Some advice since i was in the same position as you.

Take your time and keep negotiating with their insurance company, have reasonable figure in mind and keep persisting with them.

NRMA will make you an offer and send you a cheque, if your not happy with it do not bank the cheque thinking they will pay you more on top.

My 32 was a write off and I wanted to keep the car. They Offered me $4.5k with another $5k if I gave them the car.

Long story short 6 weeks later + alot of argueing i got $9.5k and kept the car.

Goodluck

Just to add you dont have to wait for his insurance to contact you, you can call them up yourself and start the claim.

thanks, all the info helps.

haven't gotten a smash repair quote yet, but here's a pic of the rear end damage (right rear quarter panel is warped too). anyone care to guess if this will be written off?

I actually work in claims mate, as a third party you are not obligated to have your vehicle written off.

The third parties insurance company are liable for all your expenses at your discretion, meaning you can have them make a pre accident value and pay you out on that if they dont think its repairable. But they do not take the car off you or cancel your rego, only the company that takes your vehicle on as a risk can do that.

All you need to do is call up the NRMA and let them know you are the TP1.

Your car will most likely be 95% chance that your car is a total loss.

Advise them you are going to have the veh quoted for assessment and just have a quote emailed or even to call them up and let them know the total amount.

The value of the veh is determind through various websites.. some use glasses, car sales to compare the same model and conditions.

pre accident value

minus - salvage value

Good luck to you.. I know how much of a pain NRMA are from exp.

When I was on my P's I was run up the back in MCdonalds Drive-thru. The bloke wouldn't pay, letters of demand etc. I ended up claiming on my Third party property insurance they fixed my car then chased him up for the excess that I would pay for a claim. Have you tried that? It was a long time ago, I'm sure thats how I did it though.

Cheers and good luck.

Most insurance companies will only do that if you can prove that the TP is uninsured.

That's why it's recommended to have full comprehensive. That's the service that you pay for.
