Looking at using a different coil set up on my 30DET. At the moment, I am running a series 2 head with standard coils. This has been fine for a while, but just after the drags a few weeks ago car started having issues on full boost, and now I am certain its the coils breaking down. I don't want to waste my time/money with splitfires (again), in my opinion/experience they are shit.

Anyone have any suggestions as to what I could use? A workshop over here runs Hyundai Sonata coils on a 1000rwhp+ 2JZ, so was considering looking into this. Just wondering if there is anything else out there that is known to be effective on any RB.

Best option is the XR6T coils - cannot think of another car that will create the cylinder pressure that these cars do and without spark issues.

Just make sure you get the upgraded BF coils which are designated by the last two letters AB not AA. Have used these coils upto 1400nm of torque. All you need is 2ms on time for proper saturation - which will also be fine at high rpm.

If you keep killing coils it honestly sounds like you've got other issues, not the coilpacks themselves...

Simply changing the entire setup won't neccesarily fix it either which is another point.

If you are over 380-400rwkw then you need to pickup the HKS DLI box and wire it in.

Good for well over 550rwkw then :blush:

How do you go with fitting them to the RBs?

Can you fit leads to them easy enough?

You would have to make a mounting bracket up which would sit the coils up higher - ie away from the heat. The xr6t coils have a slight offset on the plug boot but the xr8's run a straight boot, you could probably get way with either as you would probly cut the boot in half so a slight offset wont be an issue. They just run a spring inside the coil boot from coil to spark plug so you could even use a boot off something generic.

I've tested theses coils on numerous occasions and are able to fire up to 35mm gap - which is as far as my coil tester goes, so firing a 1.1mm gap at 20psi on an rb30 will be a walk in the park!.

These coils are also used as a multi stike at idle on the falcons to help with emmissions - so if your ECU permits you could also do this.

Been off-line for a bit.

The first set of coils I had (standard items) I killed as a result of wiring on my behalf. This was sorted, but instead of putting in standard coils, I used a set of Splitfires instead. The Splitfires lasted about 8 - 12 months, and then one started to fault (i.e. it would cut in and out, so on warm up the car would only run on 5 cylinders). After a while a second coil started having the same problem so I got rid of them and started running the standard coils. These are the ones which are now playing up under boost. I dont think its any other issue other than, the current ones are 10 - 15 years old and are finally giving way.

I'm not sure whether to get a brand new set of Nissan coils, or try something else.

do these require an ignitor like S1 setup or will they work with out like S2 setup?

Every single setup with splitfires i can think of would beg to differ on that point, my own car included.

most oem coils by 140,000kms 10+years old are getting tired and start to leak but there are those out there that still perform perfect. as for the splitfires you speak of, tough luck, but you cant judge every splitfire based on one uncommon experience, as r31nismoid put it there are far more instances of the opposite occuring to contradict your statement.

i think many forum users have been over this many times and confirmed, splitfire/yellow jackets/red chinese/oem coils all deliver seemingly identical performance. i believe its just a matter of getting new coils no matter what sort (2nd hand just not worth the risk IMO). and unless your very unlucky, they should perform well for a long time.

what ecu are you using? if it has an adjustable dwell setting then any coil will do.

wasted spark is good but your are halving the dwell time with that option. if in doubt cdi is the way to go.

of the waste spark coils i have used, rx7 s4 is the best. then 1ggeu then mitsu gto tt coil pack. of them the mitsu coil had the easiest mounting options.

    • The cam I am actually putting in (a few posts up) is actually smaller than my current one. At least duration/overlap wise. All the chop stuff I hear just sounds like an engine running badly, because it is. I then envision driving it around in 1st gear and being massively sad about it bucking to the beat of said chop. There is an idle video of someone with a similar cam floating around the internet, but mine is a custom cam (so is his) so it'll never be the same, plus the fact exhausts are entirely different. What I want to do is put some bullet mufflers/race mufflers in to replace a couple sections straight pipes that currently replace the two extra cats that I don't need. But this is even further down the line!
    • I can tell you now, when the bracket that the little hydraulic ram attaches to snaps, with a subframe, and V8 from an AMG C63 on it, it sounds like someone letting shotgun off right beside you. It leaves your ears ringing, and a huge thankfulness that you never ever put a body part under something heavy that's only supported by a hydraulic lift...
    • Still not a guarantee fix. I used a high quality butyl-mastiq (the black goo that's not really silicone nor polyurethane, same stuff they use from the factory that just spreads out like melty cheese), and I still get lots of water on both sides of the trunk when raining or washing the car. I also suspect the factory spoiler rubber gasket might not be sealing well, so I'm thinking of adding a thin layer of grey silicone around the bolt holes on both sides and see if that's where it also leaks from. The biggest issue is that these cars don't come with a drain hole on each side like other coupes and hatchbacks.
