You'd be better off getting a proper FMIC. Unless of course you know someone who can re-pipe the second factory one for free and get a 2nd factory one cheaper. Where would u put it? On the other side of the front bar?

You'd probably have too much pressure drop between the two coolers, this is where a single FMIC would probably be better, more flow and better cooling than 2 x factory ones

paying for a fmic isnt a option at the moment.

how about this:

- have the 2 factory coolers in stock location, one in front of the other (would this fit?)

- make up a pipe that bolts onto the end of the stock pipe (from the turbo) that splits the air into 2.

- then, half the air enters one cooler, half enters the other cooler

- the coolers 'exit' pipes meet before going through the stock pipes to the intake manifold

would this setup minimise pressure drop as the amount of air is greatly reduced (even though the air pressure is still the same)?

It would minimise preassure drop, but it may also introce lag, as it may take a tad longer to preasurise the 2 coolers now, so that the preassure after the coolers, is equal to the preassure before the coolers.

Also 2 in parallel (especially in the stock location) will not cool very efficiently, as air passes through them for a very short time.

I'd say that the best type of cooler, is long, flows well, andtakes the least amount of time as possible to preassurise, so that you dont see any noticable lag.

When put like that, it seems that 2 factory coolers in parallel is one of the worst options...... (unlees you get them free, and all you want to do for the time being is reduce preassure drop accross one sh1tty factory cooler).

I almost went down this path myself, but then managed to snap a good decent sized cooler cheap.... So maybe just hang in there a while....

BTW, I dont think the pinging under boost has too much to do with your cooler, it is it related to the amount of boost youre running, and the affect that has on your A/F ratios, and ignition timing.....

A SAFC will sort that out nicely, and give you much more power at a lower boost...

As an example, I got heaps of pinging at 12psi *WITH* a FMIC.... -> 167rwkw

Installed SAFC, tuned, and lowered boost to 9psi, no pinging .......-> 200rwkw

Save your coin.

If you mount one in front of the other in parallel then the back cooler will be getting minimal/disturbed airflow from the other cooler, with air that has already been heated due to having already passed thru the front cooler.

Parallel = too much pressure drop, so unless you work for a place where you can get labour/welding/materials for free or at least dirt cheap...i say save the coin.

Maybe look into a cheap water spray for the ntercooler, or if you want to be a little more climical, water injection, water injection will go a long way to curing the detonation, but involves a lot of trial and error.

nononono. I'd be steering well clear of that.

You'd have to have the piping the same lenghts for both coolers otherwise the air is going to get to the manifold at different times... and possibly different pressues if the piping is a long different in length.

As everyone else has said, save your money.

While it may not be an option now.

Going two coolers aint an worthwhile option.

Maybe look into a supra Stock I/C or something?

I think they are a bit better than the Skyline ones

You might want to try to place both coolers as a front mount. Grind off the end tanks and get someone to weld the two coolers together to make one cooler. Make sure the fins meet when welding, then but an end tank on the sides and pipe it through and you have yourself a cheap fmic. I've seen it done before and I does work well, but you need some who is a good welder. Get them acid dipped and no one will know :wassup:

In the end, nothing beats a proper fmic.

In my opinion:

- don't go for 2 coolers with 1 in front of the other as you wont get enough airflow through the two - too thick!

- don't go for a std cooler front mounted - you actually get more airflow in the std cooler position as air can flow through it and out the back (through perforated plastic guard in wheel arch)

- why not go for something like a stock r34 gtt intercooler. will handle 12psi in my opinion and is cheap for around $150 (minus the $80 or so you get from selling yuors, so even cheaper!)

the stock r34 cooler is arond 45% bigger then the r33 std one, and this means it'll flows significantly better for the cost!

- you could also look at getting a supra cooler which is 100mm thick from memory and might fit in the std position, but may need a bit of stuffing around to make it fit and these are hard to find!

No way you will fit a supra cooler in the location of the stock one.

Just turn your boost down, and save for a decent cooler.

The stock coolers are crap, if you fit two, you will have twice the pressure drop, ie twice the crap.

IF you can find an R34GTT cooler, it would be worth changing, but not a huge improvement and a bit of rooting around to fit it. I think expecting any money at all for your stock intercooler is a bit optimistic, mine is on the dump. people will just about give them away (or in my case throw them away) as they are pretty much useless and have no real resale value (unless you find someone unfortuneate enough to put a hole in, or get a leak in the stock one)

You can get the front mount a Jap Spec Galant (look similar to EVO ICs) or the IC off the MA70 Supra with thr 7MGTE Turbo 3L Engines.

Both are a vast improvement over the sorry Nissan jobbies, can be fornt mounted, and using mild steel piping should be able to buy and have installed for around $600-700
