I have joined the yellow sticker club

Went through a booze bus in Williams Rd, Toorak - was asked to wait at the end of the queue by the blue XR6 TMU candy-car. I blew a big fat 0 on the breath-test BTW.

They did inspection (I was the only car to be stopped). Pods OK as they are caged and secure. Intercooler OK as it is standard. Blow-offs OK as they are standard. Ride-height, rim size, gauge mounting, exhaust noise... all OK.

EPA letter coming as I have an EBC. Thanks for that.

Better check my cat is working OK

But oh. What's this...

My new tyres (Sumitomos - less than 5,00km old) have a weight compliance index of 93. The ADR compliance for a GTR says they need to be 94. That and my steering wheel doesn't have a padded centre.

I went to Bob Jane this morning (who recommended, supplied and fitted the tyres) who were very apologetic - and hadn't EVER had this come up before. A look on their catalogue showed all 265/35/18 tyres are rated at 93. Even $750 a corner P-Zeros.

While we were looking, the officer who booked me popped in to check and see if he was correct in his findings? Seems that the 93 rating is very high - why the car required 94 he wasn't sure. Too late for me though - got my defect sticker.

Seems that the only way to get 94 or greater rated tyres is to change sizes, which then compromises the factory-stated rolling diameter, which could lead to rubbing on the guards at full-lock - DEFECT, or not complying to the vehicle standard (upsetting speedo readout etc) - DEFECT. Glad to see these laws have been well and truly thought out.

So... Bob Jane have admitted fault and are going to replace my tyres as soon as they find something suitable. Either way - my car has to be off the road after Friday arvo (they only gave me 3-days to fix). So I'm a bit annoyed.

Something to be aware of I guess...

Oh - and my Momo Millenium wheel never came with a centre-pad and is ADR compliant. I have a legal notice from Auto-Tek (Momo distrubutor) stating so. They also have NEVER had this come up before.

What a waste of time.

Out of interest - what weight rating do people have on their tyres? What does the sticker (drivers door-jamb) say is required. Am I just using an unlucky rim size?

Worth noting too - that I still recommend Bob Jane in Prahran. They've been very good about this. Even the cop was surprised - that's where they take their cars.

Yeah, its about time a few of these common things are thrown out, because most of the time they're not actually illegal - and therefore invalid defect which you *shouldn't* be paying.

When you get it all cleared Jamez, you should write a note to the police superintendant or something. Clearly you have *evidence* to suggest ADR items are being defected and that it neeeds to be passed down the chain of command that "padded steering wheel" and the good old "h pattern not displayed" are complete rubbish and NOBODY should be getting defected for these items.

Weight rating? ha, i barely know what it even is! and i don't think i *have* any stickers on my door jambs anymore, funny that..

FYI James mine are 65 - but they are 265/45/18 not 35's. No idea of what the requirement is.

Sounds like you got someone that had just finished reading the complete rule book on legal requirements and wanted to impress someone with his knowledge!

i drove past that boose station going the opposite direction going home after a yarra blvd run....

i crapped my dacks as all the cops followed my car with their eyes, one of em radioing something into his mic

just hope he wasnt taking my details down for an EPA letter :) i was going "suspciously" slow and whats worse is it was uphill

Cheers guys.

Snowman: Thanks for that. What brand are yours? Not sure if a 45 profile will be too tall though.

GTT-R: Mine are 650kg. Every other 265/35/18 is 650kg. So silly.

James: Was I there when you went past? Was about 9.00pm

I asked him about how to get the defect removed for the steering wheel - he said to show the Momo catalogue to VicRoads to show it never was padded, and I'll be fine. So why defect me on it in the first place? To prove what? Such a waste of time.

Worst thing is the sticker. So embarrasing having it on the car - especially for something I didn't really do. I bought new tyres - even had an alignment last week. I would have assumed they were OK...

Oh - and my Momo Millenium wheel never came with a centre-pad and is ADR compliant. I have a legal notice from Auto-Tek (Momo distrubutor) stating so.

They may be referring to the fact that yor car is supposed to have an airbag in the steering wheel.

EPA letter coming as I have an EBC. Thanks for that.

Hopefully it will just for the noise and not for the emissions.

FYI, a full factory exhaust doesn't pass the EPA niose test.
