I dont think cheap is the way to go as from experience you end up spending more on repairs to keep it on the road. Your better off spending 8k mark the money you spend now you will save if you had got a older car + your driving a newer car around you get me?

As above mitsubish magna 6 there cheap and tough as nails, just stay away from a Bombodore or a Fraud.

If you go a magna go for the TJ2 models, 2002 onwards. They're a good improvement over the TJ model.

Auto magnas have a weak point in the gearbox that will go if the car hasn't been serviced regularly/has done large amounts of towing without a trans cooler/or if you're unlucky etc... The 3.5 v6 magnas are not bad to drive, plenty of torque to pull you along, but like most cars do have their issues.

Also worth considering is a similar year camry. I have a 2000 3.0L camry and a 2000 3.5L magna, the magna is more fun to drive, but the camry feels much more solid even though it has over 50k km more on the clock.

Maxima and accord are also worth a look at.
