As I noticed a couple of new/sneaky road safety cameras put up recently I thought it would be handy to let everyone know about cameras around Melbourne.

Feel free to post up any fixed, portable cameras you see around the place so that others can be aware. Posts can be handy for anyone who checks the forum before they head somewhere. Also, post incidents if they are making a big difference to traffic (eg Western Ring Road). This might be able to help us avoid painful driving experiences.

PLEASE NOTE: This is not a thread for slagging out cops or cameras, purely informative of their where abouts. Please keep on topic with the following format.

SUBURB: Street/Intersection, direction, time (if car mounted or incident), any details/notes. Map if you can be stuffed

A couple that I have become aware of recently:

DONCASTER: Williamsons Road, intersection of Doncaster Road heading south. Speed and red light camera for straight and RH turn (put up recently) Map Linky

ST KILDA: Fitzroy Street, intersection of Lakeside Drive. 40 km/h zone which got a whole bunch of people I know by surprise. Map Linky

New speed and red light cameras

Fixed speed camera and redlight camera heading south cnr doncaster rd and vicoria st doncaster

mobile speed camera corner wyena way and king st doncaster

This is like a SAU trapstar lol.

Anyway, possible mobile cameras:

Mentone: Approx 85 Lower Dandenong Road just after KFC heading towards Dingley.

Braeside: Approx 340 Lower Dandenong Road, city bound. (Cops hiding behind bush)

Dingley: Lower Dandenong Road (between Heathland Way & McArdle St) outside of the primary school.

Also, I have an idea, what if a mod/admin keep editing the first post and keep adding cameras when reported? So we can have like a LONG list of cameras?

No point reinventing the wheel:

Help keep this database up to date. If you see one that isnt on there, send them an email. I have suggested 3 that have been put up there. Much handier having a map too.

That site is cool, but it only has fixed cameras..... It doesn't have mobile cameras or "road incidents".

Found another one with more info: http://www.trapster.com/

That's what I meant by "SAU Trapstar" lol. I think most of us that owns an iPhone has that app

MONASH FWY. Just after warragul road exit - outbound. Was stand still traffic an hour ago (12.30), got out of it by doing a u-turn inbetween the fwy O_O. Was the worst. Some sort of incident up ahead. So if you're heading home tonight after the city you are probably not going to read this, but jump off at Warragul road and take a different route.

Oh, also MELBOURNE, Spencer street tonight... they now block off one edge of the city for football?? It took me an hour to get from Melbourne Central to South Melbourne.. So I would pretty much avoid driving there any time there is footy.

i had it on my N95 as well, now have it on the iphone but dont use it much.

Yeah, after having Trapstar on my iPhone for like a month, with push notifications, I ended up turning it off, coz it was sucking up too much of my battery.

I mean the app is good and useful and all, but I'd rather having more batterylife then having fake Trapstar reports coming through every 5mins lol.

Please keep on topic

ps, I checked out some of those sites and noticed there are a few cameras missing... so this might still be handy.

  • 2 weeks later...

On Princess Hwy Dandenong Road heading outbound there is a speed/redlight camera at Clayton Rd... but I have also noticed just back from the intersection there is another camera aimed at the flashing '40' sign.

I'm assuming, and can anybody clarify, does that mean during school times the camera speed is set to catch people over 40 limit, when usually its and 80 zone? I've never left work early enough to be driving through there at school times, but this is my guess!?!?

Dandenong South, Pound Rd and South Gippsland Hwy - They are removing the round about there over the next week or so and putting in an intersection. So far traffic flow has been pretty reasonable going inbound for me on the way home from work.

Yeah I've noticed that one on williamsons rd too sneaky buggers, there was also a 40zone for like 100 meters on the way towards that speed camera outside shopping down on williamsoms rd but that has now been removed.

There is a new 40zone on doncaster road as you go past shoppingtown going outbound.

there also expanding the road towards cranbourne to 3 lanes and adding lanes to the ponud road bridge over the freeway, has taken them more than a month to get where thay are now so expect it to continue for a lot longer than a week.

popular spots for roadside camera to sit:

- opposite the burwood hwy end of cathies lane in knox. usually is a rav 4 that sites there.

- stud road, scoresby. usually a station wagon parked on the grass down from the bus stop about 100m or so from the george street lights.

- next to the audi dealership on burwood hwy, burwood. copper usually sits in the driveway next door with the radar.

- bayswater road, heading towards cantebury road. just after passing over boronia road, roadside camera usually on the right hand nature strip.

- warragul road, oakleigh. heading towards princes hwy. just after passing over the station a roadside camera sometimes parks behind a tree.

    • Have you put an aftermarket oil pressure gauge on and verified your oil pressure? Noise being on the block, on exhaust side, how high up the block does it seem to be? It could be the VCT system getting cranky, especially if it's mainly at idle, and when warm, as that'll be your lowest point for oil pressure. Could be showing that oil passages / VCT solenoid are blocking.
    • Well, hydraulic lifters will get noisy if they are dirty/fouled in some way, and exactly how that manifests will depend on exactly what schmutz is where. There is a procedure on here somewhere for dismantling and soaking/cleaning them. Replacing them with new is about 50% of the work and about 5% of the money!
    • Thanks for the reply @GTSBoy this is is a hydraulic lifter engine. Yea right i did not realise the lifters were supposed to be compressible while installed. I could push them down but i had to lean almost my while body weight on them. I have never heard of a lifter/ lifters ticking only at hot idle and getting worse the hotter it gets. I have owned a few jdm cars with noisy lifters. This noise is slightly more subtle, it is more of a sharp gentle metalic tic than the solid and more loud tapping I've heard on lifters. I have used a metal rod, alloy tube, hose and stethoscope and could not find the source of the tick. But it appears to be loudest on the actual engine block behind the exhaust cam gear and next to the oil filter. I had mate (40 year old mechanic) go over it with me and he couldn't find it either.. Could it be a cam seal issue of some sort? Cheers
    • This seems problematic and unlikely at the same time. Vanilla RB2Xs have hydraulic lifters. They do have "zero" clearance, but only when running with oil pressure inside them. When not running, you should be able to compress them and obtain heaps of clearance. RB26s and Neos have solid lifters. They should have ~0.3mm and ~0.5mm on the inlet and exhaust respectively. If they have zero clearance then bad things are happening. With nothing else being wrong, it would mean that the valves would be held slightly (ever so slightly) open when they are supposed to be closed and it should have all sorts of problems when running, caused by leakage in/out through the valves. Or, zero clearance can indicate severe valve seat recession. None of it is good. Have you used a piece of hose as a stethoscope to try to localise the noise?
