Hi All,

My car did a strange thing this morning, i had just left the house and was about 1km down the road at the intersection when as i accelarated it cut out twice but picked up again almost instantly as i took my foot off the accelarator. I wonder what could be the cause as it was fine for the rest of my journey.

Has anyone experienced this?

Cheers Richard

This sounds similar to a problem I had a year or so ago.

The Fault was the Cam sensor on the right bank. It was a recall item in Japan has also been a problem on local Pulsars that use the same cam sensor.

My car would literally stall at any speed and would have to restart the motor.

This ma not be the same as it sounds like you car is not stalling but it does sound like the computer is cutting the engine because it detects some sort of fault is shutting down ti protect the motor.

Good luck finding the error

Cheers Andy

Hi Andy,

Thanks for the heads up, so did you have to replace the sensor? If so can you remember any part numbers and what the cost was.Did you need to reset the computer or does it sort itself out once you start up?

Thanks again cheers, Richard

  • 4 weeks later...

Richard, did you find the problem. My car started doing the same thing two days ago. Under load, it would suddenly cut the ignition but then come good again. I can drive it forever on a light throttle and it doesn't happen, but accelerate or climb a hill and it gives these almighty coughs. It's too savage to be a fuel problem, and too savage even for just one HT lead or plug. It's a total (but momentary) ignition cut.

It may not be the same as your problem, but it sure sounds suspiciously like it.

Cheers, Jeff.

Hey Jeff,

sorry i haven't had the problem again, what you explaining sounds exactly the same good luckand if you don't mind keep me posted.

Thanks Richard

Well, the diagnosis is a dead (or at least very sick) Crank Angle Sensor. My Auto Sparky did a great job. It took someone with all the right diagnostic gear, which is defintely not me. It now behaves like it should - like one of the best motors in the world!

Cheers... Jeff.

Hi Jeff,

I'm glad you found the problem, was it a matter of giving it a clean or was it a bad connection with the plug or did the sensor just give up the GO? What was the damage to your pocket for the job?

Cheers Richard

The crank angle sensors fitted to the VQ35DE & VQ25DET were subject to a Nissan recall because of a high failure rate. There should be a round silver sticker on your car on the drivers upright and this indicates that the car was inspected by Nissan for the recall.

The same crank angle sensor was used in Nissan Pulsars imported to Australia of the same vintage and they had the same problem here also.

Just one of those small hassles of importing.. but so worth while when the motor is going well.

Richard / Andy

Sorry for the slow response. I must have a profile problem because I never get notified of postings.

The damage was $290, including $165 for the part.

Cheers... Jeff.

Hi Jeff,

That sounds like it was resonable price, thanks

Cheers Richard
