I have aq set of KUHMO v710 ecsta's to try on my GTR hopefully at pauls next time attack meet (finally). But for me it all came down to price the v710 $500.00 a tyre brand new against the cheapest semi in my required size being $630.00 so for me i thought it made sense to save $520 and go with a faster tyre. And as paul runs his sessions as 1 warm up 5 hot laps and 1 cool down i think it will give me enough time to get some heat in the tyres and by the 2nd - 3rd lap they should come on and allow me to hopefully get in a few quick laps. Will see how i go and post again once i have a result.

That was some damn cool time attack right there Mark. man you've come a long way in a short time.

You are already keeping pace with the porkas with limited time at the wheel and limited mods. It will be interesting to see where it goes from here. :D

In defence of the porkers Noel i would not exactly say Mark (Handbrake's) GTR exactly has limited mods. Murry Coot suspension, Willall coolers all round, Upgraded brake rotors, Willall Turbos, Cobb ECU, Upgraded intercoolers, full exhaust.

Definatly not to take anything away From Marks times as there a bloody impressive and i am only hopeing i can get close to his times.

But in my opinion that is far from limited mods for an R35 i would think that his car would actually be one of the most modified GTR's around. The fact the car is capable of running the same lap times as a GT3 or Cup Car is awsome as these are two of the best road (GT3) race (cup cars) cars around but lets still not all forget that they are still only an NA 6 cylinder all be it the best one money can buy. Power to Weight is just so Fcuking hard to beat.

And fair enough Daz, I didnt realise mark had gone to those lengths. Still a damn good showing from a newcomer tho.

yes far form stock, but we haven't tuned the engine to anywhere near capacity yet. should be up another 100HP. hopefully. Also no tunning of suspension yet.

the porsches are about 400kg lighter, so yes power to weight is the key there

cant wait to catch up in August Darren! still long for an old school R32 myself!

I always find it amusing how many of you post an opinion when you don't actually know what you are talking about.

Please post the last time you qualified/supersprinted on slicks and then you may have some credability on this subject.

Not sure if the above comment is aimed at me.

But Opinions are like arseholes everyone has one. And on a public forum everyone is intitled to post their opinion.

If only experts and people that had a wealth of experiance posted then the whole forum would be just about empty.

I did speak to a few people that have used the tyres i have mentioned and all have told me they have found time and have also informed me that they will also need 2-3 laps to come up to temp wich would give me 3-4 hot laps in wich to try and put down a time. I understand that the suspension will also need to be tuned to suit to get the best out of the tyres.

If the above comment was aimed at me all i can say is i never proffessed to know anything about tyres and can only try and report back with some results once i have actually been to the track and have some real world experiance with these tyres. Hopefully then there will be some actual times as a reference. As i said price was also a big factor in my chioce. If ity turns out that this was the wrong choice i guess time will tell.

Dunno who that is aimed at? Not many have actually posted an opinion. A few have merely stated what they are trying...

I'm looking forward to trialling some other tire options myself to make my own mind up. First stop porka cup tires for sure!

Frankly if I want proper advice I don't go to a forum. The most experienced motorsport people I know don't even hang around at forums. I just call or see them direct.

As far as general info, or bouncing ideas around, then the forums are fine. You soon get a feel for who has a clue, and who's just regurgitating what they read off the side of their cornflakes packet.

Not worth getting excited over though.

A lot of the advice I have received from people who are professional motorsport teams or workshops was only relevant to guys who don't want their car to be either street legal/drivable or who have bottomless pockets.

There are a few cunning and experienced occasional track goers who have a great deal of experience that can be very helpful to draw upon when looking for advice on how to achieve quicker times without resorting to parking the car on a trailer or breaking the bank.

Valid points. I guess I should have clarified that these relationships tend to take time to build. some suppliers are happy to help strangers, others won't want to know you till you've you've spent your first $100k with them. There are still some excellent people out there willing to help however they can (eg Murray Coote, Jim Berry) and you don't have to be a top team to earn their time either. In fact, when I get off the phone with Murray I feel guilty I haven't actually bought anything off him. Remembe, they don't have to be high profile to know what they're doing.

My machinist / fabricator has building race cars (from Bathurst to F1) since the late 60's. These days he works in the back of a shed on the gold Coast. He's a bit of a nutty professor, but comes up with lots of great ideas that are a bit left field. some of the ideas have worked, others have needed tweaking, but together we often iron out the bugs and come up with workable solutions. Occasionally I'll look at something he's designed for the rally car and worry about its strength for gravel applications (he's mainly tarmac) but nothing has broken through lack of strength yet.

like anything, if you expect instant results, you will most likely be disappointed unless you put in the hard yards yourself. If you expect to get all the answers to life just by posting a few questions on an internet forum - well then I believe you get what you deserve.

what rim size do you run? I have a few Porsche cup tyres I am testing on the 33, got of couple of sets of 240's and 310's.

I have only been out once with my new Michelin Slicks on my R33

& the difference was amazing. It totally transformed my car & I cant

wait to get out there again on them. My car is a bit overpowered so it

was awesome to be able to power down out of the corners without

going sideways every time. It will be interesting to see how long they last.

I went with soft compound as we usually only do 5-6 laps at a time.

I beleive I aimed it at page 1.

What I will say is this,,,Slicks are faster than semi's,,,Period. If you can't get your slicks up to temp after a warm up lap and one quicky then your on the wrong slick. If you don't beleive me have a look how fast Duncan and Marek are going in our championship.

Radical Australia's corporate days use Kummo semi's on the 1st timer cars,,,quess what you graduate too when you get better.

Obviously not every brand of slick is great,,,shit I've used Radicals Dunlop,,,standard customer Dunlop,,,Hooziers and am now on Goodyears and for the Radical the later is by far the best.

I will be talking to tyre suppliers, but sometimes they only tell you only what they want to sell the most, hence my post on here to see if anyone has been in a similar predicament.

I'm struggling to accept that semi's can be quicker than a slick for outright fastest lap.

As I'm already running in 4D (sports sedans) all of my competition are running slicks so I figured I may as well join them and try to gain some valuable seconds.

(I'm the only one running semi's in my class.)

After talking to some fellow competitors on Sunday at Wakefield, I'm pretty confident now that I will be able to get a decent set of slicks for around $1600.

perhaps you should just come out and say what you're trying to say. rather than backpedalling away from that and making vague insinuations about something said somewhere on the previous page. Then people might actually understand what you're on about? just an idea.

its little suprise to me that the R35s will be faster on Porsche Cup slicks - they have no other real tyre option!!! It certainly doesn't make slicks the best/fastest choice for every car at sprints.

btw, is that your radical runing 57s???
