Hey guys I've just got my car tuned its a R33 with the following mods:

RB25 det

HKS 2835 Pro S turbo

Yellow Jacket coil packs

Z32

FMIC

3" TBE

Walbro Fuel Pump

Power FC + boost controll kit

Nismo 740 cc injectors

it was tuned on 16 psi and obtained 300 hp i had a HKS 2530 before for 16 psi and it was making 300 hp? on same dyno....they tuner told me that he couldn't put more timing into it because it just pings so im just wondering what could cause this?

Cheers

Would have thought you would be making more like 260 - 270kw with that setup. Without knowing your tuner or his workshop I would blame him first. He should be able to tell you why he can't get more power i.e. what needs to be done to fix the problem. i do remember a thread by Guilt Toy where he said that the Pfc gives false knock readings but I thought that was at a higher level. Was your car tuned by the local workshop or is the tuner well known and recommended? there is a huge difference between a mechanic who knows how to use a PFC and a top tuner.

It should make more than 300hp on 16psi, I can't think of much other than the tuner being a major point to look at for fault if he couldn't suggest any reason for why he couldn't put timing in - unless it was false knock.

What fuel are you using?

mmm how about cam timing? and TDC would those two things affect the powers? say if the crank wasn't at TDC ? cause i remember when i bought the engine the old owner of it said he changed the timing belt?

the tuner said there was no point running more boost because you can't run more timing.....

im running 98 ron

Cheers

Where are you getting it tuned?

If it's at Hyperdrive, keep in mind Andrew's dyno is pretty pessimistic.

James' (Ten Four) 32 GTR made 370 hp on Hyperdrive's, then 400 on x-speed's.

Similar to me, my x-trail made 225 at Hyperdrive, then 259 at X-speed!

Your not making much power cos that turbo isn't really in its efficiency range at 16psi on a 2.5L.

What does your turbo's intake look like? try to fish some cold air from somewhere, then he should be able to add more timing!

How many kms does the 25 have on it?

[edit] cam timing should be ok, if you're making 300hp, then it's obviously not out that much!

Yes it is way too low. 300hp from a HKS 2835 Pro S and wont take any more boost than 16psi. Something is definitely wrong.

I am guessing its not a fuel issue because your tuner would surely have mentioned if that was it. Now just need to try and rule out different issues one by one. Sounds like something to do with spark, whether it be coil packs, leads or plugs. Maybe heat i suppose.

its not the dyno, as the results i'm comparing are from the same dyno.

Nothing wrong with the turbo intake, i am running the full FULL HKS 2835 pro s kit which had made 320rwhp @ 16psi on a very tied rb25 (150,000km+) before i bought it.

XRATED: it has nothing to do with a dyno sheet the fact of the matter the car should be able to run more boost but i can't because i can't run enough timing.

What i think is wrong is that the cam gears are not setup correctly. I think it may be a tooth out or something.

When i get the chance im going to rip off the cam covers and set the crack to TDC and make sure the cams are line up correctly

define "pings"

does he mean the engine check light comes on?

or

does he mean the engine is detonating - audible by knock headphones?

also

when he said he cant get anymore did he just leave it at?

why leave it for you to play "debug the problem" he is the mechanic, not you

it makes no sense. surely basics check would prevail here

air

fuel

spark

make power, so check those. is the timing even correct (you mention you think the cam is off) - was this checked before anything (ie before even base tune)

What I've found that low power out put generally associated to the manner of how car owners wanted to modify their cars we well as the government regulations that every one have to obey.

Performance of a turbo mainly consist of: Flow capacity.

The more cool air you can get in, and more hot air to get out the better the performance.

I think you've got a exhaust related restriction as hot air can not be dispatched fast enough so it stays in your combustion chamber causing detonations. (cat restriction?)

Install a 3inch metal intake pipe with a good pod filter and a 3inch turbo back exhaust with no cat. Assume your engine condition is good enough with a reasonable tune and good fuel you will get the expected power level.

a 3inch turbo back exhaust with no cat.

On a skyline? That is already cop bait? And risk a massive fine?

Not sure that's very good advice mate...

A decent metal highflow cat can provide almost no restriction, the good quality ones are very good these days.

Plus they double as a muffler/resonator, negating the need for an extra muffler.

Just a thought but if you have a dyno graph then the more experienced guys will be able to comment more on what that is saying. Does the power delivery feel any different to before? The same peak power doesn't mean the low-midrange is the same as before.

As mentioned if you can't make more boost then look at flow/restriction issues. Do you still have the rubber intake pipe from AFM to Turbo? Have vacuum leaks been checked for, eg. hose clamps, split pipes, BOV etc? If you are making similar power then and now and all you changed was the turbo maybe something has been wrong or at it's limit since before and you're only now finding out as you can ask more of it.

Good Luck with it

Paulr33: The ping that the tuner was experiencing was detonation, the tuner couldn't give me a exact solution to the problem he just suggested a heap of stuff that could cause the low power levels...but i suspected it was the cam timing Ill get that checkd out once i finish my exams.

Hypergear: I've got the metal intake from HKS thats included into the 2835 Pro S, attatched to that is a Apexi pod filter, and the exhaust is a 3inch turbo back with no mufflers or cat....

FryR33: the dyno sheet is quiet consistent with no dips in the power....the car pulls hard delivery of power is about the same.

Cheers

Very unlikely your cam belt has jumped a tooth while your turbo was being swapped and you would know all about it. If you haven't got a decent tuner in Perth ( have you asked around?) plan your next holiday in a city where there is one.
