Well after seeing Smitty42's Alfa on here I thought I would post up my ongoing project car.

Mary Jane

1985 Alfa Romeo 75

2.5 V6

The car is to be a registered track car delegated to motorkhana events and club track days. Car came with a short ratio gearbox from a twinspark and LSD.

The plan:

Well for now its registration. Then comes extractors, suspension work (koni shocks and new springs probably), updated to slotted rotors, rebuilt SZ calipers that I obtained, and of course the mandatory weight reduction. I think I will run at khana days like that for a while until the engine lets go. Then its out with that and in with either a SR20DET or a quad cam alfa V6 running ITB's.

Personally I like the second option.

When bought her:

Progress so far:

Honestly not much. I have removed all the soft sound deadening and started chipping away at the hard stuff. Dry ice didn't do anything to it. Heat gun and chisel seems to be the way.

Brakes have been overhauled, fatter adjustable rear sway bar has been fitted, replaced a heap of bushes, and general maintenence including a full 100,000 kilometer service. Which was quite the adventure let me tell you.

Updates will be slow, new tyres tomorrow then off to be registered. Getting a stainless side pipe exhaust setup made for me at what is essentially cost price without labor for a) weight reduction and b) because the stock system is restrictive. Need to let out the alfa note!

Alfa love. At least yours is already red.

Car came with a short ratio gearbox from a twinspark and LSD.

Lucky you! I have to find me one of them...

or a quad cam alfa V6 running ITB's.

:ninja:

Yeah definitely get the heat gun onto it. Heat it up and then it will peel of with a paint scraper.

Lucky you! I have to find me one of them...

Pity your not in tassie I know of at least another three didion rear ends just sitting around. One in a wrecked twinspark and the other in a wrecked 3.0Q.

In other news minilites have been ordered along with Potenza Re55's - gotta love trade prices.

Also picking up the street tyres tomorrow hopefully, just crappers with tread to get me to and from events.

As well as that I replaced the rear swaybar mounts (one was snapped and the other one looked half torqued to death), took off the badging bar the Alfa 75 bit. Put the stock original 75 windshields up for sale on ebay and did a bit more stripping. Found one patch of rust that I didn't know about in the spare tyre well underneath some deadener. Will probably cut the well out and replace with pressed sheet metal after its registered.

Can't do much more between now and rego. Engine getting a quick tune tomorrow, will try and upload a video.

EDIT: have already decided I will be going with a Porsche for the next track project, probably an early 911S around 1977ish.

Yeah I went to a track day in my uncles 911 GT3 RS and it converted me.

No abs. No traction control. Interior consisted of me, wheel, seat and guages.

Hard as hell to drive (I kind of spun out a bit - my uncle nearly shat himself...) but he thinks that there is nothing better to learn to drive fast in, because if you can drive a 911 fast you can drive anything.

Upsides are pretty good too, you have a quite high initial purchase price but its comparable to a good R32 GTR. Plus sides are air cooled, easy to get parts (US of A), heaps of tuning potential, handle well and the list goes on and on. Can even pick up a turbo model if I had a death wish.

Back on to the alfa though this car is designed to teach me basic skills, then will be sold after a year or so and replaced with the Porsche for track work.

Won't be as quick as any gtr but the point is skill development more than anything.

Okay many changes coming this way shortly. Have committed to a particular engine build and very much intend to see it through, this means I give up on another R33 or the 911until this build is finished.

Heres a sample pic of the (not mine) finished product:

Parts List:

- Reconditioned 2.5 Alfa V6 heads, new valves, springs, retainers.

- 164S Cams.

- Balanced crank

- THS Forged Conrods.

- Venolia 8.5:1 Forged Pistons.

- Greg Gordon Eaton MP62 Supercharger Kit.

- FMIC behind grill painted black.

- Replaced water pump.

- replaced oil pump.

- Cleaned inside/out, acid dipped, high temp coated stock headers.

- 440cc Injectors (not sure which brand, still deciding on the ECU).

- New engine mounts and rubbers.

- Twin side pipes.

- Top gun leads.

- New Dissy.

- Bosch sport coil.

- ECU unknown, still making a choice - probably go with Wolf V500.

- Still sorting fuel system, trying to keep it in tank with a modified stock fuel tank

Possible power output unknown, aiming for 300 HP but the real goal is the sound of a supercharged 2.5 litre Italian V6 on side pipes  .

  • 2 months later...

Car is registered as of today.

Amazingly I was faulted on only three things at inspection, all of which took me twenty minutes to correct:

- Heater does not blow air at window

- One number plate globe

- One intermittently faulty reverse light

I have to say I could have failed on so many other things (not essential things)... But I take wins where I can get them :P

Also added to the "need to buy" list are high temp silicon coolant hoses from Greg Gordon...

Bilsteins on order are taking a while. Can't find a spring that I like either - while it may not look it Alfa 75's sit quite close to the ground already and any drop in height means that ripple strips become problematic let alone speed bumps.

Also picking up two parts cars tomorrow for mock up purposes and general testing.

On and on it goes.

    • So we have most the interior back in, and for the first time with one OEM speaker hooked up. The 31 is running, driving and now tunes!!! Hahaha yet another step for the sub that sat 10m under for two weeks!!! unbelievable really 👌 lots of love work and not giving up on her. Seen so many youngsters part way less, and in way better condition. I’m stubborn, thinking another problem is just a hurdle to overcome, One at a time. IMG_9277.mov
    • That is correct. I'm using a modified ABS ring and a ZF speed sensor on my rear diff for speed input. I'm running a Haltech ecu.
    • Been busy with the newborn. We originally thought we were going to go for a third, but we're good with two lol. He's starting to actually sleep now so I've had some energy to work on the car. It's been parked away in the garage since late November due to winter.  I went ahead and redid all my head oil drains. I originally had my front and rear head drain going into the same pipe but have since split them up. I also added an Ethanol content sensor to get ready to run E85 this summer. Tossed it on my return line. Sensor sits nicely under my intake manifold.    I also have a lot of parts that came in for my rear end. I'll be swapping over to a 3.3 final drive and doing the GK teck anti squat mod. While the rear subframe is off, I'll also change every bushing. We're planning on buying another house soon with the condition that I get at a minimum a 2 door garage, so I'll wait to have more room for this. Now onto the strange things that recently happened... After changing the lower rad hose (It had been sitting in my cabinet for well over a year and was the last hose I had to replace), I let the car idle in the garage to bleed my coolant. After running for a few minutes, it started missing. Got much worst within a minute or two and then stalled and would not restart. My crank sensor decided to crap itself. No damage, no explanation, just died. I went ahead and replaced it with another ZF sensor but the heavier duty stainless model with a shield. Tossed that in and started right up. Has anyone else seen this? I hate when things fail without cause. Luckily this was a blessing in disguise... This lead me to recheck my timing. It seems I may have had a beer or two the last time I had set my TDC angle as I was off exactly 5 degrees... I miscounted a line haha. I was running 5 degrees less then commanded. It's a little embarrassing but helps explain why my dyno operator seemed to think I should be making more then 478rwkws.
    • Sharing results from recent Liberty Walk R35 GTR, since they are still considered as somesort of a V36 Skyline. We do them turbos too. This are high flowed SS-1 models with ball bearing conversion done.  Car have managed to pull 485awkws @ 20Psi so far pushing limitations of factory built engine. The build list for R35 GTR enthusiasts as follow : HyperGear high flowed stock turbos in SS1 (G25-660 specs) Custom titanium intake pipes. Vspec performance titanium front pipes. Vspec performance 4" titanium exhaust. Upgrade fuel pumps. 1200cc injectors. Ignition coilpacks Hks intake plenum. Hks intercooler piping. Greddy intercooler. Greddy bovs. Top-secret coolant reservoir. Emtron ecu. Straight E85. Built gear box.
    • Nah no bearings, just slip fit.  Would be a reasonably challenging but not impossible job to modify it to run bearings but I'm hoping that's not necessary as I may have well built one myself if I end up spending hours modifying it!
