i could change my springs to say a 6-5kg spring, would my shocks need to be revalved if i ended up doing this??

Won't help too much with the stiff springs, but takes some of the initial shock out over bumps. You could also try BC coilover upper mounts, but I think they use 63.5mm ID springs instead of the Tein 65mm ID. They are a lot cheaper though.

Why the hell did you buy Tein Super Drift coilovers and expect them to be comfy?? :whistling:

If you want just better performance for street use, flex or SS should do it.

Super Drift says it all... you woulnd't want to be drifting with soft suspension??!

Tein Super Streets if you want to stick to a coilover. 4kg springs are fine, just stiffen up the shock if you are really pushing it.

I just changed from stiff coilovers to bilstein shocks, king springs and standard rubber top mounts. This is softer and lot more comfier but still handles very well. Most times on australian roads stiff coilovers are worse at handling cause your bumping all over the place.

By the way to have them rebuilt will set you back between $150-$300 per stick. pretty cheap when compared to the price of newbies and they come back just like new again! Throw in some extra dosh and have softer springs added. And Wallah!

I had my front Tein HA's done. they were leaking and shit so cost $600. They came with the car from Japan so, yea.

sure someone will back me up here, NISMO Type-S, get on it.

i have them in my R33 GTR, daily driven everyday. i love them and will recommend to anyone. you dont even grit your teeth when you drive over train tracks.

Am seriously thinking of those too, are rather exspensive though, about $2800 nzd just for the shocks, do you have any pics of your car with these fitted? want to see what the ride height is like :P

Tein's are ok, but you'll get far superior results from Cusco. I've run both and wouldn't even compare the two.

Silk Road's are also the other brand you should look at. Not sure if they make them for R33, but I love them to death. If they made them for ER34 I'd definitely have a set, but I'm going with Cusco Zero2E for mine :(

From my experience they feel more accurate, are nicer to drive on, and the quality of them is higher as well. I'm fitting Zero2E's with the in car damper adjustment on mine, which actually makes a massive difference compared to the Chinese crap we always get with "32 points of damper adjustment".

I've got the full SK Bilstien/Whitleline kit in my 33 and IMO it is great gear. Feels good on the street and is apparently very good on track.

Firm ride but still very comfortable......just food for thought as an option other than coilovers
