Hey all,

Ive done some mechanical work in the past but nothing this extravagant. Ive identified everything I need to remove to take out the old manifold. Ive got all the parts I need. My only concern. Will I break bolts in the block? I was told to make sure the engine is COLD and to spray the bolts with some WD40 to help loosen them up. What are the chances of breaking bolts and if I break them, can they be removed?

Also when I put it all back together, how tight should the bolts be? Air wrench tight? As hard as I can push the ratchet?

most likely you will break some yes. if you do you can try remove them yourself if your feeling confident or apparently theres mobile mechanics that can do it. if you do get them out yourself make sure you dont drill too far otherwise you'll hit galleries.

just nip them up tight with a normal sized spanner/ratchet. dont go crazy with rattle guns or anything like that.

Part of mr is sure I'm gonna break some bolts. I've found specialized tools to remove broken head bolts. You drill into them then reverse screw this device in the forwards drive the device to remove the bolt. Where could I buy replacement bolts? Would high tensile bolts be fine? Are there Nissan replacements? Kits with manifold gaskets?

Yeah I didn't think I'd need an air wench lol. Hopefully I can undo them by hand!

Nissan still sell the bolts, I bought mine from JustJap, but any high tensile bolt should be fine.

Suggestion for removing broken bolts, don't use the reverse thread type, use the box type.

Refer here, to when I had to remove a stud snapped back inside the block in the tightest corner of the exhaust side of the engine (still in the bay), we found the reverse thread did nothing, but hammering in the square shaped one and turning it out with a vice grip did the job perfectly.

Hmmm after having a closer look, the bolts actually look like studs with a nut... Is that incorrect? Are the bolts under the heatshield?

Looking over at justjap, are these what I need if i break bolts?

Those are what you need, yes.

I THINK I recall it being M10 x 1.25 ... but try and check that first.

Manifold and turbo have a heatshield yes.

I replaced all of mine, despite only one being broken, and luckily no others broke coming out.

To get the studs in/out, I put two nuts on the end...put a ring spanner over one, and a socket over the other, turn both inwards in opposite directions (so the nuts wind towards each other and become tight), then wind the stud in/out, and undo the nuts. Make sense ?

EDIT: Link showing what I mean in post below.
