Hi guys,

Im looking at turbo'ing my car. At the moment i have limited money and i've sussed out all of the options available.

Firstly i don't want to buy a turbo 33 because ive spent so much time and money on my car at the moment. I would just rather turbo mine.

I have looked at the option of buying an engine but costs are holding me back!

Do you reckon i could efficiently turbo my car for a fraction of the price of a turbo engine?

At the moment i'm prepared to turbo it and take it easy in order to wait it out until i get the parts!

What are the essential items in which i need to turbo it instead of the stupid extras which are just power additions to the conversion?

What do you guys think?

cheers

just one think to keep in mind mate.....small things add up pretty quickly.....personally i would just wack a RB25DET motor in there....would be the best thing to do and see if you can sell you NA motor....might have to wait a bit longer but then you wont have the head ache of little things letting go on you...

No. Close thread. Dude unless you own a workshop or can do EVERYTHING yourself, and plan to steal all the necessary parts, then no. Sell it and buy a turbo.

It's not that it's overly complex, it's just that it's far from "a cheap way".

There is heaps about doing this in the Naturally Aspirated Performance forum section.

I had an R34 NA with a plan of making it turbs, after quotes and research, the costs and risk associated with it were not worth it. (just have a read in the NA section)

If you were going to do it, then swapping the entire engine is the best bet, you will probably need Regency approval on it id imagine.

It will probably work out the same, if not cheaper to sell your car and buy a turbo one straight out.

Not what you want to hear, and not what I wanted to hear when I wanted to do it.

Good luck.

it will start off as a very expensive thing to do and the costs will just pile up from there on mate.....do what penny did.....sell the skyline and get a WRX :).......from where i look at this is....your options are:

1 - sell yours and get a 33 GTST

2 - swap the motor, do the brakes and go via regency

3 - turbo your motor (very very expensive)

personally i would go with either 1 or 2 :)

WIN!! Hahaha

It was hard to let go of those sexy curves and hot plate lights.... but the power and handeling of the rex is more then compensation.

Dom, from what most are saying in here, it's not only a $$ thing that you have to factor in your decision but also the heartache involved in the whole process (ie. brake upgrade etc).

Unless you have time on your hands and the drive to do it, the easiest option is to start again.

After just having finished the final bits of a 25DET transplant in my cousins 33; listen to Pete and everybody else here, take the easy option Dom... sell and buy a gtst.

I know you don't want to get rid of your car because you've put time and effort into it, but it will be worth it in the end. You'll end up spending more on all the parts needed, labour (if you're not going to do it yourself), etc than what you will if you sold your car and paid a few $k in difference for a gtst.

    • It only looks tidy, as most of the stuff that was on the whole back wall, is now in the trailer to go to the tip, or has been shoved in my 2.2x2.4m "Spare parts room", and now I can't get to anything in there Ha ha ha I could definitely do with a bit more space, but I'd just end up with your problems I'm going to enclose the car port beside the garage, and move a lot of stuff into it I think. OR... It will be setup as a fabrication area, and the main garage will have parts storage in it. I'm not sure yet... Need some pictures of that big shed you've got with the bikes and Skyline in
    • No. I think it's gone. 😭 I think you can get body coloured ones on eBay so I think I'll get one of those... Or just hang a red ribbon from the hole and whack a TOW sticker next to it.
    • Can't say I've had a bad experience with one on my car, then again it only gets washed once or twice a year... The wheels on the other hand, get a good spray often due to my shitty dusty pads.
    • @MBS206 thats pretty neat and tidy to me!  I'll get a photo of mine when I'm out there next. It might require multiple photos to understand the scale of the atrocities though... In total I have 4 sheds of varying sizes and layouts. Main shed is 14x8, second shed is 3x8, third shed is 11x2.5, fourth shed is around 6x4.  All are pretty much full.   The main goal of my cleaning tsunami is to make the main shed predominantly car and motorbikes only. Second shed is my metal fab room (2 x bench grinders, drill press, bench belt sander, metal band saw, scrap metal storage and some of my garden tools.  3rd shed is more bigger garden stuff, storage for engine crane, jack stands, concrete grinder, concrete mixer, air compressor lives there, and it now has two 2mx2m pallet racking shelves with itemised boxes holding building stuff, electrical stuff, plumbing stuff, etc, etc.  The 4th shed is Ryobi electric ride on mower, mini boom sprayer, ancient Kubota tractor, more garden stuff!  I have got a lot of shit....  Then there's the pool house (8mx4m) and the pool pump shed (4mx4m).  I built all of the sheds over the 11 years we've been here.  The main shed was a Ranbuild kit, the rest are all custom made to fit the areas available. Building the main shed taught me a LOT as I had no idea about building anything prior to that!  I've still got one more in me. It will be my man cave which I poured the extra concrete for way back when I poured the concrete for the main shed. The idea is the Skyline will be a centre piece of the main cave once (if...) it's finished.  I told my now 14 year old son yesterday that I will 100% drive him to his year 10 formal in 2 years. Still a long way off but at least I now have a date to work towards! 🤣
