I have attended two.

mercotts defencive driving- was a 18th bday present and was quite happy with that one. the speeds all the practical were done at were 40-60km/h

did the 2nd one when i got my own car (6 months after turning 18) with AAMI insurance as it was free.

didn't like it as the speeds were much lower 30-40km/h and didn't realy show what could happen.

i've driven a rb20det before i even had my L's

its got to do with the driver not the car, as a number of low power cars end up in stupid accidents ( stepping on gas instead of the brake etc)

i got impounded in a 30kw corolla, its got nothing to do with power unless it 300+ kw

this is true, its the same with bikes. how hard you plant the foot, turn the wrist etc. but some people are naturaly good, others are completely gumby and need practice. even a gumby person in the dry would probably be allright with an rb20 in the dry but in the wet? what about fugged tyres?

unfortunaetly the rules have to pander to the lowest common denominator

hah ha my mate got done in his grandmas pulsar overtaking 5 cars in a 90 zone doing 153kmph by a chopper. car impouned, licence lost for a week for every k he was going! and 1000's woth in fines. he needed to be off the road though, ive seen him with a cheeseburger and phone in one hand, coke and a smoke in the other, steering around a roundabout with his knees...

if you read the other post with keven krudd, he wonts to incresse the drinking age to 21.

I was in the USA last year for and altho i could drink alot of my mates were under 21 and couldn't however this did not stop them from attaning booz.

Yes, great you have a rear wheel drive car and you can go side ways and the point is???????

Just take a trip down the road and the amount of elevens's on the road is un real listen carefully and you can hear the chav in distance most nights too

To combat this the insurance companies could always charge the young or new drivers a stupid amount to insure anything over a 1.5lt car or truck like they do in England

we are talking $5k $6k a year to insure a 206 gti or Astra cope in the first year yeap thats how much it costs. You wanna pay less get a more insurance friendly car or wait till your older with more experience

This would be something for the RTA/Vicroads to look at with registration fees - can't see insurance companies banding together in the name of safety and knocking back clientele with exorbitant premiums...they already do something similar (although much cheaper than what you suggest) with age and vehicle specific excesses.

did anyone see that article by mark skaife on the sunday night program? he travelled over seas to germany, studied theyre roads system, theyre driver education system and new cars... he found that chiefly, what was lacking in australia is education of young drivers, followed by the roads they drive on and the cars they drive.

interesting points where:

in germany your parents arent alowed to teach you! you have to have professional lessons! this way your parents bad habitts arent being passed on

all young drivers must be able to pass an advanced driver training course before attaining a licence

government grants to buy new cars are helping put young people in newer cars

driver awareness and road law adherance in germany is orders of magnitude greater than here

and it was cool to see the vs calais pulled up a full ten metres later than the VE bommodore wagon

Just let the Mofo's do their burnouts out in the industrial estates at 2am in the middle of no where, let the cops turn a blind eye as opposed to getting them to move along, often ending up on residential streets.

so why are we wasting time, money and resources on them rather than the 87% of the road users that cause 75% of total crashes?

surely you'd target the majority rather than the minority as that would result in a larger reduction in incidents, assuming the same resources are allocated to the majority and a similar effectiveness in reduction, it would mean that proportionally speaking we'd have less accidents on the road.

and what did i do?

- 3 points + $243 fine for no seat belt
