I will update as soon as it arrives.

on option 1, I don't believe it will display nav options on the screen, but I could be wrong on this as I have not tried and Iphone on this set up. I currently use an Ipod classic 80gb on a similar set up (ie. connected through the plug on the base to a 3 rca plug lead. On the Ipod I have to select TV "on" to make it show on the cars screen when I play movies. There is an auto option but I have not tried this yet.

I know of another M35 driver who bought the option 2, version and I don't know if it will work on his car as he has the single din stereo and I am not sure the PA11 NSI system is compatible. So he may be able to give some advise sooner than me.

Cheers

Andy

Andy, do you know if this spec.dock adaptor can be connected straight into the stock unit or do you need a USA-Spec adaptor for it to work (just like Stryde's set up)? In his set up, it looks like the Ipod connector is a permanent fixture - meaning the complete removal of the ashtray panel. It would be good if it can still be closed/folded while not in use.

Cheers,

Rob

The Specdoc replaces the insert that is fitted into the standard ash tray. From what I understand you need to drill a hole in the bottom of the ash tray that is fixed in the car. The ash tray door functions as normal and can be closed when not in use.

You can connect 2 ways, 1) via the RCA leads directly into the TV tuner AUX input. (but you will need the adaptor leads for the TV input that goes to RCA plugs)

or 2) using the PA11-NSI which they identify as being able to be used with all Ipods and Iphones up to and including 3GS.

I can not guarantee this is correct but if you are concerned I would send them and email as from what I have read they are quick to respond and helpful.

I was reading about the USA-spec Adaptor and the International adaptor also last night and the best I could work out is that it is only relevant when using a PA11-NSI or similar device (DICE etc). The issue seemed to be about charging and I do not think it applied the the RCA versions. I also took it to mean it was only for older versions and that new ones being sold are compatible for all Ipones upto 3GS.

I sure as hell hope this is correct as I don't want to have to order another adaptor..... LOL

Cheers

Andy

Just one query: if you go for option 1, is it expected to be able to display the iphone nav options on the factory V35 screen??

If you would like to display anything off your iphone onto an external screen and don't mind jailbreaking/hacking your iphone which allows you to install 3rd party apps. Then "ScreenSplitr" is the app for you this will clone the iphone screen exactly and will display on any external screen.

I like the look of the Spec-dock but was concerned that I needed to lay my iPhone to the side to allow the Nav/Video/Ipod to be displayed in Landscape mode, then I found the app "Rotation Inhibitor" which would set the display to landscape no matter what angle the iPhone is in.

Also those who do not like the GPS lag in the iPhone can use an external bluetooth GPS and use the app "RoqyGPS".

I have not fully tested this just waiting to get on top of a few bills, but will surely post once done, Hope it helps somebody?

Using the PA11-NSI ? please explain I thought these were used for Steering Wheel Switch Controls not for connecting the iPhone to the OEM Screen ?

Have a look at, www.specdoc.com

They use this system in conjunction with a cord to connect to the base of the iphone and plays audio only.

Yes, you are right about using the steering controls with this system.

  • 3 weeks later...

I received my Specdock Ipod/Iphone dock for my car last week.

The process of ordering from this company was very easy and great communication. Even on the basic US International post it only took 5 days to make it to Australia from the postal date.

The first image is of the unit and the wires with the Iphone I am using.

To install the unit you need to remove the center console. To do this put the car in N and disconnect the battery. You will need to remove all the cables at the joiners to take the console out of the car to work on as you will need to cut a hole in the bottom of the ash tray.

When you cut the hole in bottom of the ash tray, first remove the insert, then mark out where you want to cut. (hole size 27mm x 17mm for the RCA pluged Specdoc). I cut the hole on the right side of the ash tray but if you do the same be careful of the wires for the ash tray light. In the end I removed the ash tray light as I figured it would be of no use to me in the future anyway. If you cut your hole in the left there is less chance of damaging the light (as I did, doh).

You do need a power source for the unit and an earth point (this is just a point of metal to attach the negative). The power source could be the cigarette lighter but I used a power source I have off the back of the stereo.

I already had an RCA (audio + video) installed from the TV tuner to the front of the car so it was just a matter of connecting the three leads to the previously installed leads.

The final result is a very neat install for the Ipod/Iphone dock that charges the unit and plays both audio and video through the factor stereo and monitor. When not in use the ash tray closes and hides any viability of the install.

Looks good, Andy!

Does the GPS work on the factory screen?

is the phone stable whilst driving?

Not tried the gps on the screen yet, still learning to work the phone. I will try tonight.

The phone is very stable as it has a very positive engagement onto the dock. The dock is also stuck down so no movement sideways. There is a small amount of movement as you go to push the screen of the unit forward but it is only small. Not something that will let the iphone fall out, just the ash tray closing slightly.

Cheers

Andy

Sorry, but no output of the GPS to the monitor.

If you would like to display GPS or anything off your iPhone to an external screen, Please have a look at my earlier post.

If you are willing to jailbreak/hack your iPhone you can display anything of your iPhone.

Let me know if anyone needs any help, I'm quite the iPhone & Wii hacker. ( Wish I was better at Car Audio Installation )

cruzen: sweet! mines jailbroken anyway, so will have a look for that app :ermm:

Let me know if anything doen't quite make sense , I'm happy to help

ALSO , Check out another app called "TVout2" , This was released after Screensplitr and might be better !

Hey Guys, I am a new forum member that has been spending hours searching the forum, trying to get my head around all of this TV/Ipod mod stuff.

Andy, thanks for comments on the other thread, I just thought I would write in this one and not take over Ceffys sale.

The SpecDoc, Looks sweet.

Can I just Clarify a few things in relation to the 100s of pages that I have read so far.

I just want to do a few what I hope to be simple changes. I would like to have the Tuner, A Video in and Ipod in. Not fussed about the GPS as It sounds to expensive to fix. And steering wheel controls are only a bonus.

If I buy a Asku TV tuner off chook, install in the boot I will run a video cable from the boot to glove box(Which Cable? from Chris?) I will then have the option of running video(via Ipod or similar) on the screen and Television on the screen, correct? and will this give me music through the Bose system?

Can I control this through the screen?? or will i need to run an IR from boot also?

Then if i went down the Spec Doc path, I can have ipod in ashtray but can I still have the tuner and video input in glovebox?

Once all this is done do I still get Rianto to come out and make all my display in to English or does attaching the Tuner give you different menu options in English.

Am I correct in thinking this is what I would need to purchase.

1) Asku Tuner

2) Video cable from tuner to front of car

3) Spec Doc

4) get Rianto in Melb to come change to english.

Would like to try keep under $1000 buck if possible. If not might have to hold off for a while.

Cheers,

Noel

control will be via IR. I'm slowly working on a drive from the front solution. lead for video in to the car comes from me. from there you will also need a VIM piece. up to you where you put the video input. most of the cars I have done it is somewhere in the armrest.

Hey Andy, Just a quick question. Did you order the $149 dock with the RCA lead, active and earth wires? I just ordered that one and thought I would double check that its the correct one. I am going to connect to ASUKA Tv tuner input which I have just purchased also. .

Thanks.

Noel

Hi Noel

Yes, that is the same Spec doc I put in.

The Asuka tuner connects to the OEM tuner in the boot using the the RCA plugs you can get from Chris Rogers. You then need to run the IR received to the front of the car, down the left side under the trim at the edge of the car is a good path and I put my receiver just under the glove box on the left side of the car.

You will also need to run a set of RCA cables from the tuner in the boot from one of the 2 AUX inputs to the front of the car to plug the Specdoc.

Hope this explains the process.

Cheers

Thanks Andy, That's good news for me,seeing as its already ordered. . HAHA

I am a little confused now though as this is all very new to me. I was under the impression that I would need to change over all 3 of the cables from the OEM tuner (2 aerial leads and Main wiring loom) and connect to the Asuka.. Am I wrong am I?

The cable from Chris is on its way and from what I gather that plugs in to the empty spot on the OEM and has RCA plugs that come out. Does this plug in to the Asuka? then I run a completely separate set of standard RCA's to the SpecDock (assume down the left side trim also so get flat leads)?

What about the aerial connections? I figured I will need to do some cutting of the old connections and make new ones for the Asuka.

I suppose the easy question is do you know of any photos of it installed? I haven't found any of the Asuka installed on the Forum

post-74845-1279461962_thumb.jpg This is photo of my tuner. Pulled out other day to try make sense of all the stuff i've read.

The OEM tuner stays in place and you connect the Asuka tuner to it.

Then on the TV mode you select the AUX input from the tuner (this is easier to see when you have done the language conversion)

You will need external arieals as the built in ones will not work.
