Garrett Gt2860 -9s

Reading posts like this always makes me wonder if i went the right way with my -9's Dam you!!

I've had both. For street car -9s win... You'll be just as fast as -5 car in the hills, if not faster as you don't fall on/off boost anywhere near as bad and its much easier to go faster :)

The stories I've heard over the years suggest that GT2530s were probably the best all round on an RB26 , if you know where to look you may be able to buy them through Garrett these days . 446179-23 is the cartridge number from memory .

707160-9/GTSS (SAME) were never intended to be a big power turbocharger , they should do better than any OE spec ones including the R34 GT2554Rs and you lose the ceramic turbines .

This issue's been round the block so many times you've worn through the tar . The story is that a GTR is a heavy car with a marginally sized engine for its mass . They need boost from torque to lift their skirts and the sooner the better if you don't rev em up everywhere . Nissan didn't intend them to be a suburban grocery getter but plenty of them are driven around the burbs . You should probably look at GTSSs as a mild mid range turbo for 2.6L GTRs and they sound like a good compromise for those not spending squillions or aiming at the moon .

Without later technology its unlikely you can build something thats "a bit more" but a "bit less" than say GT2530s . There is no turbine thats in between what a GTSS and a GT2530 has and AFAIK the SS one is a smaller trim version of the same turbine .

Also off the top of my head the housings on GTSSs (I think) may have the same AR ratios as OE GTR turbos and if thats the case there are no in between sizes here either .

Ultimately you have to make the decision about where you want the power (torque) in an 26s rev range and live with that compromise . Because these are a reproductive receptacle of a car to work on you only want to do this once . If your glutton enough to have done it three times with new sets you should have either stroked it (the engine) or thrown a basic RB30 at it .

I would never ever own one of these cars if I couldn't finance an RB30 and a pair of new 2530s (which are GT2860R 63Ts in actual fact) . Nice to drive around town and just about keep up with the traffic without reving the piss bags out of it . If you really like the sound of revs buy an X Box and a cap and wear it backwards - MUCH cheaper .

33GTR dumps wont be an issue.

I was making 340rwkw on -9s with ~22psi using R33 dumps.

This is good to hear.

If aiming for 400kw with -5s, I would assume that hks or xforce sized dumps would support this power level? It did on my rb2630 with -10s so I think I just answered my own question.

What do these tomei items look like and are they plumb back waste gate?

Upgraded to Tomei dumps when putting on -5s... The only comparative difference was exhaust note.

Cars with stock dumps and -5s made the same power/response as my Tomei equipped set-up.

going to bump this thread... awesome read.. did the guy actually buy a set of turbos or what? seems like alot of posting with no actual purchase? lol

just purchased a set of -9s for my rb30dett 350z, its got a set of 259 9.15 cams in it, nitto drag gasket and cp pistons with 8.5 compression

hoping to have a very responsive street car and will try and get 350kw out of it!

I had a set of hks 2510s but they started leaking oil, so the -9s should be in soon, how do we think the 9s will go on a 3 litre ? keeping in mind i really loved the 2510's... hope the -9s will do better.

How much difference are there in wheel/housing/trims between the 2510's and -9's? I can't imagine there would be much?

The 2510's didn't "nose over" quite noticbly up high?

the 2510's did not nose over up top at all, but it had a 7000rpm rev limit being a rb30, the 2510s are similar to the gt2560r SR20 turbo.

Those numbers are definitely too big to be -9s. They are GT2859Rs, so 59 exducer (and around 44mm in) from memory. I would expect those numbers to be more like what you would see on a -5

Gilt your specs are for a different type of -9 and as Lith said the 707160-9/GTSS is a GT2859R .

Confusion exists over the GT25/GT28 descriptions . Back when Garrett and HKS spec Garrett BB turbos were new GT25 and GT28 turbine based units were all called GT25XX . This is why HKS spec GT2530s were not called GT2830s even though in todays terms they use GT28 turbines .

Now to the as called GT2510s and GT2530s . They are basically the same turbo but the 2510 uses a smaller OD and trim TB25 turbine - 53mm 62T vs 53.8mm 76T .

From what I can gather 707160-9/GTSSs use a 62T version of the 53.8mm 76T turbine as does the Garrett marketed version . These -9s also from memory use OE GTR sized housings both sides where the HKS spec 2510 and 2530s use larger ones .
