Eli, does this event have a CAMS permit yet? I don't think CAMS would be happy with a combined drift/grip day. Have you got organised fire and ambos too, as well as the required CAMS licensed officials to be present?

If you've hired the track for the day, I'd like to know (as I'm sure others would also) these services were available if I were to attend such an event.

Guys I'm really really sorry, got the call from Jo on Friday and haven't had time to get to a computer, it's been postponed as they just ran out of time and didn't have the people-power.

I'm a little disappointed, but on the other hand it does give us all more time to get the cars ready. I know some guys had actually booked accommodation up there and had been pulling all-nighters to get their cars ready, they're not happy at all, but lots of other are actually relieved at the extra time.

So yes, VERY sorry everyone, tomorrow is OFF, will keep you all posted.. But it's completely out of my hands at the moment.

Oh and the former plan for the day was - no fire crew, but everyone will have their own fire extinguishers, and ambo's wouldn't be on site, but are literally about a minute down the road and "on call" for the event, ie notified and aware, and if possible, ready to go. This may deviate for future events but that was the plan.

As for CAMS and approving grip/drift, yeah I'm not quite sure how it did/will go down, but the initial plan was to only have one car on the track at once, thus eliminating any chance of an accident caused by a driver's technique, speed or mistakes. With solo runs, it wouldn't really matter if an Evo was four-wheel sliding at 150, and a 3K Corolla was just cruising around some cones at 50. But, worst-case scenario, we could divide it into sessions.

I have no idea how it will go down now, or when. I'm going to ask if we can wait until the venue, marshalls and CAMS are all completely ready, approved, accredited and ready to go, rather than have things left to do by other parties before the "deadline" of the event. Both TBMS and CAMS have been working real hard to make this happen, but sometimes things just don't go to plan. I'd rather all of the hard work's done before even announcing a date to avoid future issues like this.

Was tempted to head out to Lala tonight, but couldn't get a tow in time, plus there are a few tinkerings I'd like to do on the car first.

Sorry mate, I know you meant well, but I wasn't convinced this was arranged properly. Even a practice day/track day requires fire marshalls and an ambulance on standby (at the venue, not off the property) ... and liability issues (insurance) accounted for. Remember the saying that: motorsport is dangerous. Obtaining a CAMS permit shows you've got the services arranged and ready at the venue, and that CAMS officials are in attendance to provide support on the day (unless otherwise provided for my the venue. In this case, I don't think Tailem Bend does, but Mallala (Clem) can cover this, for a fee). Don't think I'm having a go at you ... I'm all for more track day opportunities, but not at any driver's safety.

Before you question my credibility, I've been a race official for the past 9 years (motorcycle and cars, local and interstate). I'm a licensed CAMS official (and competitor, holding a L2S licence) and I correspond with CAMS regularly. If you want any advice or contact details on who from CAMS is best to see to your needs, just shoot me a PM.

I wasn't organising any of that myself, I was just confirming entrants and trying to keep them happy around what I'm told is realistic. I did get a bit of a "yellow flag" that things might not be ready in time on Thursday, but I didn't want to throw doubt into the ring, as numbers were borderline and any sudden drop-outs could have killed the event.

I'm now encouraging organisers to take their time and make sure everything's ready to go before setting a date, so nothing gets rushed.

Good to hear. Keeping everyone happy, and keeping everyone safe are worlds apart. :angry:

I recommend you contact these guys and get the full details on what is required. Even when you think you have all bases covered, its best to get more info. I did before our track day earlier this year, and was glad I did, as there can be conflicting info.

Also, your planned sunday would have clashed with Round 3 of the Nissan Datsun Car Club SA motorkhana event held at the Monarto BigW location.

Other info to consider, if not already known:

A motorsport event will require between 2 and 8 officials depending on number of entrants etc. The Clerk of Course is the only official that needs to be licenced but he/she must have an Event Command licence. The permit fee for a single club event is $95 or $138 for a multiclub event. A club must be affiliated with CAMS to be issued with a permit. Tailem Bend can be hired for about $660 per day.

It also comes down to if the event is a speed or non-speed event. Check the CAMS website for more info ... or contact CAMS for better clarification.

    • From when I was looking at getting the 86 engineered for the turbo, the joint said to put in a few euro 5 or 6 cats, then tune the car on a nice clean E85 tune When I was looking at a turbo for the MX5, it was basically the same thing, a couple of cats and a nice clean tune Although, it will depend on the year of the Jeep IRT emmisions standards required, and what mods are done, especially if it has a newer engine installed that requires a higher Euro
    • Yeah - but it's not actually that easy. There are limits for HC, CO, NOx and particulates. Particulates shouldn't be a concern in any petrol engine unless trying to comply to the very latest Euro standard. But getting a tune right so that all the others stay within limits AT THE SAME TIME is not a trivial exercise. You couldn't possibly get it right by just guessing at the tuner's dyno, unless he had a 4 gas analyser up the pipe, which is not often the case these days. It used to be. Every decent shop that did "tune ups" (as opposed to tuning) would have a 4 gas analsyer. Perhaps there's still quite a few of them around these days. But most "tuners" are only watching O2 and power readings.
    • Slight segway but the most expensive part of the whole thing which I would have thought would only be required for an engine size/type swap, not a VIV test, is emissions testing.  That's when you get into the big bucks.  I can't remember the exact price now but I got quotes for the GT-R based on swapping to RB30 (not that anyone bothers doing it legally anymore...) and it was around $4500 just for that alone.  The guy that does them manipulates the tune on the vehicle to make sure it passes.  The cheaper option is to book into Kangan Batman Tafe (I think that's where it was) and hire their tester.  Allegedly you're not allowed in there with the car though so not in a position to tweak anything to make sure the vehicle passes.  I'm sure in this day and age of ultra tuneable ECU's you could get the tuner to program a special efficiency (clean) tune that emits the lowest amount of particulates possible that would pass the test.  It might only make 50kW's but as long as it passed who cares!
    • I'm sure he has left signs, or, he is looking down, laughing That's my cunning plan for when I leave, lots of half finished projects, with no rhyme or reason of where I was actually up to, just to keep everyone on their toes
    • Does that price include the rack time to straighten the frame and body and replacement of parts and paint, as well as the noise and emmisions testing  The last engineering certificate I had done, albeit about 15 years ago, was around $1000 for a few inspections and the certificate
