Regulator in the alternator is stuffed. If you don't get it fixed / replaced, you will continue to kill batteries.

so is it a matter of replacing the whole alternator

or is it just a part of the alternator that needs replacing?

There are some spare parts regulators available. What is the part number of your alternator. I'll see what I have got.

if you don't fix it then you can end up damaging more than just batteries. the alternator in my grandparents car stuffed, was putting out 18 volts and blew the wiper motor (which wasn't on at the time but it just started to go full speed and wouldn't stop), blew the headlight bulbs, dash light bulbs and tail lights.

My alternator is doing the same thing. The turbotimer is telling me it's making 15 volts and the battery light is on. When it drops to below 14.5v the batt light turns off. Checked it with multimeter also. The workshop I took it to said it was overcharging but should be fine :D I really hate that battery light. Will get that regulator fixed one day when the hole in my wallet recovers.

Like was said, its your regulator.

Had this problem in the 32 GTR about 6mths ago.

Luckily noticed it early, and had no battery explosions.

Best to go get it fixed asap, cause as mentioned, it can affect more then just the battery.

The GTR didnt like 18v. It messed with the speakers, ABS, etc.... Thankfully no permanent damaged occurred.
