Hi All

My lower ball joints on the front of my car have had a small tear in them for a while and when doing a 5,000k service on sat it reminded me i probably should replace the suckers.... Anyone have any insight on what ball joints these use?

Any one have any tips for R & R of them?

Car in question is '97 RS4V.

Cheers,

Chris

If your talking about the ball joints on the front lower control arms I'm in the process of replacing everything underneath mine and I'm doing these as well as all mine are split, leaking grease and are pretty loose now anyway. Nissan won't do much but offer you a full replacement arm with the inner and outer ball joints on them (stuff that), but I found this UK Ebay site that sells both front inner and outer ball joints for the front LCA and the rear ball joints on the rear LCA.

http://stores.ebay.co.uk/conceptua-tuning_...4634Q2ec0Q2em14

Prices aren't too bad I guess but I'm yet to find someone here locally that will supply all these ball joints for C34 Stageas. But if anyone does know please let me know. Because its going to work out roughly $630AUD before shipping for all front and rear (6 in total).

And yes I also feel your anger for c.v's  Which is why I'm ripping front and rear shafts out and rebuilding them with new joints, boots etc so I won't have to fu*k around with them anymore hopefully.

Also (if you are talking about the ones I'm talking about) they are a pain in the arse to get off too. I just took the arms off, put them in a vice and used a fork style ball joint remover (yes I know they stuff the rubber boots) but they were shagged anyway so I didn't care. It was pretty easy. You could also use a 3 jaw puller or a single jaw ball joint remover. But they are in there tight. Give the arms a hit with a hammer around the joint too to break it loose.

Or if you were talking about the tie rod end ball joints (people all refer to ball joints in different ways) then here is another Ebay link, an aussie one

http://cgi.ebay.com.au/2-OUTER-TIE-ROD-END...=item27b1ce7811

And at that price with free shipping thats pretty good. Mind you Nissan isn't too bad either, I got mine (R34 GTR ones, part# is on here somewhere) for about $65 anyway.

Yeah thats the outer lower control arm ball joint (2 bolt one, the inner is a 4 bolt). The link I had in my first post has these for sale. But like I said they're coming out of the UK. If you do find something thats the same locally let us know. Even in Fast they just list the whole control arm not the seperate ball joints. Mine aren't that badly split but getting there. Very loose ball joint though so they're stuffed anyway. I haven't found them anywhere else yet.

Okay so to make it easier for people needing these in the future

Part numbers for the front were

40160P (Lower Outer) 2 Bolt

40160N (Lower Inner) 4 Bolt

Same as GTR Front

Nissan Wanted $160 and $110, or $135 and $90 trade.

Repco and Bursons don't do it

Cheapest I found was through RHD Japan for the Outers for $70ea and approx $30 to $40 for postage. Big saving if you can wait.

There are several different sizes of ball joints that fit R33/R34 GT and GTR. I got mine from second hand but it took three different attempts to get the right one. I would suggest you take a sample with you if you want joints.

If you just want boots they can be got from SuperCheap etc. There is a kit that virtually fits all.

    • The MX5 has had some annoying rattles in both front doors over bumps So I installed fancy pants door bushings, which stopped all of the rattles with the windows up, but........with the windows down there was still rattles, so after some googling,  and a chat with MX5 Mania, I got some new door to glass weather seals, all the rattles, windows up, or down, are gone now Shout out to MX5 Mania, the weather seals were on sale, and when I head to Dural to pick the up they even fitted them for me for free I did see a "really" nice Blue NA sitting out front   and this Black NC PRHT that looked like it has sat in the sun for its whole life and never had a wash, the clear coat was non-existent, an it looked horrible, really horrible, but, it had a nice turbo kit with over 200kw, the thing went like a cut snake, bagging the rears through the gears and dosing like a champ 😍 But, as I've always stated, I am keeping my NC na, I'm happy with the current power the car makes In other news: MX5 Mania do a drive in drive out turbo kit, the only minor additional part recommended for boosting my car, as it sits now, is a oil cooler, and that bonnet vents are definitely required for track use Aftermarket version look a bit to "racecar" spec I wonder how Focus RS bonnet vents would look?????
