What To Look For When Buying A 2nd Hand Turbo?

Recommended Posts

hey guys i might be buying a second hand r34 highflow turbo, it was done by gcg and has the stamps but it was done 14months ago so no warranty, old mate said he lost his licence for 12 months and just got it back but wants it upgrade to something bigger. he reckons it hasnt even done 5000k's. so my question is what do i look out for when buying this?? i know i should check for shaft play but could i get a more in depth explaination of what to look for and how to go about this. cheers chris.

i have some a pic of the turbo also

Pics are pointless for conditon really.

Anyway side to side movement - a little, is ok. All turbos have some movement in that area.

Front to back (or in/out when looking @ compressor wheel) play = bad news, damaged bearings/cartridge = rebuild time.
