intercooler choice

I have only just started upgrades to my R33 GTST and am looking to install a front mount. I have $2K to spend and am seeking feedback on weather i am better off going for a brand name kit ie HKS,Apexi or getting a custom made cooler.

i've got a hybrid monster cooler (600x300x76) and it is sensational costs a lot less then the japanese stuff... if i went for a brand name, i'd go for a trust v-spl...

Have a look at www.mercurymotorsport.com.au I just bought a Hybrid front mount kit with piping, clamps and joins for $1150 delivered. Excellent kit and a top business to deal with.

I 've got the hybrid kit as well, for the price it's great and it looks pretty good with the stainless steel piping.

Get a jap cooler! Look around some For Sale forums theres alot of brand new kits HKS/Trust selling between $1300-$1500. I remember when they all used to sell well over $2000!

I got a Hybrid Monster intercooler, and I'd have to say it is an excellent cooler. The polished piping kit looks the goods as well. Installed in 5hrs and the improvement is sensational.

It seems these days with out money been pretty good compare to the japanese yen, the price of intercooler kits seems to drop a fair bit.

Like considering a few hundreds buck difference, I would go for a branded intercooler like the Trust one. Not saying there is anything wrong with the Hybrid intercoolers.

I notice none of the responses so far have mentioned the size of intercooler you should use.

What sort of power level are you looking for?

The selection of the right sized flow of intercooler will make the difference to how much value for money the upgrade offers.

The hybrid intercoolers seem quite good from all acounts and they have a few different sized cores availible (don't just assume bigger is better here).

I was actually told that a too big of an intercooler will make the turbo work harder and not necessary make more power. Not sure if this is true or not.

I guess it depends on how much power you are aiming for and if you are to decide further down the track to change to a bigger turbo.

Where do you think they are made? There is a HUGE difference in quality between the HKS and Trust intercoolers compared to the Chinese coolers that a lot of people are selling. I'll tell you one thing for sure, you would have a very hard time trying to sell those Chinese things in Japan. The Japanese customers know quality when they see it.

The Trust coolers are exceptionally good quality. I definately wouldn't buy the V-SPL kit though. It uses an extruded core like PWR or ADRAD. You are better off to get one of them, as at least you can get them in 73mm compared to 65mm for the Trust. The R-SPL however, is an awesome core. Very high cooling efficiency, but of course you have to pay for it.
